my check engine light was coming on intermittently...it would go off(usually when i opened and re-closed the gas cap and come on again periodically)....

i bought a new gas cap and the problem seems to have been resolved...my question is,should i unhook the battery cables and drain the power from the car to reset the computer(going for my emissions test within the next month or so)or will the computer reset itself now that the problem is solved?........

not sure whether the car`s computer resets itself and shows no issues when they plug the diagnostic tester into the car at the emissions station.......

thanks for the help.....

GW, the computer will reset itself. If you unplug the battery then you need to make sure you drive at least 100 miles so it has a chance to run thru all of it's diagnostics. Otherwise when you go in for your inspection it will tell the computer it's not complete and you'll have to come back. I would just keep driving and also keep your receipt for your gas cap so if they do say something you can show that it was just replaced.

They do test the gas cap itself though so it shouldn't matter, they'll know it's good.

thank you,my brother...that`s exactly what i was looking for....i wasn`t sure whether the emissions duder(or mechanic who would do the diagnostic and then fix the issue had to do some sort of system reset after the issue was resolved).....the cap seems to have resolved the "check engine" light issue but wasn`t sure whether the issue would still show up on the diagnostic the em. station would do....i don`t know what those auto computers store and whether i needed to perform something like killing power to the computer to erase the log.....

much appreciated... :0074

would love to....but i`ve given up even broaching the subject ....
