The information from various sources was conflicting yesterday, but closer Scott Stewart has a problem with his left elbow - probably a bone spur - and is out until further notice. With the rosters expanded to a maximum of 40 from 25 this month, there's no need to put Stewart on the disabled list. The Expos might shut him down for the season, although Stewart was quick to say yesterday that would not be the case. The left-hander heads home to South Carolina today as wife, Melanie, gives birth to their second child, and he is expected to rejoin the team and have an MRI done on the elbow when the team is in Chicago next week. Manager Frank Robinson said the club would monitor him for two weeks.

- What You See Is What You Get: Robinson said there wouldn't be a left-hander called up to replace Stewart. The Expos, who had three lefties in their bullpen two months ago, are left with one, the astonishing Joey Eischen. The two pitchers called up yesterday are both right-handed starters, Sun-Woo Kim and Tim Drew. The only lefty available on the club's 40-man roster was Scott Downs, who is making his way back from Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery performed in March 2001. Downs went 2-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 17 games in relief with Ottawa and gave up six homers in 231/3 innings
