Jeff Neubauer has capitalized on West Virginia's surprising run in the NCAA Tournament.

Neubauer, the top assistant at West Virginia the last three seasons, was named coach at Eastern Kentucky on Monday.

Neubauer replaces Travis Ford, who took the job at Massachusetts last month. Under Ford, the Colonels went 22-9 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 26 years this past season. "Coach Neubauer is an incredibly bright and impressive young coach," Eastern Kentucky president Joanne Glasser said. "When the position became open, we were immediately flooded with inquiries from the coaching community - head coaches and assistants expressing a strong desire to lead our program. But when it came time to make a decision, Jeff Neubauer stood head and shoulders above the rest."

Serving under John Beilein at West Virginia, the 34-year-old Neubauer was part of a team that reached the Elite Eight this past season.

"As a young coach, you dream of taking over a Division I program in very good shape with a chance to win, and that's the case at EKU," Neubauer said. "I understand how important the game of basketball is in Kentucky, and as a coach, that's something you look for."

Neubauer will inherit an experienced team as the Colonels return four starters from last season's squad.
