Cardinals stuffed by Buccaneers
The Arizona Republic
Nov. 4, 2007 09:45 PM

TAMPA - The Cardinals
had two weeks to prepare for their game Sunday against Tampa Bay. Now they have to worry about how long it will take to get over it.:SIB

The Cardinals played with an off-week hangover, weighed down by an offense that showed little interest in getting out of bed and making something of itself. The Buccaneers dominated in most every phase for most every minute, winning 17-10 and handing the Cardinals (3-5) their third straight loss.

"There's just no excuse to play that way," quarterback Kurt Warner said. "I got no excuses, I got no explanations, but we weren't anywhere close to being good enough."

The loss caused embarrassment, anger, bewilderment and even memory loss for the Cardinals. All were as commonplace as empty Gatorade bottles in the cramped visitors locker room at Raymond James Stadium.

"Very disappointed," said coach Ken Whisenhunt, who was justifiably irritated, "especially coming off a bye week, that we didn't play better than that."

The Cardinals demons were as familiar to them as the birds on their helmets. The offense didn't capitalize on early chances. The defense held up for a while, then wore down. And the Cardinals stayed close enough to keep things interesting in the end, prompting Whisenhunt to note, for the third straight game, that his team didn't quit.:SIB

Much has been made in recent weeks of the Cardinals' need to start faster and avoid mistakes. They did neither on Sunday. The final stat sheet read like an autopsy report: The Cardinals had just nine first downs, including one in the first half. They ran only 42 plays, possessed the ball for just under 17 minutes, gained 23 yards rushing and completed fewer than a third of their passes.:scared

It's an offense in desperate need of a big play but incapable of getting one, at least early in the game. The Cardinals had some chances Sunday.

Warner hit receiver Larry Fitzgerald for a 47-yard pass on the second play of the game. But it might have gone for 80 yards and a touchdown had Fitzgerald not inexplicably stepped out of bounds at the Buccaneers 33. :nono:

No one forced him out, and Fitzgerald was well in bounds when he made the catch.

"I don't even know what happened," Fitzgerald said. "It's just a memory right now. I'm just disappointed we didn't pull that one off."

Asked again about the play, Fitzgerald repeated that he didn't remember. "Man, it's hard for me to place anything."

Three plays later, Warner hit receiver Jerheme Urban with a pass that would have given the Cardinals a first and goal. But Urban was hit and didn't make the catch, and the Cardinals settled for a 47-yard field goal from Neil Rackers.

The Cardinals had two other dropped passes in the first half.

"I felt like we were ready to play, right up to the point where, obviously, we dropped the football," Whisenhunt said. "It just seemed to go from there.":SIB

Arizona could do nothing with their last two possessions, including one that ended on Warner's second interception of the day. And so they enter the second half of the season with a losing record.

"We have to stop this bleeding right now," guard Reggie Wells said. "It's a matter of coming out, believe and knowing what we can do and not worrying about mistakes we made in the past."
...................................................................

Yeh stop the bleeding and here comes the
Detroit Lions with a 6-2 record and looking like a
legitimate contender to go into the playoffs.

Just give me my thousand dollars now books. We will just consider it a advance payout for a easy win.

10. Kitna's prophecy

" Detroit quarterback Jon Kitna predicted the Lions would win 10 games, and most people laughed at him after that offseason guarantee. So far, he hasn't given us too many reasons to think Detroit, now 6-2, won't surpass that expectation.

The Lions look even better these days because running back Kevin Jones is getting more involved in the offense -- he had 17 carries for 71 yards in the win over Denver -- and his presence gives Detroit a reliable running threat to complement its passing game. The Lions actually are dangerous."

Control of their destiny

No sense hiding from it. The Lions are going for it. And with two games remaining against first-place Green Bay, it's in their control.

"We're on a course to get into the playoffs no matter what," defensive tackle Cory Redding said. "This is real. This is real. This is real. What you see is what you get. We're not the same old Lions anymore."

The "Same Old Lions" never played defense like this, or at least never sustained it. This is three straight physical performances in which they've surrendered 16, seven and seven points. I'm not saying the Lions are ruthless, but when Denver scored its only touchdown with 2:31 left, Rod Marinelli threw the challenge flag, trying to preserve the shutout.

Rogers was terrific, easily the best player on the field, looking like a guy on his way to the Pro Bowl. He had two-and-a-half sacks in addition to his interception, leading a defense that was so relentless (five sacks and four turnovers), it practically ran up the score by itself.

First, Rogers knocked Jay Cutler out because of a leg injury on a sack. Later, Corey Smith obliterated backup Patrick Ramsey, who coughed the ball up to Dewayne White, who ran 3 yards for a touchdown. :scared

The Lions had another TD fumble return by linebacker Alex Lewis overturned on replay. And of course, there was Rogers' amazing romp, when he grabbed a Ramsey pass and stomped 66 yards for the touchdown that made it 37-0. :00hour

Rogers punctuated his score with a belly flop in the end zone, and players swarmed him. Tackle Shaun Cody cupped his hands like a bowl, and Rogers quickly got the joke, pretending to eat out of his teammate's palms.

"He was gobbling everything up, so I had to feed the big man," Cody said. "He's our motor. He and Redding are our heartbeat. That's what Rod believes in, a defensive line causing havoc and controlling the game."

Pouncing on turnovers

It's a philosophy the Lions are starting to feast upon. They lead the NFL with 24 takeaways, an astonishing total. Defensive coordinator Joe Barry is unleashing such a riled-up group, who knows, we might get to hear the old "Bar-ry!" chant at a Lions game again. :com:

OK, I'm officially getting carried away. But the Lions are playing as if every loose ball is dinner, and they are staaaaarving. Turnovers aren't something a team can count on every week, but the Lions are pouncing at every chance. Barry preaches that falling on a loose ball isn't good enough; grabbing it and running are required.

Rogers didn't want to talk after the game, and he has largely retreated from attention following a rocky offseason. But there's no denying he has bought into what Marinelli and Barry are asking.

"You guys (in the media) and the fans were the only ones that wanted big Shaun out of here," receiver Roy Williams said. "You can't trade him. He's the most dominant defensive player in the game. People say he only plays when he wants to, but that's not true. He gets double-teamed all the time. He wants to be known as the greatest defensive tackle of all time. He'll never let you guys know that, but I know that, and he knows that."

Even if he appears to be a few meals over 340, and even if he took attacks on his character personally, Rogers is fighting back admirably, as if he has something to prove.

"We take pride in scooping and scoring," Redding said. "You are what you do. We talk about taking over the game, and it starts up front on both sides. It starts with the big fellas."

The big fellas treat opposing quarterbacks these days like the last turkey leg on the Thanksgiving platter. They were so impressive, fans were filing out long before the end, appetites satisfied. And now, appetites are whetted.

When you're 6-2, the only acceptable and logical destination is the playoffs, and that's the direction the Lions are churning, led by the big fellas, led by the biggest fella of all.

You know in thinking about this play I believe the books are playing that same patsy watsy we have seen a few times this year already.

Lets see Detroit is playing great ball, but maybe the public will remember a few Arizona miracles at their home stadium.

If we set the line Detroit -7 where it should be we won't get many takers to start out with.

I got a idea. Lets open the line showing Arizona as the favorite to throw them off a bit. You know make them think that Arizona has a chance in
hell. :142smilie

I am glad that no one will be able to say that I am a big chalk eater this week.

Our friends from Kansas left yesterday
after the game. Looks like moneyline dog sandwich for lunch.

God, how can you not love this place.

I smell money and it smells green !

Warner, playing with a torn ligament in his left, non-throwing, elbow, was not in the locker room on Monday. After Sunday's game, he said he was embarrassed.

"There's no excuse to play that way," he said. "You've got to prepare better. We've got to be ready to play. We've got to show when the gun goes off on Sunday. I've got no excuse. I've got no explanation. We weren't close to being good enough."

With the negativity flowing throughout a franchise long accustomed to losing, Whisenhunt was trying to keep spirits up.

"We have to continue to do things that accentuate the positive," he said. "That's going to mean throwing some balls to Larry, getting the ball to Anquan, using some of our three- and four-receiver sets. But we have to get back to, especially early in games, getting the ball more in Edge's hands."

Whisenhunt said he was "frustrated for our fans, because I feel like we're a better football team than the way we played yesterday. I'm frustrated for our players, because they believe we are a good team."

Mediocrity is good enough to contend in the NFC West, though.

"If we play like we played yesterday, being a game out of first place doesn't matter," Whisenhunt said. "If we can clean up some things and play a little better, than we have a chance, especially with five of our eight games at home."

Next Sunday, the Cardinals are home against Detroit.

Kurt Warner, who preceded Mark Bulger in St. Louis, Eli Manning in New York, and now Matt Leinart in Arizona, is considering retiring at the end of the season. The guy can?t catch a break. Hard to believe there is not a lot of football left in his arm. Besides, as good as Matt Leinart has looked, he is still a rookie.:SIB

Actually, a lot of Kurt?s problems will become Matt?s problems. Namely, no offensive line. Ask Edgerrin James how fun it is to have Arizona?s line instead of the Colt line blocking for him.:scared

You know, Kurt had to be excited coming into the season, with? Edgerrin James giving them a legitimate running threat, Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin giving them receivers to throw to, and a new stadium packed with rabid fans.

Now five games in, they are 1 and 4, not blocking, last in the division, not scoring, not playing great D, and Kurt himself has not done well. Meanwhile, James is only averaging 3.1 yards per carry and Larry Fitzgerald is having the deadly hamstring problem.:scared

The topper, of course, is that Kurt once again finds himself in an organization that is looking at the next guy, Matt Leinart. After a while, it is more than a once great quarterback can take.
..............................................................

This guy is about 40 and still playing. Got to hand it to him. He has managed to play well over what a normal QB career would last.

Always like going against a QB that is considering retiring after year end. Its kinda like when Tyson fought that chump and lost as he was considering retirement.

Lets see, a chitty offensive line for Arizona, a take away ball hawking sack happy defense in Detroits team coming up this Sunday.

maybe the problem is your just stupid.:SIB

you been playing football all your life,
and you forgot where the sideline was

man you get paid to score touchdowns not step
out of bounds when no one is around you.

Adding the Dallas Cowboys -1 Vs New York Giants

When the Giants beat the Falcons I remember saying to myself , their secondary stinks. Wait for a game the Giants play a team who has a really good passing game going for them.

I am not concerned the Cowboys beat them on opening day. Sometimes teams tend to let up on their adversaries home field. But this is for keeping the Division lead. Cowboys should play all out to win here.

Plus the Cowboys get Tank Johnson
back this week.

The record says the Dallas Cowboys are the best team in the NFC East, and maybe in the entire NFC. The way they pummeled the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night suggests that's true, too.

But the Giants don't believe it ... at least not yet.

"We'll see," said guard Chris Snee.

Everyone will see for sure in five days when the Giants (6-2) take on the Cowboys (7-1) in a division and conference showdown at Giants Stadium. For the Cowboys, it's a chance to all but lock up the division and stake their claim as a favorite to reach the NFC Championship Game.

For the Giants - who returned to work yesterday after a bye week and a five-day vacation - it's not only a chance to stay in the division and conference races, it's also a chance to prove they belong. :nono:

Despite a six-game winning streak, the Giants know they haven't really shown anything yet. The truth is, they have had a remarkably easy schedule, especially over the last five games, which were against teams with a combined record of 8-33. :SIB :142smilie

The Cowboys haven't had a very difficult schedule either, though they did beat the Giants, 45-35, on opening night. They also have the NFL's No. 2 offense and the eighth-ranked defense. They generally are viewed as a legitimate contender, something they proved Sunday night with a dominating 38-17 win over the Eagles.

On that national stage, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was in Pro Bowl form, completing 20 of 25 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns. Terrell Owens chipped in with 10 catches for 174 yards and a touchdown. It was similar to what Romo (15-for-24, 345 yards, four touchdowns) and tight end Jason Witten (six catches, 116 yards, one touchdown) did to the Giants two months ago, when they were nearly matched by Eli Manning (28-for-41, 312 yards, four touchdowns) and Plaxico Burress (8-144-3).

The Giants have been waiting for the rematch ever since.

"After the first game of the year we had a bad taste in our mouth," Toomer said. "We felt like we let one get away from us. I think our offense played pretty well and our defense was adjusting. Now that everything is coming together, we're in much better shape to compete and beat the Cowboys." :scared

"We had a good game plan for them last time," Manning added. "We did some good stuff. So we just have to come out this week and do the same things." :SIB

If they do, and they win, it'll be a huge step for the Giants, who historically have had trouble after the bye week (4-14) and have struggled mightily in the second half of the season the last three years (8-16). And while a win would only give them a tie for the lead in the NFC East, it would let everyone else know they're as dangerous as the Cowboys. :142smilie :142smilie

Of course, that's something the Giants already believe.

I'm not taking anything away from them," Toomer said. "We played them, so we know exactly what they've got. We're definitely looking forward to proving (that to) a lot of people - making a statement with this game."
:142smilie
................................................................

No way the Giants can keep up with the Cowboys in this game.

I think Toomer is letting his mouth overload his ars. The Giants secondary is pathetic. Romo should
have a field day again 6 days after pasting the Eagles to the wall.

On it!!! Thanks for the heads up Scott. As soon as I read your post yesterday I went into BetJamaica and put in my wager (played them +1 @ -105). Also grabbed Indy minus the field goal and the Bears giving up the field goal. I know they're road favs in the NFL but love the value. Also picked up the Skins -2.5 while shopping ;)

You may have turned me onto early plays for the rest of the season. Just never had (or took) the time to do it before. Thanks.......I hope ;) :mj06:

.............................................................

This is the first time in a long time for me
to play two plays so early in the line.

The Detroit play really stands out to me as a winner.

Dallas has let me down in the past. I just think the Cowboys have way too much more overall talent not to beat the NY Giants again .

Romo is going to really have a great passing game versus NYs weaknesses in the secondary, and NY is soft up the middle and can be run on in huge gaps. NY will not be able to keep up the pace
