Did you serve in the Military? When and where?

I was drafted in 1967 (yes I'm old) and served in Germany for two years in a missile battalion. I worked in telecommunications. I was lucky enough to travel all through Europe in my used 62 VW that I paid $400 for, it was a great time in my life.

I was very lucky...........see below.

The Pershing ?land train? became the integral part of the first Pershing battalion activated in March 1963, at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. The first Pershing battalion was the 2nd Bn,44th Field Artillery, commanded by Lt. Col. Patrick W. Powers. Later, the battalion was redesignated the 1st Bn 41st FA, and later redesignated 4th Bn 41st FA . This battalion was then assigned to 7th Army in Germany, and headquartered in Schwaebisch Gmuend, Germany. The 4th Bn 41st FA was followed in the summer of 1964 by the 1st Battalion 81st Field Artillery, originally garrisoned in the little town of Wackernheim, a few clicks outside of Mainz, and then moved to Neu Ulm in 1968.

Upstairs watching sports on the big TV.
My first exposure to the efficiency of the military.

My first exposure to the efficiency of the military.

I first served on a submarine stationed out of Pearl Harbor Hawaii, 1969.

I was 19, Cleveland Ohio raised.

My reporting station was Philadelphia (discovered cheesesteaks downtown, saw a game at Connie Mack stadium)

I flew to Hawaii, reported in, was told my sub was in Guam. Flew out on a military flight full of dependents (screaming babies).
Upon checking in ( bus ride from airport was over miles and miles of migrating frogs) was told the sub was in Pearl Harbor; it had never left.

Spent 2 weeks in Guam waiting for return flight.
Tropical climate, rained EVERY DAY at 2:10 pm.
Women were fairly pretty till they smiled...black and red teeth.. almost all of em.
They chewed "Betel Nut" some kind of tropical caffeine. Only entertainment was post bowling alley and bar.

Remained a sub sailor for about 2 months...non-volled (un-volunteered).
Rewarded with a year tour of the rivers in the Mekong delta in Vietnam. (1970-71).

I could write a short novel on that year.

Joined the Marine Corps straight straight out of high school. Scout Sniper*Platoon 1st Bn. 24th*Marines. Got clipped first time in 84, caught a piece of shrapnel in 85 in the leg and clipped again in 87. Last one convinced me to find another profession. Served all over the world.

Hope that helps,
FDC
