Wasn't there some law passed to where you no longer need to lease your equipment from your provider? If I upgrade to HD It's a $299 up front cost then a monthly fee of $9.99. I am sure there are probably promo's where you don't have to pay the $299, or something less, but I thought I read something where you could just buy your own equip and not pay any lease fees.

Before you guys go spending money on teh HD DVR...

if you are a current customer... call directv... tell them you want to cancel service (voice prompt) and you will go to the retention department.

Once there talk to an agent and tell them you are looking at HD packages with local cable providors (have an ad handy from whoever your local cable company is) ask if there are any promos that will help you stay with direct tv and get the HD programming.

Tomorrow night the guy is coming out to install my new HD set up.

I got:
HD DVR - free! (19.95 shipping and handling charge)
1 year free Showtime
1 year free HD programming

overall, my new monthly bill is going to be less than it was prior to me getting the HD DVR set up.
(before this I just had 2 DVRs in the house)

Folks at all the major deal discussion sites have been talking about the directv push to retain customers with the new HD programming instead of losing us to cable providers. Take advantage of it!

I was also wondering when the new channels are going to hit the airways, guess we will just have to wait some more.

I would not switch from directv if they gave me cable for free, the sunday ticket is awesome especially superfan, love it.

Marine;
Can you either post or email me with the links to the deal discussion sites, that would help. I'm on the fence also....

if i already subscribe to the 10-15 hd channels they have, is there going to be an extra charge for the new service? although direct tv is better than anything else available in my area i sure hate the way they treat existing customers. always a special or promo to get you signed on and then extra charges for what they give away for free to new customers ( hd dvr) if you're already with them. probably need to try the cancellation threat i guess ( now that my original contract is over) but nothing else is comparable. gotta be a way to get my free sunday ticket again this year lol.

No, if you already pay the 9.99 for HD you get the new channels at no additional cost

Make sure you check to make sure you don't need a B-Band Converter (BBC) module.

The B-Band Converter (BBC) module, installed on your HR20/HR21 or H20/H21 receiver, allows you to view the upcoming HD channels. Because DIRECTV's current HD channels do not require the BBC, it may not have been installed.

Please note: The BBC module works only with the H20/H21 and HR20/HR21 receivers. The information here applies only to DIRECTV customers with one of these receivers. If you live in an apartment or condo in a building where multiple units share one dish, please click here for more info.

The easiest way to tell if your H20/H21 or HR20/HR21 receiver has the BBC connected to it is to look at the back of the receiver. Look for a module that looks like the one pictured to the right. If you can't access the back of your receiver and you have an HR20/HR21 receiver, tune in to the BBC test channel ? number 499:
If you get a message that reads "Searching for signal on Satellite In," you'll be able to enjoy new HD channels from DIRECTV as they become available.
If you see the message "Important HD Information. Your B-Band Converter module is NOT connected," you do not have the BBC or it is not connected properly.
If you see a gray or blank screen, DIRECTV will have to verify your equipment setup to determine if you need a BBC. Please call Customer Service at 1-800-531-5000.

One more thing.. if you have to two satellite inputs you will need two B-Band Converters

I just ordered two B-Band Converters.

Directv informed my they delayed the rollout a few more days. It was going to happen today.

Has anyone heard anything new as to when these channels will be launched.

On their website they changed it to say they will have some out this month and 70 HD Channels by the end of October.
It just seems noone has any clue to when they will available. Even when you cal them directly they sound like they have been programmed to say the same thing. Then follow up by directing me to their website for updates.

well now that i have vented a little if any of use hear anything please let me know

thanks
