I'm referring to closing all betting windows when the clock says 0 minutes to post. There's usually another minute or two to load the horses. I see Churchill owned tracks are going to this and I believe NYRA is also. It will inconvenience some but in the long run it is a good thing. I've always been cynical that there has been betting going on after the race starts; I think of a stakes race last month at Keeneland. I bet Landseer who was 5-1 when the horses loaded into the gate and 9-2 when the race went off. When he ended up beating Beat Hollow the payoffs were posted: $8.20 to win. WTF?? A drop from 9-2 to 3-1 is big; much bigger than a 40-1 getting bet down to 20-1. When you win, you have to get paid correctly; if you're taking the worst of it when you cash, there's very little chance of showing a long term profit. I know many of us will get shut out from time to time but I believe this is a good idea.

Valuist hope its warmer there than northern M.N. -1 tonight.Agree with you somewhat but won't the incoming internet bets still lower the odds after post?I guess what really get's me is having to bet two mins. before post at my offshore a very good one oly.If the books and offshores get it two mins. before is that not time enough for post time payoffs?:shrug:

The Internet bets may lower it a bit but I have to believe that's a fairly small amount of total money wagered. I know an OTB manager down here and most of the $$ is coming from out of state simulcast facilities.

I may be in the minority on this issue, but I think closing the windows early accomplishes nothing in terms of protecting the innocent bettor. What we need is real time protection against betting after the gates have opened or in the worst case, as we have just witnessed, betting after completion of the race!
Imagine the scenario in which you have picked out a nice stalker or closer in a race that has two early speed types you are sure will burn each other out. You place a nice wager on that horse only to see one of the speedballs gets scratched a couple of minutes before post-time. Under the new rules, you will be stuck with your bet. You won't be able to cancel or change your ticket once the window is closed. Furthermore, this kind of hanky-panky could flourish under this new system.

Actually I was a victim of something similar to that in a Churchill race a couple weeks ago. It was the opening leg of a Pic 3 and I was going to use 2 horses (betting interests actually). There was an entry and the 1A looked almost unbeatable. I thought a 6 or 7-1 shot was being overlooked so I'd use both in the Pic 3. The entry was 4-5 when they loaded but the 1A became unruly and dumped the rider. They scratched the 1A and I ran to the window to cancel my ticket but they quickly got the last horse or two into the gate and I was stuck with a very underlaid 4 to 5 shot. Needless to say, the regular 1 horse didn't run at all and my 7-1 shot ended up running 2nd.
Back to the original point, I don't know what else they can do. I understand your point about being able to cancel late but that really doesn't happen very often. I'd be willing to accept that, at least knowing I wasn't getting cheated on my payoffs when I collect.
