Don't you always kick the extra point if you score on the last play?

Or is the rule worded such that you only kick if it has a potential impact on the game outcome?

That's not the way it is in the NFL; or at least it didn't used to be. I remember about 10 years ago winning an Eagles bet when they scored on the last play and still kicked the XP even though they were still down 7 after it.

MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE RULES IS THE NFL ALWAYS KICKS IT. JUST LIKE THE NBA ALWAYS SHOOTS FREE THROWS IN SIMILAR SITUATIONS....COLLEGE FB ONLY IF IT HAS AN IMPACT ON OUTCOME OF GAME.

rule 8-2-2(a)

rule 8-2-2(a)

The answer to your question is No; the scoring team will not be allowed to kick an extra point or try for 2 points since the extra point would not affect the outcome of the game. (NCAA Rule 8-2-2(a)).

You indicated that the "game is out of reach" thus I assume you mean the score is such that the extra point would not change the out come. If the score is close enough that the extra point could affect or change the out come of the game, the Try will be allowed.

This rule has been edited by the rules committee a few times over the past 15 years because it was thought that after every TD the scoring team should be allowed to Try for an extra point to allow kickers to maintain or beat records and other statistical reasons. But it was later decided these are not sufficient reasons to allow an extra try attempt when the points would not affect the result of the game.

I lost a teaser bet some years back when the Nebraska fans rushed on the field after a touchdown with a few seconds left and they ripped down the goal post.

No extra point........:scared

A few years ago in Buffalo someone scored late and it was disputed by Buffalo they lost the dispute and left the field. The other team still had to do the extra point and since there was no defenders they ran it in for two and it made a huge difference in the pointspread it made winners out of losers and losers out of winners this place was hopping mad. Maybe even before the replay rules came in
