So Cal
I like the UVA & WV picks but as for ND they SUCK. I wouldn't
bet on ND if they were 20+. Michigan's D is far too tough 4 that miserable O .

I agree with you on NW, WV, and Cincy...but have to agree with tulah on ND/Mich...I live about a half hour north of the Domers...and even locals believe that this team is pathetic...UM took them 38-0 LY....lookin' for the same TY.

Also have a tough time backin' Ore St....coming that close to knockin' off LSU because your kicker can't make a PAT...normally a team after that would go through the "woulda..shoulda..coulda's".

GL Capper...always look for and respect your opinions.

I do what I do for others, not because I want to or can....but because it is the right thing to do.

Toledo plays no defense and Kansas will kill them on the ground all day. I will give you two "locks"

Stanford beats BYU by 20
Utah beats Arizona by over 25 points

another one that I like is Ohio over Pittsburgh

This is the biggest game Troy State has ever played. The game is at home and will be Troy's first nationally televised game. After beating Marshall on Saturday the Trojans will be even more fired up heading into Thursday. Momentum is definitley on TSU's side.

Troy St. +11(got it early)

I agree w' you AU. I've lived just down the road for years and have watched this school improve year after year. I believe the return 14 starters including the Sr. QB, Arron Leak. coach blakeney has really built this program up over the past several years. last year they played an increadiblely tuff sceadule (7-4)which makes this years team better and more experienced. Coming off the upset win over Marshall away, I look for the team to preform well at the home opener and being there first game on National TV. Also, feel that they have more depth this year, which in years past has kept them from playing with the larger schools into the 4th qtr. Shouldn't be a problem this year. I look for Tryo State to have a good chance for the upset against an average Mizzu team.

Other leans
Bama -10
To keep it short, bama better than most people are giving them credit for w/ experience QB and great young talent at WR an RB. they should handle the strugling Ole miss team without many problems.

Like most plays,

Oregon State line is moving up....probably got hidden injuries from the LSU game...
This fits every criteria for a Don't Laugher
...with the exception the line is moving in the wrong direction..UP..should be moving down...

something is up on this game!

good to be back ..look for a profitable season

best regards

Steele: News and Notes
September 6, 2004

Rutgers almost shot themselves in the foot as in the 1H they had a 273-159 yard edge vs Michigan St but trailed 7-6 as they missed an amazing 3 FG?s. Rutgers took over in the 2H finishing with 415 yards offense and held on for the upset of the Big 10 foe in front of a stadium record crowd of 42,612

New Mexico had a 415-271 yard edge vs Washington St and led 17-7 in the 4Q when WSU got a 4th & 11 conversion for a FD leading to a TD. WSU then blocked a punt leading to a 4 yard TD drive and NM?s next 3 poss ended on 3 turnovers and they lost outright at home

Navy QB Aaron Polanco had 259 yards in total offense. He had a 58 yard TD pass with less than 1:00 left in the 2Q to tie it and then Navy tacked on three 2H TD?s including one with 3:16 left but finished with a 430‑265 yard edge

W Michigan QB Blayne Baggett got his first start and was in a good situation as when he stepped on the field for the first time with 3:47 left in the 1Q WM already led 14-0 thanks to a 33 yard int return for a TD and 53 yard PR for a TD. WM won 42-0

Due to four 1H turnovers, North Carolina stunningly trailed William & Mary 24-14 at the half and 31-28 late 3Q but then their offense (a unit that rolled up 575 yds) took over and NC scored 4 straight TD?s to pull out to a 49-31 lead. W&M notched a garbage TD on the final play of the game

Illinois was facing a Florida A&M team that was without four starters due to suspension, but were even more dominant than the final score of 52-13 indicates. A&M actually trailed 52-0 before scoring 2 TD?s in the 4Q, the latter with 5:13 left...San Diego St may have only beaten IAA Idaho St 38-21 but it was not as close as the score would indicate. The Aztecs led 38-0 in the 3Q before allowing 3 garbage TD?s

Colorado/Colorado St had a wild finish. CU got a 37 yard int return for a TD with 6:25 left to go ahead 27-17. CSU drove down for a TD with 4:25 left and had the ball deep in CU terr again. On 2nd down from the 1 yard line they were stuffed and then with no time-outs left Lubick shouted for CSU to spike the ball and set up for a play but QB Holland could not hear and called for a sweep which was stuffed and CU escaped with a victory. Holland did throw for 403 yards for CSU

N Texas always puts a priority on SBC games and suffered a lot of attrition on offense during the month of August but they were simply overwhelmed by Texas who had a 29-4 FD and 673-130 yard edges with Patrick Cobbs being held to -1 yard on 8 carries.

REBUILDING OR RELOADING?

Boise St appears to have reloaded once again. Despite heavy graduation losses, they extended the nation?s longest home winning streak to 19 in a 65-7 rout of Idaho with the Vandals? only TD coming on a 71 yard run with 1:20 to go in the game.

Arkansas had only 1 starter back on offense and appeared to be in a rebuilding year but amassed 548 yards vs. overmatched New Mexico St in the opener winning 63-13.

SPECIAL INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES

Ball St punter Reggie Hodges put an amazing 5 punts inside the 6 yard line and 6 inside the 20 keeping Boston College in poor field position throughout the game and BC only won 19-11 in the Thursday Night game despite getting a 96 yard KR for a TD by Will Blackmon.

UConn QB Dan Orlovsky had a tremendous 3Q vs Murray St. MSU had the advantage of a game under their belt which was a 56-3 win over Glenville St in August. Conn could have trailed at the half but luckily blocked a MSU 47 yard FG and it was 14-14 when the 3Q started. Orlovsky hit 53, 31, 80 and 58 yard TD passes, the latter on the last play of the 3Q which was his last play of the game and Conn romped 52-14.

WR Todd Watkins of BYU is 6-3 185 with 4.28 speed and was named 1st Tm MWC despite not having played a down of Div IA college football. Watkins did not disappoint in his debut with 5 rec?s for 115 yards helping BYU jump out to a 20-3 lead over Notre Dame and the Cougars held on for the win...Oklahoma St?s Vernand Morency, who was taking over for Tatum Bell rushed for 261 yards and last year rushed for 269 vs. Kansas and 227 vs. Baylor.

USC RB Reggie Bush rushed for just 27 yards but had 127 yards and 3 TD?s receiving vs VT.

Replacing Minnesota?s QB Asad Abdul-Khaliq this year is Brian Cupito. He is a solid pocket passer that hit 10 of 12 for 279 yards in his first start. It helps that Minny is able to dominate the line with their outstanding O-line mauling Toledo?s inexperienced D-line. The Gophers rolled up 704 total yards, the second most in school history (previous high 742 in 1982 vs Ohio). Making it even more dominating, UM led 63-7 before UT got a pair of garbage TD?s the latter with 1:37 left.

Joe Dailey, known more as a running QB, hit 15 of 30 passes for 218 yards in Nebraska?s brand-new offense. Coach Callahan said ?He managed the system very well and I?ll tell you, there aren?t many QB?s in the NFL who could have handled what he handled tonight mentally.? NU rolled up 581 yards and 30 FD?s, but keep in mind it was vs a IAA team in W Illinois.

W Virginia?s Kay Jay Harris rushed for 337 yards breaking the school record of 291 (Kerry Marbury 1971) and beating the Big East record which was set by Miami?s Edgerrin James in 1998 (299 yds).

INJURIES AND SUSPENSIONS OF NOTE - Kent St was playing without Joshua Cribbs at QB and as expected their offense struggled vs Iowa, who has our #9 rated defense. The Hawkeyes held Kent to 110 total yards including -13 rushing and KSU?s only score was on a 100 yard int return for a TD or Iowa could have been up 30-0 but led just 23-7. Iowa ironically got the frontdoor cover with a 30-yard int return of their own with 6:08 left in the game.

UCLA?s defensive front 7 was hit hard by injuries during the month of August and a big, powerful Oklahoma St offensive front took advantage and RB Morency had a big game (see SPECIAL INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES). OSU powered to 426 yards rushing while passing just 8 times.

Marshall suspended 3 DL and an LB prior to the Troy St game but it wasn?t the defenses fault that they came up short at home 17-15. Troy managed just 15 FD?s and 251 yards but Marshall?s offense had just 11 FD?s and 177 yards.

While it is not an injury or a suspension, George O?Leary unfortunately missed UCF?s opener vs Wisconsin attending his mother?s funeral in New York. UW finished with 23-11 FD and 400-230 yard edges...Northwestern was playing without star DL Loren Howard as well as LB Pickens and CB Cole on defense. TCU rolled up 525 yards but NU?s offense almost overcame those injuries with 637 yards but they came up short in OT, 48-45 on a missed FG.

Unannounced until an hour prior to KO, Michigan?s projected starting QB Matt Gutierrez was relegated to holding on kicks because of a sore arm. Taking his place was Chad Henne (PS#1) who had a fine August of practices but is a true frosh. UM got off to a slow start in the game and had just 274 yards offense but their defense did the trick causing 7 turnovers. Henne improved as the game went on and hit 14 of 24 for 142 yards and will likely be UM?s QB for the next 3 or 4 years.

San Jose St already has among the fewest returning starters in the country but held 6 players out of uniform including starting safeties Brian Nunez and Katrell Collier due to question marks about their academics. Beau Pierce was expected to be the veteran QB but Cal Poly transfer Dale Rogers and rFr Adam Tafralis spilt the QB duties in the Spartans 43-3 loss.

As expected, N Illinois Josh Haldi was not 100% and since conf games are more valuable to NI this year than non-conf games, he got in just 1 pass attempt before getting rested. Phil Horvath had a solid first game hitting 19 of 36 for 219 yards. It was Maryland?s ineptness on offense that cost them as QB Joel Statham turned the ball over 3 times including 2 fumbles on the first 3 series. MD still jumped out to a 17-2 lead but only prevailed 23-20.

POINTS LEFT OFF THE BOARD - S Carolina and Vanderbilt left a lot of points off the board in their game. Three times in the 1H SC drove deep in Vandy territory but settled for 3 short FG?s, two of which they missed including 30 & 37 kicks. With the score 24-6 midway through the 3Q Vandy drove 80 yards in 10 plays but fumbled into the end zone going in for a TD. SC returned the favor driving 67 yards in 12 plays but like Vandy fumbled into the EZ. Instead of 2 TDs it was 2 TB?s. Later Vandy was intercepted in the EZ with 1:46 left. SC had 453 yards.

POOR CALL EQUALS HALFTIME TURNAROUND

Late in the 1Q Tulane?s QB Lester Ricard was hit from behind as he started to pass causing a fumble, which Miss St returned for a TD. The best-case scenario for MSU should have been a defensive TD. Worst-case scenario should have been an incomplete pass. Amazingly the call was an inadvertent whistle and a do-over and Tulane would get a FD on defensive holding but they were int?d in the endzone. MSU knew they had been robbed and came out fired up and new HC Sylvester Croom harped on his players to atone for the injustice and the Bulldogs dominated the 2H in a 28-7 win.

RARE SHUTOUTS

Iowa St recorded its first shutout since 2001 blanking N Iowa 23-0. QB Brett Meyer (PS#69) and RB Stevie Hicks (PS#35) both were solid as ISU rolled up a 378-99 yard edge. It was the first time they?d held a foe below 100 yards since 1980!

FRONT DOOR COVERS

Cincinnati trailed just 10-6 with 6:16 left in the 3Q but OSU drove 57 yards for a TD late 3Q. The Buckeyes led 17-6 with 11:43 left and drove 85 yards in 11 plays for a TD with 5:54 left and after UC was SOD added a 23 yard FG with 1:51 left. The Bucks had 220 yards rushing and 242 passing while UC had just 238 total yards.

Almost a front door cover, the spread hung in the balance at the end of the Missouri game. MO had jumped to a 21-0 lead and led 35-17 at the half and 49-20 after 3Q?s laying 32? points. At the end of the game, MO got to the Ark St 1 yard line but on 4th down, with 19 ticks left opted for a 17 yard FG and a 32-point non-covering win.

Master capper I'm with you all the way on

USU -10 I'm going to hit it hard. This will be the first game for the Aggies on their new sprintturf they got this last summer and this team does have speed at the WRs and we all know how much they like to throw.

Good luck!!

Mizzou at Troy State

I have been thinking alot about this game and have drifted back and forth between playing Troy or playing the under. At this point I think I am going to eliminate playing Troy and the points for two reasons: 1) While I know their defense will play fairly well I cannot trust their offense to generate many points without turnovers. We all know that Mizzou's secondary is brutal and young but does Troy State have the weapons to do some damage through the air? 2) This game is starting to remind me of a Thursday night game from last year that was played about this same time of the year and that game was Nebraska @ Southern Miss. A large majority of folks were all over Southern Miss and the points in this game as everyone was hyped about Southern Miss's defense after they had stopped the high powered Memphis offense cold in their tracks. Also, everyone was pointing to SMISS home field advantage and once the game started it was over before halftime as Nebraska pounded them in the first half. Thus I am going to pass this game as the total has dropped too far for me to consider playing the under and instead I am going to focus on the pro game tonight.

IOWA

Quarterback Drew Tate (dizziness) and running backs Jermelle Lewis(suspension) and Marques Simmons (suspension) are probable for Saturday's gameagainst Iowa State. Wide receiver Warren Holloway (hamstring) and offensivelinemen David Walker (Achilles) are questionable. Backup quarterback JasonManson (foot) is sidelined indefinitely. Running back Marcus Schnoor (knee) isexpected to miss the remainder of the season.

Just wanted to give you some better information that what was provided to you. Drew Tate had cramps at half time of the Kent State game. He had no dizziness. He is ready and will start. Simmons and Lewis missed Kent State for a one game suspension and Lewis will start against ISU. He is an awesome TB. He will be sharing time with Young (who had an awesome game after Schnoor went down). Schnoor is out for the season but there is plenty of talent at TB. Manson is the 3rd/4th string QB, so no biggie. McCollom is the backup QB and played a good 2nd half vs Kent State. Walker missed Kent State and I think I heard he has a chance of playing this weekend. Holloway is fine and listed as the starter.

Bad night last night, have to question FSU's play calling late in the game when they had the lead and yikes Oregon State's Anderson the QB at Oreg State showed again that last years stats of leading the country in interceptions was not a fluke.
