HABITAT: Brown recluse spiders are found primarily in the Midwest. Many cases of bites are reported from Texas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. The edge of its range just reaches the tip of western Virginia, but it occurs rarely in this state. The spider commonly lives in basements and garages of houses and often hides behind boards and boxes. Bites often occur when the spiders hide in towels or old clothes left in those areas.

The brown recluse may be found living indoors or outdoors. Thorough inspection of cracks, corners, and other dark, undisturbed areas with a bright flashlight will help determine the location and extent of infestation. Indoors, pay particular attention to basements, attics, crawl spaces, closets, under/behind beds and furniture, inside shoes, boxes of stored items, and between hanging clothing. Brown recluse spiders also may be found living above suspended ceilings, behind baseboards, and inside ductwork or registers.

The bite generally causes some mild stinging or burning and ulcerative necrosis may follow within several hours to several weeks. The initial lesion may be red, edematous or blanched and may later may develop a blue-gray halo around the puncture. This is the result of hemolysis and vasospasm. The lesion may evolve into cyanotic pustules or bullous lesions surrounded by purpura. Eschar formation begins several days later as the lesion becomes necrotic. Other clinical findings may include fever, maliase, a scarlatiniform rash, leukocytosis, arthralgias, vomiting, and diarrhea. In rare cases there may be hemoglobinuria, DIC and shock.

LOL...the bite can also cause kidney failure, jaundice (from liver failure), coma and death.

I have a buddy who was bitten by one of those things 3 inches from the base of his shaft    He almost waited too long to go to the doctor and ended up with surgery. They left the wound open, and he had to pack it daily for a month while it closed in. We have a lot of those things around here, and I know several people who have been bitten. They aren't fun!

nope, bit him in his bed. Most people get bitten in their sleep and wake up with a sore spot and find it that way.

I heard about that happening to some guy in the Air Force, but I think it was his room mate that gave him the sore spot:eek:
