Stephen Nicholas Bio
By NFLDraftScout.com
April 29, 2007

Called the "heart and soul" of the defense by the coaching staff, Stephen Nicholas brought back memories of former Dolphins standout A.J. Duhe for Florida football fans, as he not only played all three linebacker positions, but was usually seen roaming the field in a variety of roles depending on the play's situation.

A high-motor type who makes tackles in bunches, Nicholas was certain to leave his imprint in the school's record books before his playing days came to an end. His 326 tackles rank second in school history, while he set USF all-time records with 20 sacks and 53.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage. He also established school records for most games started (45) and most games played in (50) during a career.

Nicholas enrolled at South Florida in 2002, spurning scholarship offers from Syracuse, Georgia and Louisville. That season, he appeared in three games, recording two solo tackles with a stop for a loss before being granted a medical hardship due to an ankle sprain. He returned to start nine contests at strongside outside linebacker, earning Freshman All-America recognition from The Sporting News.

That year, he collected 46 tackles (30 solos) with 5.5 sacks and 11 stops for loss. He was credited with seven quarterback pressures, as he caused and recovered one fumble. In 2004, Nicholas started the first six games at strongside linebacker before moving to the weak side. He registered 97 tackles (54 solos) with 11 stops behind the line of scrimmage, adding three pressures and five pass deflections.

The Big East second-team choice started all 12 games on the strong side in 2005. He finished third on the team with 79 tackles (49 solos), as he posted seven sacks and 15.5 stops for loss, the sixth-best season total in school annals. He caused a pair of fumbles and recovered another. He also broke up three passes.

In 2006, Nicholas was named All-Big East first team. He started all 13 games to rank second on the team with 102 tackles (77 solos), adding 7.5 sacks and 15 stops behind the line of scrimmage with nine pressures. He batted away seven passes, intercepted another and blocked one kick.

In 50 games at South Florida, Nicholas started 45 times. He recorded 326 tackles (212 solos) with 20 sacks for minus-137 yards, 53? stops for losses of 217 yards and 26 quarterback pressures. He caused three fumbles and recovered two others while also blocking one kick. He had 15 pass deflections and a pair of interceptions.

an astounding 50.5 tackles for loss and 18 sacks as a four-year starter at South Florida. He is a very smart player who had a third-round grade. Tabbed as the No. 1 special-teams target in the draft. Could start the season at weakside linebacker while Demorrio Williams recovers from pectoral surgery.

UGA's Martrez Milner was taken with Atlanta's second pick in the fourth round.

? Depth: The addition of cornerback David Irons in the sixth round to go with second-round pick Chris Houston, also a cornerback, shows an infusion of new blood at the position. The Falcons also signed veteran cornerback Lewis Sanders in free agency. This does not bode well for former starter Jason Webster, who has already lost his starting job to Houston.

? Short-handed: At one point, linebacker seemed like an area of strength, but with Williams injured and Nicholas thrust into the starter's role at the weakside linebacker spot, linebacker has become a position that is thin.

? More needs: Atlanta plans to bring in some veteran placekickers in the next two weeks to compete with Aaron Elling.

? Going local: The Falcons drafted their second player from Georgia in as many years with the fourth-round pick of tight end Martrez Milner, who grew up in Oakwood, just a few miles from the Falcons' facility. In the sixth round, they selected Dacula cornerback David Irons, who played collegiately at Auburn.

Falcons DT Coleman has thigh surgery
Will miss 3 to 5 months after watercraft accident

By STEVE WYCHE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 04/30/07

Falcons defensive tackle Rod Coleman will be out for three to five months after surgery Monday to repair a ruptured right quadriceps suffered this weekend in an accident while riding a personal watercraft vehicle, team vice president of communications Reggie Roberts confirmed. :nono:

In the past few days, the Falcons have lost two defensive starters to offseason injuries that required surgery. Outside linebacker Demorrio Williams underwent surgery late last week to repair torn pectoral muscles suffered while lifting weights.

Wlliams is expected to be out for up to five months and miss training camp, the preseason and possibly the first few games of the regular season. Coleman appears to be on a similar timetable.

Coleman, one of the Falcons' most disruptive pass rushers, has accumulated 28 of his 56.5 career sacks in the past three seasons. His absence could be a substantial blow to the Falcons' unsettled defensive front.

For now, Jonathan Babineaux would step in for Coleman, as he did much of last season when Coleman was hampered by a turf toe injury. Darrell Shropshire, who has worked primarily at nose tackle, has played and practiced at both tackle spots.

The Falcons are thin at nose tackle as well. Starter Grady Jackson has sued the team for allegedly divulging private medical information to the media last summer and has not taken part in offseason conditioning drills. He also skipped a three-day, voluntary mini-camp before the draft.

Shropshire and second-year players Tommy Jackson and Michael Bozeman are the top three nose tackles on the roster. The Falcons selected nose tackle Trey Lewis out of Division II Washburn in the sixth round of this past weekend's NFL draft.

The Falcons have some of the stupidest and unlucky players in the NFL.

I am beginning to wonder if there is some sort of a curse on their dumb asses.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 05/03/07

A Web site associated with a Michael Vick company, MV7, LLC, professes to be in the business of breeding pit bulls and other dogs as pets not for fighting.

VicksK9Kennels.com states that, "We do not promote, support or raise dogs for fighting and will not knowingly sell, give, or trade any dog that may be used for fighting.":SIB

The property Vick owns in Virginia where dozens of dogs were confiscated last week in a dog-fighting investigation is listed as the address for the Web site and the company, 1915 Moonlight Road, Smithfield, Va.

VicksK9Kennels.com is copyrighted to MV7, LLC, a Vick company. Lawrence H. Woodward Jr., Vick's longtime attorney, is listed as the registered agent for MV7, LLC, by the Virginia State Corporation Commission.:nono:

In New York for league functions over the weekend, Vick attempted to distance himself from the property and blamed his family members for the activities that attracted law enforcement officials.

"I'm never there. I'm never at the house," Vick said Friday in New York. "I left the house with my family members and my cousin. They just haven't been doing the right thing. The issue will get resolved.:SIB
Vick could not be reached Monday through the Falcons. Calls to Woodward's office in Virginia Beach were not returned.

Investigation in the case is ongoing, Christine Golden of the Chesapeake Police Department said Wednesday.

Falcons offer contract to kicker Cundiff
Former Cowboy also weighing offer from Giants

By D. ORLANDO LEDBETTER
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 05/04/07

Free agent place-kicker Billy Cundiff was impressive in his workout with the Falcons on Friday morning and was offered a contract, according to his agent, Paul Sheehy.

Cundiff also had a good workout with the Giants on Thursday and is weighing an offer from New York as well.

The Falcons entered last season with punter Michael Koenen trying to handle all of the kicking and punting chores. After he struggled on field goals early in the season, the Falcons signed veteran Morten Andersen, who went on to pass Gary Anderson as the NFL's all-time leading scorer last season.

Cundiff has made 60 of 83 field goal attempts (72 percent) in stops with Dallas and New Orleans.

If the Falcons don't reach an agreement with Cundiff, they are expected to focus on former New Orleans kicker John Carney. They also haven't ruled out re-signing Morten Anderson.

Falcons president and general manager Rich McKay said after the draft that the team wanted to address its place-kicking situation by signing a veteran.
