Need to get in shape! The best luck I've ever had is on the Atkins program. I lost 30 pounds, but had some stomach issues and as soon as I got off it, gained it all back. With a newborn on the way and my oldest turning 5, I need to get healthy. I don't want to be the 45 year old dad who only sits and watches. Im willing to go back on Atkins, but have heard many pros and cons...I have a very busy schedule and would love to work out on a regular basis, but it just won't happen. Any thought would be appreciated.

thanks
mully

Try eating by the GI Index. Can't remember the name of the book right now but in it it has foods listed by Green/Red/ and Yellow. I've lend my book to a woman at work and she's lost 8 pounds in 7 weeks.....If interested I'll get the name and author....GL

Above the Clouds....
I tried Atkins a couple of years ago and after 2 weeks I was so weak I couldn't do anything. Last summer I lost about 48 lbs. by just eating fruit during the day. If I was hungry I would grab a handful of cherries or an apple. At nite I would eat anything I wanted but didn't seem to need as much to fill me up. Worked for me. GL

Fruit and veggies are the key.

Keep apple slices and celery sticks available.

Stay far away from bread and pastries.

Mully, you have to excersize, be it marginal, but
you have to get in a habit of some sort of calorie
takeaway, watch your calorie intake, and most
importantly, if you drink, you will be amazed at
how easy it is to take off #'s the more you limit
your drinking. Drinking = calories ( hundreds ).
Good Luck

I've lost 22 pounds over the last three months by reading................nutritional labels, that is. I started reading the fat content of foods and made an effort to stay under 60 grams per day. It was a rude awakening when I read the bag of Restaurant Style Tostitos - 7 grams total fat per serving.... serving size - 7 chips! That was the night I started having pretzels with my chili!!!

Realizing true portions / serving sizes helped me make better choices and I made a conscious effort to change my lifestyle as opposed to dieting. If I want ice cream, pizza, pasta or chocolate, I'll still have it but I make the portion sensible and try to adjust the other things I have that day. I haven't worried about carbs or calories.

After I started losing weight I became motivated to try to exercise. I started small, parking further out in the parking lot at work; taking the stairs instead of the elevator, etc. Then I found myself out buying a mountain bike and riding for the first time in 30 years! I'm only up to about a mile a few times a week but it's a start! :)

Honestly, making the decision to get healthier is the key! Good luck!

I think it is more carbs and sugar that you have to be worried about instead of the fat. I would get rid of the Pretzels too. I use to do the same thing and snack on the pretzels thinking this was okay but i never lost an ounce. I think those other steps you are taking is what is giving you the nice results. Nice job. Mully im surprised with you sobering up this hasn't knocked out some of your weight. Then again you said you were not a beer drinker.

Sponge, somehow I'm not surprised that you disagree with my weight loss method but it's worked for me. As I stated before, I didn't start exercising until I was well into losing already. I think this method is working for me because high fat items and portion control are my bigger problems.

Having lost this weight (and continuing to lose), I believe I have found the method that works for me. No diet is perfect for everyone but if it's one that works, is nutritionally balanced and doesn't make the dieter feel deprived, then I think it's valid enough for discussion.

If you ever saw the show workout the head trainer will say this about sugar and carbs. I wasn't the one that chemically broke down the diet. If what works for you works fine. If it works even better for you taking a little shot at me shoot away babe. To be honest here every single diet in the world works if you follow it.

FAN..FRIGGIN' TASTIC

Great to read this Sir...

I would suggest you take 30 min. of your new found life and walk every morning..You are going to be on the go more than ever very soon with the addition to the family..Why not combine a routine that will increase you cardiovascular and decrease your weight at the same time..
Certainly you have reached that stage of sobriety where you say to yourself.."Wow! I didn't know I could get so much done in a single day."

Anything and everything is possible for you now..

Another goal my friend..:00hour

losing weight is simple math.

1- set the goal of the weight you want to be.
2- calculate how many calories it takes to maintain your goal weight. to calculate your weight maintenece calories multiple the weight times 15. example 200 x 15 = 3000. it takes 3000 calories to maintain 200 pounds. if you go over that you will gain and if you go under you will lose.

you have to go under by 4000 calories for every pound. so, let's say you decide to consume 2000 calories per day. that saves you 1000 calories under your maintenence calories and you will lose 1 pound every 4 days. 40 days = 10 pounds. 120 days = 30 pounds.

i lost 38 pounds counting calories and there's a thread around here somewhere about it. i went from 244 to 206. i have slacked off the 'program' since the initial diet started march 2006 but i am happy sitting ot 219 today. when i start to go over 220 i get back on track and take it back down to the 215 area and then slack off again.

everything at the store has the calories printed right on the package and they even have a lot of snack packages of 100 calories each.

you will be drinking a lot of water. don't waste calories on drinks. you will eat salads with low cal dressing, a lot of chicken, lean beef, shrimp, soups. you will stay away from potatos, anything fried, all grease, all restaurants except subway turkey and ham subs on wheat with no dressing is only 600 cals for a footlond and is a lot of food for the cals. yogurt, cottage cheese.

when you get a craving, chug down a 16oz bottle of water.

don't eat at night.

no drinking but you quit that anyway.

some say you can have 1 cheat day a week but one becomes 2 and 3 and 4 and you're off the diet.

after a couple of weeks it's easy because you will see results and it gives you the incentive to stay on it.

good luck!

The ABS diet is phenomenal - Not a gimmick or anything, but the foods you can eat on it are satisfying and have some taste.
