another quick take MEMPHIS-17 over Ark State...Ark State really took a ass beating with Tulsa..Memphis has Joe L. Dunn , the former Miss. State defense coordinator...i don't see Ark St. scoring many points..if any at all...i'll run some numbers

Rufan,

Can't help but take notice of Toledo two impressive wins in a row, although Cuse has really owned the MAC. I am going to hold off and see which way the line goes on this one.

STSTRL,

Love the WMU play and Ole Miss, hit WMU last night will probably get on UNC today. I liked Minny but damn everyone is on them, sort of scares me.

JoeDe

I think Toledo put a dent in quite a few folks pockets last week, do you think Memphis can score enough to cover the 17? Rutgers has been absolutely brutal coming off a bye.

Bason,

Got to agree that Terps win this one in a rout, my only ? is if they lay off the second half to avoid injuries.

Supbear,

I like the UC call, as far as Pitt what mental state will they be in after getting ambushed in the Glass City? Vols may be ripe here!

Texas A&M/Virg Tech played in 20-40 mph winds and heavy rain due to Hurricane Isabel. A&M actually had a 216-109 yd edge on VT at the half and only trailed 21-19 mid-4Q. VT got the cover when they drove 80 yds for a TD with 8:20 left and after A&M fmbl'd the KO VT got ahead of the spread with a 33 yd, 6 play drive for a TD with 5:33 left...

Turnovers were the key to UNLV's win over Hawaii. At the half UH had a 275-131 yd edge but due to three turnovers UNLV led 24-14. The teams amazingly combined for 55 points after 3Q's with the total at 63 but the 4Q went scoreless and the game went Under..

Not since November 11th, 1939 had four major powers (Michigan, ND, Florida and Alabama) all lost on the same day. It was an upset Saturday with 3 Top 10 teams falling...

For the third straight week we went against Arizona with a big play and the Cats were once again dominated on both sides of the ball. We had a 4H Key Selection on Purdue and they had a 283-58 yd edge at the half and rolled to a 59-7 win with Arizona's only TD set up by an int...

There have been some pretty impressive RB's at Syracuse including Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little and Larry Csonka but Walter Reyes' 241 yards versus UCF were the second most ever at SU...

At the half against Boston College, Miami (FL) only had a 112-90 yd edge but led 24-0 using a 92 yd PR and 65 yd int ret for TD's and also had a 29 yd drive for a TD after they tackled the punter..

.Duke was trying for their 3rd straight win for the first time since 1994 but Northwestern, after yielding 515 yds to Miami (OH), held Duke to 151 yds through 3Q's. NU also had their opening 2 drives go 76 and 55 yds for TD's and finished with a 463-298 yd edge...

Missouri had their first National ranking in nearly 5 years at #23 and their defense, after 3 games, allowed just 7.3 ppg but they would yield 483 yds to Middle Tennessee and needed the Blue Raiders to miss an xp in OT to pull out a 41-40 win...

Navy had a 372-32 rushing edge vs E Michigan and won consecutive home games for the first time since 1997 with a 39-7 victory...

Jackie Sherrill is now the coach on the hottest seat in college football. His Mississippi St team started out the season 0-3, their worst start since 1968 when their team stumbled to an 0-8-2 finish. They have two straight losses to CUSA teams as favorites and trailed Houston 28-0 in the 2Q with their comeback bid falling short, 42-35...

Demetris Summers scored three touchdowns for South Carolina. (AP)
S Carolina appeared to be in a flat spot off their big loss to Georgia with another key SEC game on deck, but true frosh RB Demetris Summers (PS#1) had 161 yds. Dondrail Pinkins, who almost lost his starting job, had a decent game hitting 13 of 19 for 202 yds and SC had a 290-87 yd edge in the 1H and held UAB's top-notch QB Darrell Hackney to 30 yds passing in that stanza...

Rick Minter of Cincinnati set a school record with his 51st career win topping Sid Gillman and Gino Guidugli becoming UC's all-time leader in total offense with 6,799 yards. The Bearcats trailed Temple 24-10 in the 4Q but rebounded to force OT. Temple missed 3 FG's in the OT periods and UC, after having a FG blk'd and one bounce off the upright, got a TD run for a 30-24 win...

E Carolina continues to improve weekly but TO's continue to doom them. This past week they had a 5-1 TO deficit to WF and while they covered (+19') losing only 34-16 and had a 391-324 yd edge, WF scored two TD's in a span of 1:33 in the 3Q off of TO's to blow it open...

Arkansas RB Cedric Cobbs became the first Hog back since 1975 to open the season with 3 straight 100 yard games. Arkansas had just 326 yds offense but got the cover thanks to 3 TO's in the 2Q which set them up for 17 points. It was 7-7 late in the 2Q when Arkansas got a 31 yd FG after an int was returned to the 17 and got TD drives of 26 and 28 yds after NT fmbl'd and then fmbl'd the ensuing KO.

SITUATIONAL HANDICAPPING - Michigan was off their impressive performance against Notre Dame and had everyone in the country telling them how great they were. They had to travel across the USA and play in one of the loudest stadiums in the country in Auzten and 59,023 (the largest crowd ever) was on hand. Oregon was pumped up as an underdog. Early on, UO drove 64 yds in 16 plays but settled for a FG which Michigan blocked and ret'd for a TD and stunningly, despite being outplayed, led 6-0. UO scored 24 straight points on some big plays including a 61 yd PR for a TD, a blocked punt that UO took over a TD and held on for the 31-27 upset. Amazingly Michigan ran Chris Perry just 11 times for 26 yds while passing a very un-Michigan-like 55 times...

Georgia Tech played well beyond its talent level vs both Auburn and Florida St the past two weeks taking the two major powers to the wire with one upset and one close loss. Without the emotional edge of being an underdog last week, and with Clemson wearing purple uniforms for the first time since 1992, GT was waxed 39-3 by Clemson...

Washington St was off huge efforts vs both Notre Dame and Colorado on the road and had a big Pac 10 opener vs Oregon on deck. Despite 27-12 FD and 433-257 yd edges, Drew Dunning set a school record with 5 FG's and the Cougars did not cover vs New Mexico, 23-13.

DE?JA VU ALL OVER AGAIN - Michigan St beat the Irish for the 4th straight time in S Bend. The Irish, after starting 8-0 under Ty Willingham, are now 3-5 over his past 8 games and have scored just 3 offensive TD's, with one of them coming on an 85 yd drive for a TD led by backup QB Brady Quinn (PS#12) with 2:29 left when trailing MSU 22-9 last week...

Two weeks ago Washington only led Indiana 13-10 in the 3Q but under new HC Keith Gilbertson they pulled away and not only won but covered vs Indiana. This past week they only led Idaho 17-14 early 3Q but scored the game's last 4 TD's and once again covered as a home favorite making Gilbertson 2-0 in that role, a huge improvement over his predecessor, Rick Neuheisel. Idaho actually got the ball at midfield on an int and punted and UW went 50, 47 and 76 yds for TD's. Idaho was int'd at the UW 20 with 9:42 left and the Huskies went on an 80 yd, 15 play drive for a TD with 2:42 left to get the cover...

Colorado gave backup QB Erik Greenberg his first start of the year and surprisingly moved the ball well early missing 22 and 42 yd FG's and also had an 81 yd TD pass which was the bulk of their offense for the day. FSU dominated the final 3Q's of the game and finished with 551-275 yd and 26-13 FD edges. The score could have been worse but they settled for FG's of 20, 26, 27 and 29 yds and were also SOD at the 37 but still rolled to a 47-7 win...

Last year Maryland got off to a slow start losing their opener and getting pummeled by Florida St. They rebounded to win their last 10 games, most in impressive fashion. This year they lost their opener and got pounded by Florida St. Last week they destroyed W Virg even more than the final score indicates. Maryland had 28-11 FD and 498-156 yd edges. WV had 3 FD's at the half and their only score came after recovering a fumble with 6:08 left and they drove 58 yard for a garbage TD with 4:02 left. Maryland did not punt until the 4Q...

For the tenth time in 15 games Ohio St won a game decided by a TD or less. Will Allen ended games in 2002 with int's on the final play vs both Cincinnati and Michigan and int'd Josh Harris on the final play vs Bowling Green to hold on to the 24-17 lead. In another deja vu part of the game the Buckeyes, for the 2nd consecutive week led 24-7 but this time yielded a TD, onside kick recovery and 33 yd FG in the final 3:25. The Buckeyes did rush for 205 yds, by far their best ground production of the season.

RECORD BREAKING DAYS - Oklahoma's Antonio Perkins had 3 PR TD's to break two NCAA records. His overall PR yards of 277 set a record as did the 3 TD's. The old PR mark for yards in a game was just 219 and was set back in 1971 so his should stand for quite some time...

Oklahoma St WR Rashaun Woods set an NCAA record with 7 TD catches and had career highs of 13 rec's and 232 yds vs overmatched SMU. He broke the 34 year record for TD rec's which was six set by Tim Delaney of San Diego St back in 1969. Interesting, despite having 52 points, OSU had just 15 FD's and in the 1H had scoring drives of 3 (after int), 23 (after blk'd punt), 24, 35, 32 and their longest drive was 52 yds.

ok i'm ready to do battle now; got my numbers and here are the best plays on the board with value;
Minnisota
Texas tech
lsu
norte dame....i show dead even matchup
Cincy
Air Force...getting points and being the best team
Arkansas....Alabama got's some serious problems
Oregon
Arizona State...tank on us last week ..but still the better team
Wisconsin......illiniwill not win this week again the better team
RUTGERS....rates in my stats as one of my TOP PLAYs
Texas.... as going to ride this team until the have competition
Wyoming....i played this over the weekend..because Beeno Cook
recommended...getting 24 points is way too many for Boise State to cover
San Diego State...forget last year...this is a dead even matchup and getting a ton of points
Toledo...showsw up as a winner because they beat PITT ..damnit
but as you said this is a let down week for them..all energy went into last week...numbers do lie sometimes and this is the one
Memphis +17...don't let that scare you ...Ark State is BAD to The Bone..Memphis is a well coached team...and defense against this weak foe will should score into high 30's or more.

I'll post the best bet of the week from the above latter.

Ar182,

Yes the QB is out for Southern Miss but the backup saw alot of playing time last year, but he is a brutal passer. By the way is the 182 a reference to the Movie Turk182? If so it was a excellent flick, but then again it could be a reference to Blink182.

Joede,

Gophers sure look like the team right now, last year their QB burnt me a few games when they started Big 10 play but I will give him another chance.

Texas Tech, not sure about this game, still thinking.

ND, this game is usually a tight matchup, lean ND.

Cinc, great matchup of two good qb's, doubt if it will be on tv, but I think the Cats can hang inside the number.

Force, this game has been very low scoring the past few years, would have to look at the Force with BYU's QB problems,

Arkie, what the hell has happened to the Bama program?

Oreg, tough place to play at for WSU but they have allready played two tough road games ND COL, still thinking.

ASU, damn their offense was pathetic last week, or is Iowa's defense that good

Rutgers, even though they have traditionally struggled coming off a bye, I think they handle Navy. New attitude at the University of New Jersey this year, they have had two decent recrutimg yrs and dividends are begining to show.

Texas, Horns need to bury teams to make up for the embarassing loss to Arkie, Mack is starting to remind me of John Cooper, great recruiter and piss poor in big games.

Wyo, I like their QB he may be the best QB in the MWC.

San Diego State, with the anemic offense of the Bruins you would have to give this game some thought.

Toledo, don't like them this week, they may win outright but I think Cuse at home gets the job done. They beat CFU last week and CFU may be a better all around team than Toledo.

Memphis, hey I am going to follow you on this one, don't know much about Memphis or Ark St, just seems like everytime I have played Memphis they never score.

MIGHTY MAC HAS ITS BEST WEEK EVER - The MAC had, by far, its greatest week ever this past week. Marshall, with a backup QB, travelled to face K-State having never beaten a ranked major college opponent. K-State had a 41 game non-conf winning streak. Both teams had backup QB's but MU held off a late K-State drive which ended on the MU 6 and got the 27-20 upset on the road...

N Illinois upset its second ranked team of the season and this time won at Alabama. Special teams helped NI as they blk'd an xp and returned it for 2 early and also nailed a 51 yd FG. NI trailed 9-5 at the half but would get a 40 yd drive for a TD to lead after 3Q's and then a 91 yd drive was capped with a 47 yd TD pass with 7:28 left. Bama got a 54 yd TD run on 4th & 1 and got the ball back but their 4th & 11 pass fell incompelte...

Nothing fluky about Miami (OH)'s domination of Colorado St. They had a 27-14 FD edge and led for the majority of the game. UM piled up 206 yds rushing and 330 passing and the bulk of CSU's yds came on 86 and 68 yd TD passes. UM finished the game at the CSU 6 yd line taking a knee in a 41-21 win...

Pittsburgh appeared on their way to a solid win over Toledo leading 31-21 but in the 4Q were int'd at the 17 and 2 yd lines. After the latter int, Toledo went 98 yds in 12 plays for a TD with 6:45 left and then with momentum, forced a punt and drove 83 yds in 15 plays for a TD with :43 left to not only cover, but pull off the upset win knocking off the #11 ranked Panthers.

INJURIES OF NOTE - A key play in the Penn St/Kent St game happened on the 2nd play when Josh Cribbs went out with injury. Cribbs, by far, the key weapon of the KSU offense and his backups Polk and Smith combined to hit 9 of 23 for 105 yds. KSU rec'd a fumbled punt in the EZ for a TD and actually led 10-0 early but PSU dominated the game with Cribbs out and had 410-184 yd and 26-11 FD edges. PSU missed a couple of scoring opportunities, fumbling at the 19 and settling for two 38 yd FG's and could not get the cover...

BYU was without their starting QB vs Stanford and the Cardinals were also using a first year starter in Trent Edwards who had a very good opening game vs San Jose St. With two young QB's, you would expect a low scoring game and SU's 18-14 win showed that. Surprisingly BYU's Beck, in his first start, hit 22 of 45 for 279 yds while Edwards hit just 10 of 23 for 25 yds. Edwards became the first frosh QB at SU to win his starting debut since 1991 despite the poor stats and BYU was at the SU 9 in the final minute but were SOD...

TCU was missing starting QB Tye Gunn as well as #2 RB Ricky Madison due to injury. Lonta Hobbs, their #1 rusher, then was injured in the 1Q so it was 3rd string frosh Robert Merrill who rushed for 119 yds. First time starting QB Brandon Hassell, who had never thrown a pass in a game, had 3 fumbles and an int in the 1Q but finished 15 of 30 for 227 yds. His 17 yd TD pass with 4:31 left gave TCU the cover. Hobbs was on crutches at the end of the game for TCU.

LONG WEEK, LONG TIME - Normally Rice would have had a shot vs Texas but last week they took on a Texas team that had faced option attacks in each of the first two games of the season and UT was coming off a stunning loss to Arkansas. Longhorns players took a vow of silence to prepare for the game and simply dominated with 25-11 FD and 515-192 yd edges. Rice's only TD came in the 4Q with the game out of reach, 48-0.

IAA NOTES - Our Power Ratings had IAA Northwestern St favored over ULM but they were fortunate to beat the Indians. They got a fumble recovery at the ULM 33 late and a TD pass with :03 left to pull out a 14-10 win. ULM QB Steven Jyles did not start as he had a ruptured tendon in his throwing hand but after backup QB Daniel DaPrato was int'd twice, Jyles played and hit just 11 of 22 for 100 yards. NWSt QB Davon Vinson is a Baylor transfer...

Hal Mumme is now the Head Coach at SE Louisiana but his team was overmatched by Troy St and Mumme (known for his potent offenses) was shutout 28-0. TSU played in their newly expanded stadium (to 30,000), finally having a solid QB in Aaron Leak (PS#29) who threw for 237 yards...

San Diego St?s frosh Lynell Hamilton (PS#21) rushed for 220 yds vs IAA Samford. The Aztecs only led 24-17 in the 3Q but Hamilton joined Marshall Faulk as the only Aztec frosh to top 200 yards rushing in a game. Samford broke SDSt streak of 9 consecutive quarters without allowing a TD (including Ohio St game) with a TD pass in the 2Q. SDSt finished with 27-14 FD and 528-244 yd edges.

MISLEADING FINALS AND BACKDOOR COVERS - While the big story of the Nevada/San Jose St game was the tremendous return of RB Neil Parry who played with a prosthetic right leg, the game was a misleading final. NU led 26-3 and had the ball at the SJS 9 but had an int ret'd 100 yds for a TD and only led 26-10 at the half despite dominating. They led 32-10 but gave up a 98 yd KR for a TD and then SJS would get 2 more TD's and actually pulled within 35-30 with 12:49 left before NU put it away and the Wolfpack finished with a 563-242 yd edge...

For the third time in 4 games Illinois outgained an opponent and lost. Illinois had a 496-360 yd edge. Two key plays happened in the game trailing 14-7 Illinois allowed a 68 yd PR for a TD with :23 left in the half to give Cal a 21-7 lead. After getting a TD early 3Q to pull again within 7 the Illini had the ball back at midfield and were int'd and ret'd for a TD, 28-14. Having pulled within 7, UI drove and had a FD at the Cal 7 but were short of time-outs and a 2nd & 10 pass resulted in a sack and they ran out of time ruining their chance to go to OT..

N Carolina took the opening KO 97 yds for a TD against Wisconsin but then was generally outplayed in the game despite the Badgers missing their top rusher, Anthony Davis, and then having backup Dwayne Smith go down with a pulled groin muscle. Third string Booker Stanley rushed for 119 yds. UW led 38-20 and were ahead of the spread when NC took over with 1:30 left. They had a 99 yd KR called back but would drive 74 yds in 7 plays and got a TD on the final play of the game for the backdoor cover. UW was also int'd in the EZ from the 6 yd line with :44 left in the half...

Indiana had a 20-15 FD edge vs Kentucky and 449-354 yd edge. In the 1H Indy drove deep but settled for a 21 yd FG and they had a 59 yd TD run on a reverse called back for holding and then missed the ensuing FG. Just before the half UK got a free play when Indy jumped offsides and Lorenzen threw a jump ball that went for a 51 yd TD and the Cats led 13-10. In the 2H Indy was SOD at the UK 28 and int'd in the EZ and they ended the game on the UK 15 yd line. One of UK's TD's came after rec'ing an onside kick and they drove 40 yds so the Hoosiers were more competitive than the final indicates...

While NC State did lead comfortably vs Texas Tech for most of the game, they used some big plays and on the day Tech amounted 681 yds offense including a school record 586 by QB BJ Symons. NCSt got a 71 yd int return for a TD and blocked a punt for a TD. In the 1H Tech drove to the NCSt 22, 8, 20 and 25 but came away empty each time. They were SOD twice, stopped on a fake FG and missed a 42 yd FG but Tech did gain 375 yds in the 2H when down big...

Oklahoma and UCLA put up 83 combined points. The game had just 33 FD's and OU had 354 yds to UCLA's 271, hardly indicative of a high scoring game. Three PR TD's, a 34 yd int return for a TD and 91 yd KO return for a TD all helped matters as did TO's which set up short scores...

Minnesota dominated Louisiana-Lft leading 31-0 in the 2Q before ULL could even cross midfield. The Gophers led 48-7 but allowed a TD with 2:59 left to give ULL the backdoor cover by 1 point, 48-14 (+35). ULL QB Jerry Babb who had hit 5 of 22 in the rain vs Houston, hit just 3 of 9 for 13 yds and was replaced by Eric Rekieta in the 3Q.
