Good luck on your book. I've read the initial post a few times and not really sure what you are looking for. I know you want like a top 500 compilation you are putting together.

First and foremost, i thought this was rock and roll so why the public enemy? BUT if you are going to include them, then you damn sure better include NWA. Don't want my boys coming after you.

On the other end of the spectrum, i think
Billy Joel
Elton John
Ozzy Osbourne
Grateful Dead
The Smiths
Billy Idol

more coming......good luck

10 More "Essential" Candidates
------------------------------------------------------
Badlands - self-titled
Budgie - Never Turn Your Back on a Friend
David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars
Phil Collins - Face Value
The Animals - here is where a greatest hits probably comes into
...play (a 1987 release The Best of the Animals is a beauty)
Cry of Love - Brother
The Moody Blues - A Question of Balance (maybe L.D.Voyager ... others?)
The Tragically Hip - Up to Here (my fave of theirs)
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
Tesla - Mechanical Resonance

...gee ... might be only 3 or 4 hundred more artists that could be listed, aye?

You make a good point, EZ. I'm listing everything for starters, knowing full well that much of it won't work for what I'm trying to pull off.

The Vegas odds of everything listed making my top 1000 is, well ... what kinda odds could we get for the Tigers NOT to win the World Series? ... probably couldn't get such a play (somebody contradict me if I'm wrong ... I wanna piece!)

The Vegas odds on my actually completing this project may offer a juicy payout also, but this thread should certainly help some.

I have thought about this stuff before, and did start compiling a list of my own faves. Made it to somewhere in the early 200's. That was 4 or 5 years ago. This project would have been impossible then; I shall get my money's worth from Roy rogers Cable whatever the outcome.

Cheers!:D

Went home last night and looked at my CD collection so I went back to my original post and added a few more. They are still in alphabetical order however. There is lots of great music out there. Good Luck on your book.

What's up, no REM in here? Any of their first 9 albums would do.

I think he wants Rock albums, not pansies that kept Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and White Lion off the radio

Some that are missing off the top of my head

Def Leppard - Hysteria

Seeing as most of these selections have been from the 60's and 70's, for a more 'modern' take, Radiohead's "Ok Computer" is a must have for any music lover. For a more rock themed album, "The Bends" is also excellent. Their newest album,"Hail To The Thief" (a slight dig to Dubya) is also fantastic (save for a couple of songs). More like 21st century 'rock' though.

Extrapolater,

As far as music from Phish goes, Junta is a great album. But I prefer their live albums. Hampton Comes Alive id awsome. As for other bands...

Grateful Dead: Workingmans Dead
Pink Floyd: Darkside of the Moon
Allman Brothers: Eat a Peach
The Doors: Soft Parade
Paul Simon: Tales from the Cape Man (not sure if thats the right name)
SRV: The Sky Is Crying
