Dogface, I agree with what you wrote. My reply was more directed at the people who assume it is "easy" to pay back that much debt, that isn't true.

This has gotten off topic from was Dr. originally was bitching about. IT was more to do about the reason behind the rise, ie minority funding.

totally agree with the saint. dogface, your point is valid to an extent, however, in my position, if something were to happen to my wife i would be f'd with her debt. on the other hand i could die a millionaire ? by the time we make / save all that money i will be spending $5 every time i want to get a woody !!! either way it is not going to change and you are right that we will have to adapt.

Alright guys.........

Alright guys.........

It may seem like a lot of debt now but when you professionel people are making 1.2m per year 15/20 years from now it will not be that threatening.

When I graduated in 1968 my debt was significant at a coupla G
My first job paid about 8G and my first new car was about $2500.

My kids are among the fortunate ones whose parents were able to pay for everything........My youngest is a senior this year and.............for me.......... ITS OVER!
:D I'm some 250G lighter but I could not have spent the money more wisely. My kids are grateful and all doing well. I'm not one who believes that debt builds character.

You'll make $ every which way as life goes on.......probably more on your first house than you'll need to pay off all loans....(after you buy one and live in it for some time)

Oh........If I had significant debt ,however,........I definitely would NOT be gambling! I know, i know........thats awful preachy.

Anyway,
Don't let debt in todays dollars scare you too much......the dollar will continue to lose its value and your debt will not adjust for inflation.....it will look smaller and smaller as time goes on.

Feel good that you will be poised to be one of the winners as a highly educated person with marketable skills!

Bear I agree money well spent on your self and your children. I would do it all over again. I did have them earn some of that money just so they understood the world is not free. For those who don't get that help. A part time job helps. In fact my last year of school was with a full time job. All was worth it. You all come out ahead in long run. And those part time jobs help in your back ground check when going for your first big full time job. And if your really ticked. Do something about these cost in the next election.

I don't think parents should pay for their kid's whole education. You have to value it more if you put yourself through school. How could you not? I think it's nice for parents to help, but what lessons are learned when everything is given to a kid? I put myself through and came out not owing anybody any money, and I finished Cum Laude. It can be done.

Ever read Heinleins "friday"??? "The right to a free education at 18+"

I received an academic excellence package that included not just tuition but an admission slot to the school of MY choosing. High SAT scores, GPA and class standing got me a tuition scholarship. Schools hand it out on the basis of demonstrated potential, if you have failed to show potential you fall back in the scholarship pack. Loans and pell grants are still available based on need, BUT openings in the schools you still should have to compete for. There are a lot of kids going to college who have no business being there except for the fact that it delays moving on into their adult life. I manage a full time job and full time school. I have since I started and I'm going for my Masters. I don't owe a dime. It takes a lot of determination, motivation, and want, but it IS possible. Where there is a will there is a way!!!
