Pat Riley had his team at Quicken Loans Arena for nearly three hours Friday. None of that time involved contact work.
Instead, practice ended with Shaquille O'Neal and Jason Williams wearing ice packs on their knees and James Posey icing down his right ankle.
Of the three starters, the biggest question mark going into today's game against the Cavaliers is O'Neal. After missing Wednesday's victory at Toronto with what the team lists as a hyper-extended left knee, the center said he would not make a decision on his status until this morning.
"Still got a little fluid in there, as you can see," he said, pinching a puffy section toward the outside of the joint. "So as long as the fluid goes down and it gets better, then I'll get back."
O'Neal said he missed time two seasons ago with the Lakers with a similar ailment but could not recall how long he was out. He is not listed as missing time due to a knee injury in 2003-04, but did miss three games in 2002-03 with a sore left knee.
The Heat said there is not enough fluid on the knee to require it to be drained.
"I'm going to take some more medicine today and then see how it feels," he said. "I'll be all right."
He is uncertain whether he was injured on a specific play.
"I just know once I woke up [Wednesday] morning it was swollen," O'Neal said.
Posey said he "tweaked" his ankle during Friday's session on the Cavaliers' practice court. Like Williams, who has recurring tendinitis, Posey expects to play today.
Having given his team five of the previous 11 days off, Riley said it was essential to get the players on the court. His compromise was to follow a video review with a full-speed session that did not have contact drills.
As for O'Neal's status against the Cavs, and Sunday against the Nets, Riley said, "It's still a little tender. He'll know. When he tells me he's ready, we'll know."
