My kid got a new DVD player and gave me his old one. Said to get an "S" cable, plug it inti the DVD player and tv, and I'll be all set.

Yeah, right!

I did that, and here are the results:

BEFORE installing the DVD:

Directv - working fine
Tivo - working fine
Bottle of Jack Daniels - half full

AFTER installing the DVD and "S" cable:

Directv - screen goes black when "S" cable is plugged in
DVD - Picture is good, but the sound is from whatever tv program is on, not of the movie being played.
Bottle of Jack Daniels - 1/4 full!

What am I doing wrong????

First of all, the S cable will override the picture, so that explains that, also, the S cable does not carry sound on it so you will need audio cables from the DVD to the tv or stereo (whichever you use for sound).

I am no expert, but it seems the Directv and dvd want to use the same channel on the TV, there should be a place on the dvd to change that or at least a place to run it through the directv box.

Again, I am no expert, but is there an S-Video input on the Directv box anywhere? If so plug the S-video cable in there, you will still need audio cables to hear sound from the DVD player.

Otherwise, and I am an expert here, finsish the other 1/4 bottle of Jack.

What kind of inputs do you have on the back your tv, is it one where you need to change the input? Just one set and you have to swap them or multiples and you jsut have to change it when you watch different things IE you have it on Video 1 to watch tv and Video 2 to watch DVDs?

Also you say Directv and Tivo, are they two seperate boxes?

Do you have anything plugged into a receiver that then outputs the video and audio? For example I have all of my component video feeds (hdtivo, xbox360 and dvd player) input into a receiver and then only one video output to the tv so its easy to keep track of.

Sounds like you are looking at the tv on the dvd video channel but have not matched up the dvd audio output. Svideo is for the video feed, you also need to get the sound from the dvd player to the tv somehow, either the red/white RCA plugs that would run from the dvd player to the tv, or from the dvd player to a receiver.

Give me a better idea of the setup right now, what is running out from the dvd player and where are they running to?

Sounds like you have:

DTV Box: video out and audio out - > TV
DVD: video out -> TV - but no audio
