do't look now, but it appears that the pirates are done for the year. they last won (twice) the last week of January. since then, they've lost 6 in a row. they're 2-11 on the road, 2-12 in the aac, the two wins being those mentioned above. leading scorer bj tyson (14.6 ppg) has scored 23 total points in the last 3 games. but more telling is ecu's defensive stats over those 6 games. the fg% of those 6 opponents: 53.6, 47.4, 48.3, 47.2, 55.6, 52.1; 3pt%: 42.1, 40.0, 29.6, 38.7, 36.8, 44.0. their opponents averaged 83.3 ppg over that stretch. kinda shocking, isn't it?
in fairness, coach lebo's team has been diluted by injuries, 4 guys are trying to carry all the load, and you can see the effort level going downhill. this is the 2nd game of this southern road trip, the first being last sunday in dallas where the pirates played smu tough for about 15 minutes and then quietly faded away. now the team has been on the road for 5 days. hard to see a imminent major effort in the cards for them.
Tulane is hardly gangbusters. they have won 2 of the last 3, including 2 triple ot wins, 1 being in Greenville 2 weeks ago. this is their 3rd straight home game, and they've been off for a week, so rest and preparation shouldn't be an issue. the line opened @ -4, and while the early diners took the green wave, the line kinda did a funky backtrack to -3-. I'm ignoring that and playing the situation - Tulane -3- to send the pirates back to own beds.
