to the homeless or down-and-out folks at traffic lights?

I gave a lady $20 today. She just looked like she was having a bad day. She seemed so grateful. Tears formed in her eyes. I hope she used it for lunch or dinner and not cigs or booze. I'll never know but I felt good after I did it. The holidays are coming. I hope to help someone out again.

Things have really turned around for Nole and family. Just payin' it forward.

I do. My wife is quick to remind me that they are probably gonna just spend it on booze or take it to the casino.

I'm quick to remind here that that's what I was gonna do with it anyway.

For all the years i spent in Las Vegas esp down town i wd get 20 singles and a few 5's and give out $1 o $5 when ever some one asked. However i found out that so many of these folks run this as a business and make $300 $400 / week. Since then have cut back a lot. Last 2 winters i spent 4 months in Puerto Rico and rest of Caribbean. Saw only 1 beggar in all of PR and that was coming out of San Juan's Condado to get to the Balderoty Expway. Wd give him 5 bucks each night. Solution is to Waterboard every Republican that wants to cut Social programs But not tax the Koch Brothers and Sheldon Adelson so they have billions to spend on attack adds but let their own citizens starve and go homeless. Oh I forgot Waterboarding shd include Tazing of genitals,,, Followed by gradual increase in taxes back to the post FDR 94 % tax rate... i rest my case !!!!

Here is my philosophy on this matter. Sometimes I give, but usually not. I like to support a local charity routinely that helps those in need, and our church has several outreach programs I have been involved in.

Sometime I will give like u described above or put a little gas in somebody's car. The philosophy I have is I helped them in a small way just like I would want to be helped if in that situation. If they misuse that money, so be it; it's on them and not me.

Last time

Last time

Last time I ran into one he was sitting outside of a McDonalds and I was going through the drive through. I had the window down, he looked down and out and asked me for money. I said I'll buy you anything on the menu, and I was thinking I could give him a ten and a five or whatever change I had leftover from a twenty since I was just coming through for a cup of coffee. He said no and started walking away. This was in North East DC (New York Avenue) and there are liquor stores everywhere. My father in law got the similar results in Prague while my wife and I were on vacation. I tend to think they could probably get on their feet if they wanted to because of the number of shelters around (but those shelters don't house them if they are using alcohol). Haven't tried since.

Maybe his preference was Burger King?

True story:

Many years ago I worked in a hobby shop.
It was in a fairly run down area and pan-handlers would come in bumming a quarter for coffee. The owner almost always complied.
One day while I was at work an "obvious" street person came in, the owner headed towards the cash register to get a quarter ready.

The street person asked me if we sold plastic currency holders....we did, they were 29 cents.

He said "give me 2" paid for them, reached in his overcoat, pulled out a $500 and $1000 bill.

He put the currency in the holders, put them in his overcoat and headed out the door.....

I learned a very valuable life lesson..."NEVER judge a book by its cover"....

Was just out in San Fran recently and the panhandlers there are real pro's. Was heading back to the hotel late night and one of the dudes sing 'I've been waiting... for a buck from you' like the Foreigner 80s hit.

After laughing my ass off, I paid him.

I've never seen so many of them in one city until I visited San Fran. Some of them were pretty funny and some of them were annoying as hell, was there with a friend and we ended up giving the amusing ones a few bucks while we were at a bar in the outside area.

If you don't want to be bothered by them the key is not to make eye contact.
