Do car dealers usually ask to copy your ID?

Stopped to look at Honda Ridgeline and decided to test drive. Salesman asks to copy my ID. I asked if he were going with me and he said yes. I told him he didn't need my ID until negotiations. He said was store policy. I left.

Is that normal to get copy or am I just being paranoid? (Thought later I should of asked for a copy of his ID.)

as far as i know it is, regardless of whether he comes along for the test drive. i've gave it to them before.
Besides it's just your drivers license, it doesn't have your social on it. Some even make sure you have insurance on the car you drove in, and/or make sure you came in a vehicle.

you wouldn't believe the people who act like they want a car and then just drive off with it, some even will make the salesmen get out at gunpoint if he came along.

recently a dude was test driving a dodge charger with the salesman in it and was doing over 100 on a regular 4 lane road, not an interstate, and hit a car and killed some people.

Didn't consider any of that. I've always paid for my vehicles.

Some places request that, some don't. They do it for a variety of reasons, but ultimately to protect the dealership. Criminals go into car places for a variety of reasons and it protects the dealership and employees to at least know who they are dealing with.

Did some work for a car dealership the last 2 weeks. My god some of those salesman out there are like vultures and they look like lame ducks standing around in the parking lot.

Recently purchased 1st car ever from a dealer--all previously directly from owner.

Was asked for license and insurance--

i'm with you, wayne. with the info available to consumers now, the lot is usually unnecessary mark-up.

Of course it's normal. Not just normal, but required by their insurance carrier. Having to show a valid drivers license to drive one of their cars shouldn't have come as that much of a surprise.

Lost in Texas
yes, i think it was from the Montgomery Dealership at Preston and Indian Trail, the wreck was on Fern Valley, it's a long wide open stretch between Preston Hwy. and Old Shepherdsville Rd.

I saw that Challenger at the impound yard. I was wondering what the story was on that car since it still had the sticker on the window. :0corn
