What is the state of music downloading from places like winmx, I keep hearing stories on the news about somebody downloading like 3 songs and getting 15 to life for doing it (that's what you get for hiring Eddie Haskell to represent you). Is it still safe to download and burn music, heading to Atlantinc City first part of the week and would like some road music for the drive.

I am sure there are people here that know much more than me about the implications of downloading music off the net. I currently use Kazaa lite to d'load music. I know about a year ago was when we all 1st heard about the RIAA suing individuals for doing this. At the time I felt it was just a scare tactic, and to be honest, still do. I know there have been reports of several people who got in trouble, but I never followed up enough to find out if it was really true and/or what kind of punishment they got. And the total members of Kazaa has only grown since this all started. I also know i visit a few msg boards related to music and downloading music and not one person has said anything about getting in trouble or knowing anyone personally that got in trouble. Obviously as many people as this is, it's still a very small %age of the total people doing it. Basically if they are still trying to find people doing it then maybe I am pushing my luck. But I just feel if they are only going after a handful of people then I really am not too concerned someone is going to show up at my door telling me I am under arrest for doing so when there are so many people doing it. Anyway I know this does not really answer your question but it is just my thoughts on it.

They can bust anyone they wanted anywhere/anytime they wanted to. It's pretty simple. Every song has a special encryption within it. All the "record companies" have to do is compare your downloaded song with theirs. If the encryptions match...Viola! Unless you know how to change the encryption of the song you've downloaded, then it's pretty much up for grabs. I don't think it's these Peer to Peer people they want to bust. To think that they would keep someone in litigation over a few gig of music is beyond me. Then again, I'm not a lawyer...

I use winmx and have had absolutely no problems. I've been using it for over 3 years now as a matter of fact. The guy that built my computer told me not to have any "shared files" and just download whatever i want. IMO there are so many people doing it, that the only way to control it is to just shut the sites down completely. Now i don't know about kazaa lite, but kazaa infected the files in my computer and i had to do a complete restore. It has things like bargain hunter and some other shit that attach themselves to whatever you're downloading. And using add/remove programs will not work because it doesn't disable them. Winmx is what i recommend and have fun on your trip. :)
