The .22 Long Rifle delivers about 200 Ft-Lbs of energy at the muzzle. It is certainly capable of killing a human, depending on the range and where the victim is struck. It was allegedly the assassination weapon of choice for Mafia hit men, a single shot behind the ear being 100% fatal. You may remember that Ronald Reagan was attacked by a would be assassin who used a .22. He was hit once in the chest and very nearly died. His press secretary James Brady was hit once on the side of the head and disabled for life. Both were shat at a distance of a few feet. Had the assassin used a .223, large chunks of Reagan's heart and lungs would have been blown out of his back, and Brady's brain would have been splattered on the wall. They both would have died instantly.

So, yes .22 is dangerous. A single hit can be lethal, especially at close range.

The .223, AKA NATO 5.56 mm is totally different. It is a military round, sometimes armor piercing, intended to kill humans at short and long range. It's muzzle energy is about 1200 Ft-lbs, six times the power of the .22. It is designed to splinter on contact, thereby causing multiple wound channels.

You may recall the Congressman Steve Scalise was shot with a 5.56. The bullet struck him in the hip, and caused multiple injuries to his internal organs. He required massive blood transfusions and multiple surgeries, and he did survive, but only because a helo was available to evacuate him quickly. Had he been transported by ambulance, he would probably have not made it.

Bottom line: either caliber can be fatal but it you want to kill someone, , go with the .223. One in the head or chest will do the job out to a mile or so.

The Congressman was correct about the .223. It was designed expressly as a military grade rifle, capable of killing or disabling enemy soldiers with a single hit at long range.

The .22 rimfire is suitable for target shooting or small game like squirrels. To claim that those two calibers are in any way comparable is complete nonsense.

And the civilian version, the AR15 is the preferred weapon of those who wish to commit mass murders - Orlando, Vegas, Florida and others. The AR15 is the fastest selling firearm in the USA. There are, literally, millions of them out there, and we will see them used over and over in mass murders.

The NRA labels them Sporting Rifles. Uh huh. Tell that to the hundreds of civilians they have killed.

They were banned from 1994-2004, but the NRA frightened enough citizens and bought enough congressmen that the ban ended.

We banned full auto weapons in 1933 because of the carnage they had caused. The number of people killed with full auto "Tommy Guns" is minuscule compared to the number killed with AR15s.

The infamous Saint Valentine's Day Massacre which resulted in banning full auto weapons resulted in the deaths of 7 (SEVEN!) people. The country was horrified.

Today mass killings are so common that they make the news for a day or two, the NRA calls for more folks to own guns, and our Congressmen go back to taking bribes.


How long will it be until another dozen school children are gunned down by a nutjob? A day, a week, a month? And what will be done?

Oh, the President will give a five minute speech about how he feels the pain, then return to his office to choke down a few Happy Meals and grab a few pussies.

I do not own rifles or pistols simply because I don't want to. I do own shotguns with which I sometimes hunt birds and often shoot clay targets. I do not permit loaded guns of any sort in my house.

The gun club I belong to is probably the least likely place anyone will ever be shot. There are rules which are enforced. Walk onto the property with a loaded gun and you will be told to leave and never come back. Guns may be loaded only when you are on the stand and it is your turn to shoot. Violate the rules and you will get the boot.

There are no assholes with a loaded pistola in their pocket.

The club was formed in 1949. About three million rounds are fired per year, 200,000,000 since the club was formed. No one has ever been injured.

But the streets and Wal*Mart are filled with assholes exercising their 2A rights. And there is a gun killing every week or two.
