Great weekend last weekend, let's hope the winning continues.

Some early observations:

Are the Bears 10 points better than the Seahawks? Is there any value in this line?

Let's throw out the 45-3 game, and say the Patriots beat them 31-28. Would the line be 8.5?

Pitt/Baltimore in a big game? What's the game plan on either side?

Atlanta vs. GB. Rematch. Like the Packers chances from first glance.

Back later with the writeups.

Patriots - Jets

Patriots - Jets

I'm going to try to cap this game with my brain, not my penis.

That said, let's look into the numbers, and take a peek into some key matchups/how this game will be won. Then, we'll see if there's any value in the point spread.

The Pats come in with a record of 4-3-1 ATS at home. After a Week 9 embarrassment at Cleveland, they have not looked back. They are 7-1 SU against playoff teams...the key???

Coaching - BB has done a masterful job getting a defense that lost starting CB Bodden and DE Warren to IR before the season even started. On the other side of the ball, he traded his starting RB, and got 2 guys off the scrap heap, one who has big play ability (Woodhead) and one who rushed for 1,000 yds (Green-Ellis) in a pass first offense. He also traded future HOFer Randy Moss. They have gone 11-1 since his departure.

Jets are 5-3 ATS on the road. 2-4 SU vs. playoff teams. Last trip to Foxboro, they lost 45-3. The Patriots couldn't have played much better, and the Jets couldn't have played much worse. So, although I feel they are a better team, I think 45-3 this weekend is out of the question.

The Jets do not fear the Patriots.

They do not fear going on the road. They beat Indy on the road, and they will play in Nome, AL and be content.

Mark Sanchez is 0-2 in Foxboro.

Tom Brady is 2-3 in his last 5 playoff games.

A lot of people up here like to dismiss the Jets. Truth be told, they've done more the last 2 years than New England has. All NE has done was got blown out by Jack's Ravens last year. According to folk lore up here, the Jets backed in, then got lucky and got lucky again. Well, up here we watched AFC Championship game from the couch.

These aren't the Jets of Herm Edwards or Rich Kotite.

After the last win, the Patriots said they saw some key matchups they knew they could exploit. Will they find something similar and execute this game plan? If so, this game won't be close.

How will the Jets win?

On Offense: Run the football. They need to establish the run, early and often. What prevented the Indy game from being as close was only executing this plan in the 2nd half. With Wilfork and Gerard Warren on the line, the Pats greatly miss Ty Warren. They have made it through the regular season, but with Mike Wright placed on IR this week, the Pats will most likely look to Kyle Love to start on the line. Love, and another rookie, Brandon Deadrick, have been effective, but can they continue to play well during the playoffs?
Long, sustained drives. Sanchez has come a long way, and will be a good quarterback. I still think he's more of a manager. If he gets into a shootout, he's going to lose. The clock draining drives they had in the Indy game put them in position to win.

On Defense: They must disrupt Brady. The Manning/Brady debate aside, the Jets know they're going up against one of the best. How do you rattle him?
Rush up the middle: Can Pouha an Ellis create enough pressure on the line to allow a LB to freelance and fly in off the end, or via stunt?
The Indy game plan tells a lot of what NY might do defensively on Sunday. Give them the run, or force Manning to make the quick throw off the snap. They were content playing nickel for most of the game. Is Brady better at finding the hot read? I'd say no better or worse than PM, he just may have one more weapon...

How do the Patriots win?

Offense: Early lead. Make it a shootout. If they go up early, and force NY to become a pass first, they will win going away. Once BB makes you one dimensional, it's going to be a long day. They'll need to hit the hot receiver, or find Woodhead out of the backfield. They won't use the run to set up the pass, but do the complete opposite. 4 guys last game had 50+ receiving yards. They'll want to play wide open, and keep the Jets playing from behind.

Defense: Bring the house. Force Sanchez to make bad decisions. The Patriots have Brandon Spikes back from suspension, but will his 4 week hiatus hurt him? They cannot let the run be effective, or they will be drawn into playing NYJ's brand of football, and leave themselves open to an upset.

Rex says Super Bowl or Bust. The Patriots are thinking the same thing. People are giving him a hard time up here for saying that. What is he supposed to say; "Just happy to be here?"

I admire his bravado. A lot of people call him a blow hard. Truth be told, he coached circles around Jim Caldwell, who's sideline antics remind of Weekend at Bernies.

Is 8.5 too high? After a win AT Indy, to me they are looking for Jets money. The line opened at 9, and has moved off one of gambling's magic numbers. It's a lot of points for a divisional matchup/rivalry.

The Patriots haven't lost at home since last year vs. the Ravens. I think they have the upper hand, and I'll lay the points. 31-10 New England.

Steelers/Ravens

Steelers/Ravens

Steelers come in 5-3 ATS at home this year. They are 2-4 vs. playoff teams. 3 of those losses are at home.

Baltimore 5-2-1 ATS on the road. They are 3-3 against playoff teams this year. Their defense looks like the machine it once was. The Steelers, however, are not the Chiefs.

Baltimore needs to air out the ball, and take chances against Pitt's corners. Ditto for the Steelers.

I think this game is won in the air. Who would you rather have? Big Ben may be a doofus off the field, but he has 2 rings, and is a proven winner.

Flacco may have some ways to go, but he can throw the ball.

Which QB will be sharper on Saturday?

Looks like the public is on Baltimore, yet the line shot up to 3.5

The under is 9-7 in Pitt's games and 9-7 in Baltimore's games.

I don't think this will be the classic run it, play stingy defense, field goal/1 big play for each team type game.

Instead, I see an aerial attack on both sides. Forecast calls for low 30s, and 30% chance of snow.

Over 36.5 gets the call.

Bears/Seahawks

Bears/Seahawks

Can Seattle do it again? Win outright as a DD dog?

What is the identity of this Bears team?

Chicago comes in boasting its stingy d as usual. Their offense remains a little shaky, especially starting with the play caller. Martz has done a good job with Cutler, but has he regressed?

Seattle comes in riding high, for all intents and purposes, playing with house money. Are they destined to make a run at the Super Bowl?

Seattle came to Chicago in week 6, and won outright, 23-20. Hasselbeck says a key factor in their victory was the absence of Lance Briggs. Well, Briggs is playing this week.

The Bears are 3-3 against playoff teams this year. The Seahawks are 1-3 in the regular season.

A 10 point spread is a lot in a game where I think it stays under the posted price.

The Hags are 2-6 ATS on the road this year.

I know they beat them once. I know they can beat them again. This is the NFL. I just don't see it happening. I think the run is up. Chicago has had an extra week of rest to get healthy.

Line sets up similarly for Seattle in my opinion as it did last week. This makes sense in my mind, but I'll try to put it on paper. Seattle was +10.5 last week, yet weeks before that they were only +7 against Atlanta, who on paper, is a better team than New Orleans. Why all of a sudden the extra points here? To me, it was hooking as many people into New Orleans as possible.

I know it was much earlier in the season, but I see a similar situation. Seattle was grabbing 6 on the road. Now, you're coming off a huge win over the defending SB Champs, and you're being spotted an extra field goal?

Is LV's perception of the Bears that weak? I could see this being a factor, but not enough to shade 3 points to the spread.

24-3 Chicago, in a snoozer.

Good Luck.

Green Bay/Atlanta

Green Bay/Atlanta

Atlanta 4-2 vs. playoff teams.
GB 3-3 (regular season)

Atlanta finished the season with a 7-1 run against the spread. We saw them win three straight on the road following a win hosting the very opponent they will face in Week 2 of the NFL playoffs.

The Packers come in playing good defense, and good offense. They definitely have the Championship pedigree. Can they win in the Dome vs. a good offense?

Short answer...Yes.

Although the Falcons are 10th against the run in terms of yardage, I think the Packers front line can open up enough holes to establish the run.

We saw what they did to Philly in regards to dialing up the blitz.

Matt Ryan is pretty poised. New Orleans is the only team that has gotten to him at home. I expect GB to run a lot of cover blitzes. Force Ryan to beat them.

I think the line is pretty telling. Atlanta getting no respect on a field that they went 7-1 on this year.

Packers 24, Falcons 21

Very nice writeups hogman....

I would like Chicago & NE if I knew for sure what the weather will be....Right now I have no opinion on the GB / Atl. game & if push comes to shove I would take the under in the Balt / Pitt game, as it is I took under in the first half because since both teams know each other well, I see it as a feeling out period....

Good luck....

Good luck....

Weather for Chi is high of 20 with a chance of snow, not a lot though if it does, and it looks to be windy 10-20 NW winds.

Thank you sir.

What weather would you like for the Monsters of the Midway and the Pats? Gonna be cold up here in New England. High 33, low 19. Probably be high 20s by game time.

I saw your stats on that total. Interesting stuff. I think the game opens up in the 2nd half. But I do think both teams come out heaving it.

Good Luck!
