Mubtaahij is a real sleeper. I love this horse, but he like a lot have some question marks.
1st of all his trainer Mike De Kock is world class. he isn't coming here unless he has a horse to compete. would not waste his time.
this horse is very talented. question marks though for sure. for one thing, there is a lot of talk at CD that he looks tired. the traveling could have taken a lot out of him as he has had quite the trip. was staying in Arlington Park to train on the synthetic surface there, which is his normal routine in Dubai. train on synthetic, race on dirt.
a lot of comparisons have been made to the Meydan surface and the CD surface, so he will likely get over the track well.
he doesn't train with shoes either, which is another plus.
the big worry I have for this guy is he isnt on his normal feed. his normal feed wasnt allowed into the states, so they had to change what they are giving him. dont really like to see a big change in routine like that, but it isnt a big enough reason for me to discount him completely.
he can absolutely get this distance. he isnt going to be a deep closer, will probably lay towards the middle of the pack, which means he has that much less traffic to navigate.
take a look at his UAE derby in the video above....watch when he gets in to the stretch and absolutely explodes home after he gets some room from behind the horses in front of him. very impressive acceleration, especially having that much left at the end of a long race. won easily and for fun.
a lot of talk about splits and times in this race and it being slow, but they time things differently than how we do it here. the clock starts as soon as the gate opens over there, so there is no run up. over here they dont start right away. the horses get running before the clock starts.
I would like to see some big odds on him, but a lot of people are keen on this one.
one other thing, Art Sherman, the trainer of California Chrome who was in Dubai for the Dubai World Cup, saw this guy win the UAE Derby and was very impressed. he is very high on him, and said he would have his betting dollars.
