In the shadows
It is such a painful loss, very sorry to hear about your buddy Lawrence.

I have had some dogs that had tragic endings that still haunt me.

RAINBOW BRIDGE

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks for the thoughts...

I still can't process it and can't cry anymore. I'm numb.

Paxton died of acute heart failure. I got back in town late last night and he looked like he had fluid in his abdomen. My wife called me about 1:00 pm very worried. By the time I got home his paws were swollen to the size of his legs.

I called the vet and she said get here now...dogs don't get peripheral edema unless they are dieing of heart failure.

When she saw him her words were "oh no"...
They ultrasound his belly and came and told us he was critically ill. His temp should b about 100 or 101... His was 96, in essence he was trying to die...

Well I lost it and didn't hear much after that..

They gave him a tranquiler and let us see him. I hugged him and kissed and told him I loved him and he is going home in a few minutes. He tried to stand up, but I held him down. He wagged his tail as I scratched behind his ear and then he laid his head back on his paws. I grabbed my phone and took one last shot...

They took him away and I don't know how long I cried, but the doc came in and it was done. He was home and not suffering.

Thanks for the well wishes...

I'm hardly getting through the day. I had to work w my boss the last 2 days and I guess that's good because I was out the house

We buried Paxton under an apple tree in the back of the house. Now, I don't know if that was a good idea. Every time I look back there I get emotional

But I didn't want him cremated with a bunch of other dogs. I'm going to order a marker for him.

I know Time eases pain but I miss my buddy :sadwave: :sadwave:

Selfish of me to say No because it will tear them to pieces when it passes, especially my daughter??? I am debaiting it very hard??
Sorry for your loss and I am sure it stings like hell. Hang in there.

it is selfish to deprive children of the pure joy of having a dog. Death of animals is a fact of life. They will also lose family. Are you going to sweep that under the rug too to keep them from any pain from loss.

I was never allowed to have dogs in my youth and now I would not be without dogs in my life.

If one of my dog passes I will get a puppy the next week.

Sorry about the loss of your friend Lawrence.

Sorry dude. It is a tough time. I think you did the right thing back by the apple tree. I agree with Scott's comments wholeheartedly. Take care Lawrence.

agree with nopepper about doing the right thing w/ the apple tree. Once the pain subsides, it will be nice having him close to you guys and the 'good times' will be remembered more.
