By TODD ARCHER / The Dallas Morning News

PLANO ? A year ago Monday, Tony Romo made the first start of his NFL career.

On Monday, the Dallas Cowboys let it be known that Romo is the quarterback for now and the future.

According to multiple sources, Romo agreed to one of the richest deals in team history with a six-year extension worth $67.5 million. The deal includes $30 million in guaranteed money and an $11.5 million signing bonus.

"It's closer than it was," Romo said. "It's neat that the organization is behind you. That makes it fun."

In total money, Romo's deal is second in team history to the nine-year, $85.5 million deal Troy Aikman signed in 1998.

The money is a staggering figure for a quarterback who has made just 17 regular season starts. But in that time, Romo has proved he can shoulder the responsibility of being the quarterback for America's Team.

Since Aikman retired after the 2000 season, the Cowboys' search for his replacement has been long and fruitless.

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones attempted to find a successor, from Quincy Carter to Chad Hutchinson to Vinny Testaverde to Drew Henson to Drew Bledsoe.

Little did Jones know that the undrafted free agent from Eastern Illinois to whom he paid a $10,000 signing bonus in 2003 would be the next link in the Cowboys quarterback chain, which includes Hall of Famers Roger Staubach and Mr. Aikman.

All along, Jones had said Romo would be his quarterback for the future, but he did not feel rushed to make a deal. Neither did Romo, who took out a $30 million insurance policy at the beginning of the season.

"It hasn't been [a distraction]," Romo said of the negotiations.

In seven games, Romo leads the NFC with 16 touchdown passes and 1,984 yards. For his career, he has completed 370 of 576 passes for 4,887 yards with 35 touchdown passes and 22 interceptions.

Most important, the Cowboys are 12-5 with Romo as a starter.

"He's the franchise," linebacker Akin Ayodele said. "He's the future of the team. ... He showed he's not going to let a contract deter him from playing. He was showing he was dedicated to his teammates."

In addition to the $11.5 million signing bonus, the Cowboys added $4.5 million to his $1.5 million base salary. Without a deal, Romo was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent when the season ended.

With the current agreement, he will be a Cowboy though 2013.

"It feels good to know this is where you're going to be for a long time," Romo said, although continuing to deny a deal was complete. "I feel like I'm going to be with the Cowboys for the rest of my career."

The $67.5 million in new money is more than St. Louis gave Marc Bulger in a six-year extension this off-season, and Romo has played in two fewer Pro Bowls than Bulger.

Romo's popularity has grown immensely since taking over for Bledsoe last season. His life has become an open book, and he has been linked to pop starlets Carrie Underwood and Sophia Bush. Having spent part of last weekend's bye in Hollywood, Romo saw his name come up in the gossip columns when he was spotted in the same circles as Britney Spears.

Romo laughed off the latest news, just as he has laughed off the many headlines he has been a part of over the last year.

............................................................

Its good going into this game that Romo is signed.

Now he can relax and just play football.

This could have a signifigant impact on this play.

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Tank Johnson was activated by the Dallas Cowboys on Monday, after completing an eight-game suspension, and is set to play his first game with his new team.

Coach Wade Phillips said Johnson had been added to the 53-man roster and would play Sunday for the NFC East-leading Cowboys (7-1) at the New York Giants. Johnson had been on the reserve-suspended list since Sept. 19, the day after he signed a two-year deal with Dallas.

"He will be part of our rotation," Phillips said. "I think he'll help us."

While Johnson's NFL suspension wasn't shortened, he was allowed to start practicing with the Cowboys two weeks ago.

Johnson spent two months in jail during the offseason because of weapons charges, both old and new.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Johnson for eight games in June. Weeks later, Johnson got pulled over for speeding at 3:30 a.m. The Chicago Bears released him soon after, though there were no charges filed in that incident.

One thing about Tank is he will crush some people.

One word to the wise though Tank.

Don't take your guns to town son, just leave
your guns at home.

The New York Giants are a regular NFL team. They play good defense but they will be exposed by the better teams. I was not impressed with the Giants secondary or linebackers.

Could be a future play for me against them.

Eli Manning played well although he is prone to the inopportune interceptions.

...........................................................

I found this I posted in the Falcons vs Giants game earlier in the season, that I won by the way.

Dallas is going to have to have a answer for Jacobs.

Eli Manning will squirt out a few interceptions, most likely in the fourth quarter.

Detroit getting a pt against the hapless Cards? I admire your confidence that the book is trying to confuse us but evry square on the planet will be on the Lions side of this game. Doesnt that bother you with this play? Im not gonna touch it but Ill be looking to see if you nailed it. Goodluck

I honestly think that the squares will be on Arizona in this game because they do not understand the intricacies of sports wagering.

Winning plays can get complicated.

I do not mind being called a square as long as they also don't forget to call me to dinner.

I normally eat fried chicken.

Cowboys at Giants: If your Giants optimism is tempered by their pre-bye pastry schedule, you aren't alone. Count defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo among the skeptics. "We'll have to find out where we are and I know the players feel that, too," Spagnuolo told the New York Post. "Let's face it, Dallas' offense certainly has to be at the top in almost every category, and what better way to find out."

The Cowboys torched the Giants for 478 yards and 45 points in the season opener. Tony Romo threw four touchdowns, and the Giants recorded just one sack. A few weeks later, the Giants defensive line started giving opposing quarterbacks the vice grip squeeze. But most of those quarterbacks had squeezable names like Lemon, Harrington and Dilfer. When the Giants played Whack-a-Mac with Donovan McNabb, the Eagles were missing left tackle William Thomas, among others. For the first time since September, the Giants' defense must prove itself against a bona fide quarterback, playing behind a healthy line, flanked by a full complement of skill position weapons.

The Giants scored 35 points in that Week 1 defeat, with Plaxico Burress burning the Cowboys deep and Eli Manning leading a series of second-half charges. If Manning can get hot and the Giants can force a Romo mistake or two, New York could win a shootout. But the Giants will need those turnovers. Despite scoring more than 30 points in four games, the Giants' offense is just average. They count on the defense to provide good field position and defensive scores. Spagnuolo's focus this week won't be to generate sacks, because Romo is hard to corral. He'll try to keep Romo in the pocket and make him throw into tight coverage.

The Cowboys have the edge, but the wind in the Meadowlands could be a factor. The Cowboys are more pass-dependent than the Giants, and the 25-mph gusts that blow through the stadium in November could limit the Romo aerial show

smurphy can you give examples? Does Warner have some history of doing well after a poor outing? Scott you almost have me convinced to take Dallas, but I'm not sold on the Lions. They have won three total games away from home the last two seasons.
