I just heard over sports radio that Tony Dungy's son was found dead in his apartment, he was only 18 years old. Sorry to hear about this, and I'm not sure what to think.

No way..

From ESPN:
James Dungy, the 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, was found dead at 1:30 a.m. ET Thursday in his apartment in Lutz, Fla., a suburb of Tampa, Debbie Carter, a spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, confirmed Thursday.

A death investigation is under way, and the spokesperson said that the county medical examiner's office or the hospital at which James Dungy was pronounced dead would have a ruling on the cause of death.

James Dungy officially was pronounced dead this morning at University Community Hospital in Tampa.

Tony Dungy has left the Colts and is in Tampa. Indianapolis plays at Seattle this Saturday.

I cannot explan how great of a person/family man Coach Dungy is.

This has to be the worst possible news in the NFL this year.My prayers go out to the family /friends of this great Coach.

This is totally devastating

LUTZ, Fla. (AP) - James Dungy, the 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, was found dead in a Tampa-area apartment, police said Thursday.

In a news release on its Web site, the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office said it "responded to the Campus Lodge Apartments this morning at approximately 1:32 a.m. The girlfriend of James Dungy had returned to the apartment and discovered Dungy."
Police performed CPR on Dungy before he was taken to University Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No foul play is suspected, but a cause of death won't announced pending an autopsy, said Vida Morgan, a secretary in the sheriff's public information office. The apartments are located in Lutz, Fla.

Tony Dungy has left the Colts and is in Tampa, according to NFL.com.

The coach and his wife, Lauren, have four other children: daughters Tiara and Jade and sons Eric and Jordan.

The Colts (13-1) are at Seattle on Saturday.

Fans posted prayers and messages of support for Dungy, who also coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, on a message board on a Colts fan Web site.

"Not only was he a great football coach for the Bucs, but he is an even better person," one Tampa Bay fan wrote. "It makes me sick that it happened at this time of year to a person that is so giving and caring."

Another person wrote for God to give strength to Dungy during this difficult time.

"When things like this happen it adjusts our perspective on life," one person wrote. "What was considered major yesterday doesn't amount to more than a footnote today."

Wonder if he was into drugs. It is a big college area.
Who knows... Death due to natural causes at 18 would be suprising to me.

Your right, who knows? It could have been anything.

Couple people in the office said that he was 6'7 and may have had the desease that some tall people get that causes their heart to fail. I questioned the fact that he was so young and they said it usually does occur when you are around that age. Pretty sad whatever the cause. Lineguy hit it on the nose, Dungy is a big family man and this just sucks..

Dont know if this is legit.

From a local message board here in Tampa:
"From what my sources have told me, there was some sort of note or information that he got his g/f pregnant and she did not want to get married to him. Coming from a Very Christian family as them that is VERY devastating and not something you want to tell your dad. Hung himself from a cieling fan or something.-unconfirmed but from a good source I have."

/I'm going to stop posting stuff on this until the official report comes out on this. Cant believe everything you read on the internet. I am very curious though.

So Cal
Its spelled acromegaly, but Lincoln had Marfans syndrome...which effects the heart, lungs, spine etc., to varying degrees.

I think the girl friends story sounds suspect. "I went out for a walk, for 10 minutes and came home and he was dead." Suicide fits.

On a more pragmatic level....with this and the 7 or 8 starters who are going to play limited roles, if at all, is there anyway Indy stays in this game? Sea still hasn't wrapped up home field throughout.

Does Sea back off, and keep it close out of respect for Tony? I.e., make sure they are more than a score ahead....but then tone it down, in case they meet again?

One reporter speculated that Tony might just retire to spend time with his other 4 kids. Our prayers are with him.

Absolutely terrible news. What a horrible waste. :(

I don't want to be flippant about it...but yeah, onto the game.
How does this affect the players?...on either side??

I originally liked Seattle, because I just can't see Indi scoring much with Sorgi @ QB and they will be very much under strength on both sides of the ball.....but is it a better under now? Do Seattle get in front, pull in the reigns, and both teams get off the field and home as soon as possible?

Crazy to think Dungy might not coach again after this season.
I'd say there is going to be a lot of running in this game to just eat up the clock and get it over with.
