Colorado Teens Fined for Giving Cookies to Neighbor

Fri Feb 4

DURANGO, Colo. (Reuters) - A Colorado judge ordered two teen-age girls to pay about $900 for the distress a neighbor said they caused by giving her home-made cookies adorned with paper hearts.

The pair were ordered to pay $871.70 plus $39 in court costs after neighbor Wanita Renea Young, 49, filed a lawsuit complaining that the unsolicited cookies, left at her house after the girls knocked on her door, had triggered an anxiety attack that sent her to the hospital the next day.

Taylor Ostergaard, then 17, and Lindsey Jo Zellitte, 18, paid the judgment on Thursday after a small claims court ruling by La Plata County Court Judge Doug Walker, a court clerk said on Friday.

The girls baked cookies as a surprise for several of their rural Colorado neighbors on July 31 and dropped off small batches on their porches, accompanied by red or pink paper hearts and the message: "Have a great night."

The Denver Post newspaper reported on Friday that the girls had decided to stay home and bake the cookies rather than go to a dance where there might be cursing and drinking.

It reported that six neighbors wrote letters entered as evidence in the case thanking the girls for the cookies.

But Young said she was frightened because the two had knocked on her door at about 10:30 p.m. and run off after leaving the cookies.

She went to a hospital emergency room the next day, fearing that she had suffered a heart attack, court records said.

The judge awarded Young her medical costs, but did not award punitive damages. He said he did not think the girls had acted maliciously but that 10:30 was fairly late at night for them to be out.

They didn't have to go this far with the story, did they?

I found this on a blog spot...too funny...

I doubt they'll have the urge to do anything nice for neighbors ever again. Thanks, Wanita. 2 more people, jaded and cynical, because you had to prove a point. They f*****g APOLOGISED and offered to pay the medical bills for you! But that wasn't enough. You b***ched about people showing up at your door with homemade treats, baked out of kindness, yet you complained when they didn't return to your house to say they were sorry in person.

There's no contest this week. Wanita Renea Young, you get the "Sandy Vagina Award."

Also, you have been featured on Morons.org (and rightfully so, t*at.) Do us all a favor, and shoot yourself in the head, so that the rest of the population won't have to deal with your bulls**t ever again.

For your sake, I hope you're barren, because the last thing we need is your offspring clogging up the filters in the gene pool.

If she was so frightened why the hell did she eat the cookies. If they dropped off a bag of shit would she have eaten that too?

Can a judge be dissbarred? Something ought to be done about this :cursin:

Yes, they can be removed from the bench, but unfortunately it has to be for something worse than not having any common sense, such as this idiot. A judge a couple of years ago from somewhere in northern Missouri got caught accepting 10K to dismiss a case. He was a goner. It would be nice for a change to have these control freaks who sit on the bench to actually make a statement to people like this who are doing nothing more than trying to make a buck and put a stop to this kind or crap and atleast make her pay everybodies attornies fees. It doesn't pay to take the high road anymore.

I'm sure ms. Young is mental. If this would have been more than small-claims where the girls could have had attorneys to investigate, she's probably been admitted to the local psych ward more than once, and she probably takes a couple of bars of Xanax every day anyway. There's more to it than was told in this story. 1030 is too late, but give me a break. Ridiculous.

On the course!
All I know is this:

This story will have plenty of people within a 30 minute drive, egging her house, poo-ing her house, etc..........

I would be willing to bet she winds up moving over this.
