even though it was a terribly bone-headed play, did he really cost France the cup?? They lost in penalty kicks to the Italians who went 5 for 5. He would have probably shot instead of the last guy who didn't get to shoot, so same result. I also agree that the Italian keeper should have been highly considered for the trophy.

According to a BBC deaf lip reader: "you're the son of a terrorist whore". Apparently Zidane is the son of Algerian refugees raised in Marseille.

Not defending him in any way just wanted to list what I read.

Imagine if a guy with a noted flare up history (like Zindane) say called Ron Artest a "dirty lazy, porch monkey house ******..
I am sure Artest would just turn his cheek..
Also, The press would kill this guy..Oh no not the Italians or most here in the US .. Good play.. bait the guy.. Very Hypocritical...
Plus take a look at some of the lovely italian soccer fans.. throwing bananas, flying the swastika flag Heil Hitlering during goals..
Chanting Monkey to the African players...
Why do you think they had the stop Racism banner out before the game??
Calling a guy a son of a terrorist whore IS NOT GAMESMANSHIP...

"My act is not forgivable," Zidane said. "But they must also punish the true guilty party, and the guilty party is the one who provokes."

I think it would be in Zidane's best interest to let this issue rest. Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. I think that is one of the first things I can remember that my mom said to me. No matter what Materazzi said, Zidane was the center of the world's attention at that moment and he should have been the bigger man. Instead, Materazzi got exactly what he wanted. That's not too smart - you never want to give your opponent an edge emotionally or otherwise...

And who are we to believe anyway--

"I didn't say anything to him about racism, religion or politics," Materazzi told the Gazzetta dello Sport. "I didn't talk about his mother either. I lost my mother when I was 15 and even now I still get emotional talking about her."

Zidane "has always been my hero," Materazzi said. "I admire him a lot."
