Cowher names Maddox starter for Sunday

By Alan Robinson, Associated Press, 10/02/02

PITTSBURGH -- Coach Bill Cowher made a surprise move Wednesday, benching quarterback Kordell Stewart so former XFL star Tommy Maddox can start Sunday for the Pittsburgh Steelers against New Orleans.

The switch came with the Steelers off to a disappointing 1-2 start, scoring only 36 points in three games with Stewart at quarterback.

Maddox, who hasn't started an NFL game in 10 years, came off the bench late in the fourth quarter Sunday to rally the Steelers to a 16-13 overtime win over Cleveland, completing 11 of 13 passes for 122 yards and a game-tying touchdown.

Stewart clearly was upset with the benching, his third in six seasons since becoming the Steelers starting quarterback in 1997.

He was the Steelers most valuable player last season and finished third in the NFL MVP voting, getting more votes than any AFC player.

"Do I agree with the decision? No. But I've never said it was the Kordell Stewart show. I've always said it was the Pittsburgh Steelers show. I'll get a chance to start sometime," Stewart said.

Cowher initially said after the Browns game he anticipated Stewart would remain the starter only to change his mind. He said Tuesday he was disappointed with the Steelers play so far and that no player's job was safe.

Maddox was the Broncos' first-round draft pick in 1992 and started four games that season but hasn't started in the league since. He bounced among several teams before leaving the league in 1997 and was out of football for three years before playing for New Jersey of the Arena League in 2000.

He signed with the Steelers last year, getting no signing bonus, after being the MVP of the XFL's one and only season for league champion Los Angeles.

Looking forward to this! Maddox may be the shot in the arm Pitt needs.

At the very least, I picked up Maddox for my fantasy team after reading this. Should make a good fill-in for next week. I've got Donovan McNabb on my team, but Philly has a bye next week and Pitt gets Cinci....wooooo....Go Maddox Go! :D :D

hope you`re right

was loving pitt here(like this spot-them going on the road)...i figured kordell would come alive without the pressure of the home crowd...now,this maddox thing may ruin my play...i see maddox and danny wuerrfel as the same guy....great qb`s in these ragball league`s ,but not so hot vs the big boys...have to give him credit for last week,though...he played well....but he will be starting this week...a much different scenario....ruined a nice play...bad move by cowher starting the new guy on the road......
