FLOWERY BRANCH ? For the first time in Matt Ryan?s NFL career he faces a major fundamental change in how the Falcons will operate on offense.

Some applauded the departure of former coordinator Mike Mularkey, but it?s hard to argue that he presented Ryan with a formula that led to instant success, three trips to the playoffs, one trip to the Pro Bowl and a franchise-record passing mark last season.

Under Mularkey, Ryan posted a 43-19 regular-season record, but 0-3 in the playoffs.

That?s part of the reason why coach Mike Smith was extremely careful in selecting a new coordinator in Dirk Koetter. He believes that if the quarterback/coordinator relationship doesn?t work, the entire operation and possibly the team could implode.

Matt is going through a process,? Smith said. ?The relationship between the coordinator and the quarterback is one that probably needs to be the strongest one on the football team. I know that Dirk has worked with Matt as well as with Glenn.?

Upon conclusion of the offseason program Thursday, Smith was pleased with the first steps taken by Ryan and Koetter, who coached for one year (2007) with Smith in Jacksonville.

?Matt, I think, has really progressed,? Smith said. ?I think you can see it physically that he?s bigger. I think his arm strength is much-improved from the first four years.?:SIB

Koetter and Ryan have spent a lot of time together in order to make sure that they get on the same page with the new offensive attack.

Some of the major differences in the passing attack will be more vertical routes with an emphasis on getting the ball to receivers on the move. Also, the team will implement a package heavy in screen passes.

Koetter and Ryan?s meetings have been fruitful.

?Matt will look you in the eye and tell you how he sees it ...,? Koetter said. ?By the same token, I can tell him what I think, what I see and what the coaching staff sees. He takes coaching well, but he also gives good feedback.?

Ryan notes that there are some key differences from Mularkey?s attack.

On the first day of minicamp, the offense struggled as the defense, under new coordinator Mike Nolan, unleashed a flurry of stunts and blitzes. The offense was bogged down and there were signs of frustration.

In part, that was by design.

?It hasn?t been like the last few years, where Matt knows when he comes out here that the defense is going to install this coverage,? Smith said. ?It?s been a little bit more of a chess match between the offensive coordinator and the defensive coordinator because it?s the first time that they?ve worked together in terms of how we install our offense and defense. This is the first sequence that we had to do it as a new staff.

?That?s always an interesting dynamic, not only for the coaches, but for the players.?

Koetter welcomed the assortment of looks from Nolan.

?Coach Nolan has been giving us a bunch of tough looks defensively ? a lot of the problems that you?re going to face during the season, our defense has been showing us those problems,? Koetter said. ?That?s great when you see it in practice, so now you?re not seeing it for the first time live.?

During the second minicamp practice Wednesday, the offense was on fire. Ryan was drilling passes to wide receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White. He was cutting up the defense with shots to backup tight ends LaMark Brown and Tommy Gallarda.

It was a dizzying passing display that drew raucous roars from the crowd on the hill and caused White to contend that it was the best practice in the past three seasons.

?I feel good,? Ryan said. ?I?ve worked hard this offseason. I feel like I?m in good shape and I felt really good out there during OTAs and minicamp. There is still some time before training camp. There is still time to work hard, to improve ourselves, and I think that everybody has got that mindset.?

Despite tight end Tony Gonzalez missing minicamp because of a death in his family, Ryan felt the offseason workouts were very important in order to help Jones continue to develop.

Jones was all over the field catching passes on the run, putting his hand down on grass to balance himself at times, while still running near top speed.

?He?s had an opportunity to work with our receivers coach Terry Robiskie without the stress of a week during the season and without a game plan,? Ryan said. ?He can really just work on technique. Work on route-running and try to understand our offense a little more in depth.?

White has witnessed the give-and-take between Koetter and Ryan and believes that the relationship is headed in the right direction.

?Dirk has made it easy,? White said. ?He has things that he?d like to do. We have some things that we like to do, and he just put it together and we?re rolling. Everybody has brought into the system. We are going to just keep rolling.?

Falcons 8-8

From what I see so far after the first mini camp the Falcons really havnt changed that much.

They can say Matty Ice has got bigger and is stronger through weight training etc. I don't see it. He still has the same issues with not being able to thread the needle when he has to. He also is affected by the bright lights of big games and the playoffs. Matty ice

The Falcons still have to showcase the Burner Turner who has lost two steps, is over 30 , and gets arm tackled way too much. It seems like he gets stopped for loss 70% of the time. And Turner is still the Falcons feature back to get a first down or score at the goal line ? I think not.

Granted Julio Jones is a monster and Roddy White is still solid but older. Harry Douglas is a good third receiver and will compete for the punt return job.

Replacing Weems who did so much in running punts, kickoffs, and was a top tackler on special teams is going to be hard to replace.

Tony Gonzalez in his retirement year. Thats a joke and the Falcons have no other choice but to play him. He can still catch balls over the middle occasionally but he is a detriment to the overall offense.

The defense should pick up with Asanti Samual as he is a high octane guy. But that aint going to help when the Falcons still have no pass rush.

Dunta Robinson is forced to the middle and he says he is happy about it, but I guarantee he was miffed. Its a ego thing basically saying he is not capable to cover the best receivers in the NFL.
This was a terrible free agent pick for the Falcons as he gets burned way too much. It continued in the mini camp with Jones and White running over him roughshod. And they still owe Dunta millions and are stuck with him.

Speaking of the pass rush the Falcons keeping Abraham who is old was all they could do. He rarely gets in the backfield for sacks and never is in the right place to tackle a running back or the QB for that matter.

Edwards another free agent who was supposedly hurt when the Falcons got him has not shown he is anywhere near worth what he got.

The Falcons still have Snelling who is a solid back up and tested the free agent market and no one wanted him. And second year Rodgers who may be too small to ever make it big in the NFL . Even though he was young and learning, Rodgers is not that fast and was tackled pretty easy when he tried to dish and dash through the line for gains.

I watch all the Falcons games and probably have the best understanding of this NFL team and what they are trying to do on both sides of the ball during the season.

For me when Vick left I lost some wins betting for and against the Falcons as he was so predictable.

Here is another downer for the Falcons. Their schedule this year is brutal. There are no cupcakes in this years schedule.

I wouldnt be surprised if the Saints with all their problems have a better record than the Falcons when all is said and done.

I think the team to watch in this Division is the Carolina Panthers and Cam Newton

Unlike the Falcons the Panthers made some solid picks in the draft and got better. With Newton throwing over 4 K yds as a rookie he will improve those numbers this year.

The Falcons did not play well in either game vs the Panthers and I think this year they might lose both. Or at least the away game.

Go Falcons

The Defensive End Hybrid Debate

In an interview during mini-camp, Mike Nolan may have confirmed what many fans have thought since his hiring: that even though the 4-3 will be the base defense, that fans can expect several 3-4 looks in 2012. He also was quoted as saying that all the defensive ends currently on the roster would be standing up as OLB?s in his pure 3-4 defenses. The numbers for the roster have stayed fairly consistent during the Mike Smith Era, with only a few changes here and there. Overall, the Falcons have kept 5 DT?s, 5 DE?s, and 6 LB?s, and 10 DB?s (6 CB?s + 4 S) on the roster. The big question is, with so many supposedly young and talented DE?s, who would be cut or move more to an OLB type role.

Edwards Probably Won't, but Biermann Maybe @ OLB (AJC)

Ray Edwards comes in at the heaviest defensive end at 268, so he?ll likely stay at defensive end in a 4-3 or move to a 5 technique DE in a 3-4. John Abraham certainly can play with his hand up and drop back into coverage, as Brian Van Gorder?s fetish proved, but in general, Abraham has made his hay with his hand in the dirt. That doesn?t mean that Abraham won?t play in a standup / OLB role, but that most of his snaps will be at defensive end.

Kroy Biermann appears one of the likely candidates to move into an OLB type role. Coming out of Montana as a rookie, Biermann was 241 lbs. Most scouting projections actually had him playing as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. Biermann, being the excellent team guy that he is, gained up to 260 lbs to play defensive end and has had mixed results there. He has shown the athleticism needed with his pass deflection, interception, and subsequent rumble for defensive touchdown. He did it in 2010 against Cleveland and 2011 vs. Chicago. He?s listed now as 255 and definitely looks lighter than he used to in mini-camp and OTA?s. Even though he has shown he can play defensive end, outside linebacker might be his new position.

Lawrence Sidbury was one of the most athletic defensive ends to come out of the 2009 draft and hasn?t disappointed while showing flashes as a Falcon. Many have wondered if Sidbury could make the transition to a standup OLB if needed or desired. He?s 6?2, and listed at 261, but came out of Richmond at 266. Many are hoping for big things from Sidbury this year with his athletic ability and pass-rushing skills. Sidbury?s right up there with Biermann as a candidate for a hybrid mix.

New draft pick Jonathan Massaquoi has also undergone a transformation like Biermann. However, instead of gaining weight, Mass has dropped weight, down 15 lbs from 275 back to 260. The 5th round draft pick is very similar to Sidbury in build, height, and weight. He has shown a knack for getting after the QB and getting back to his original weight has helped in the process. Massaquoi will probably be seeing looks standing up and with his hand on the ground.

Finally, there?s the curious case of Cliff Matthews. Matthews showed some glimpses last preseason and of course was never seen or heard from again under Smith and Van Gorder?s previous defense. Matthews is 6?4, but his weight remains a mystery. NFL.com has him listed as 268 lbs, closer to Ray Edwards. Atlanta Falcons most current roster listing has him at 257. Much like Abraham, Sidbury ,and Massaquoi, Matthews may see looks at both spots. Matthews likely has the biggest uphill battle to make the active roster if they decide to go with only 5 defensive ends.

.............................................................

This is the Falcons pass rush from the ends.

The Falcons have said there will be alot of competition for jobs on the offensive line. What that interprets to is the Falcons have no clue who the starters will be on the most important offensive line positions. :scared

Matty Ice better learn the two step drop and the hurried back pedal real quick during training camp.

Another thing I hate about the Falcons is that they never make bold moves to help the team with good players.

I know most ppl will poo poo this idea but the Falcons should have pursued Tebow when he was offered for a fourth round pick. That would have shook things up. Tebow is a quality person who could have helped the Falcons in alot of ways.

Why was this not even considered ? They didnt want to hurt Matty Ice feelings or put any undo pressure on him. No not that.

Blank is too self centered and he will not allow that type of thing even tho he supposedly makes no decisions.

Wilson and Redmond are good back ups but they aint going to take the Falcons to the playoffs if Matty Ice goes down.

Falcons must improve in the backup QB position in the next draft or face big trouble in the future.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - The Atlanta Falcons have chosen Wisconsin fullback Bradie Ewing in the fifth round of the NFL draft.

Ewing was a Wisconsin teammate of Peter Konz, an offensive lineman drafted by Atlanta in the second round Friday.

Wisconsin coaches chose Ewing as the team's top special teams player last season.

Atlanta began Saturday with four picks, two in the fifth round, one in the six and one in the seventh

............................................................

I really like this kid from Wisky.

He will help clear space for the running backs, has excellant hands, and will play strong special teams.

3. The defense will be unpredictable on third downs. Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan threw the kitchen sink at the offense during minicamp. He clearly has a mandate to improve the third down defense. ?We feel that it?s an honor that he feels he can rush seven or eight guys and he has confidence in his guys on the back end,? Robinson said. ?Pressure means the ball is coming out fast. That will give us an opportunity to make a lot of plays. We are ready for the opportunity.?

Thak God. We were a predictable disaster on defense on 3rd downs?.ALL LAST SEASON.

?We are gelling as a secondary,? Robinson said. ?That?s the most important thing to us. We are learning each other. Myself, Grimes and Asante, we are learning how to play with each other. That was the most important thing going into training camp. We are getting comfortable with each other and we are having fun. That was the biggest thing.?

I?ll be happier knowing Dunta?s not on the outside anymore, and will get to be more effectively physical against slot guys .

4. Julio Jones is going to the Pro Bowl. The second-year wide receiver is starting to look very polished. ?It?s great, not only spending time with [wide receivers coach Terry] Robiskie, but with Matt [Ryan],? Jones said. ?Just connecting on balls and knowing where I supposed to be at, at the right time and right depth. That?s very critical for me.?

That and a dose of health. If you think he had major flashes last season, get ready for lightning bolts up the defense?s arse. No more jealousy of watching other teams have WRs that make long bomb catches or tough ones over the middle for 15+ yards, like Marques Colston, Larry Fitzgerald, Megatron, etc. We?ve got our own.

5. The Falcons will be fine at middle linebacker. Both Lofa Tatupu and Akeem Dent looked at home while rotating with the first team defense. It looks like either one of them will be able to replace Curtis Lofton?s tackling skill in the middle. ?Akeem is a young player that we?re hoping just continues to mature and get better and better,? Nolan said. ?Hopefully that?s happening. He?s done a real good job out here. Lofa is a dependable guy that?s a veteran, who has some pelts on the wall. He?s done an outstanding job and he gets a lot of respect from the players around him because of that. He?s also a willing player as far as the young guys go. He?s not a selfish older player, where it?s all about him. He?s been a leader. He?s been to the Pro Bowl. He?s been to the Super Bowl. He?s done a lot of things. He remains the same guy, only a little bit older. That will be an interesting thing to watch as far as competition goes.?

There was a time when it seemed that Lofton would be the premiere and distinguished leader of the Falcon defense for years to come. Not so anymore. Not only does this speak well of Dimitroff?s drafting and FA moves, it shows that a real NFL DC makes a much bigger difference than a run stuffing LB.

In fact, relying on Lofton to make the defense do what it needs to do is akin to relying on Turner to make the offense go. In both cases, the team has been held back by the limitations of the player?but that hasn?t been the player?s fault?.

............................................................

Julio Jones was subject to injury at Alabama and the other knock was that he dropped balls.

Hope to see him play the entire season and make the catchs downfield he is supposed to make.

anyone saying the Falcons defense is going to be top rated is nuts in my opinion.

Time will tell.

I dont see the offense being any better than last year at beating the better teams.

Go Falcons

Vick?s seminar was entitled ?Are You Bigger Than the Game?? Vick?s story served as a resounding answer to that question.

Vick talked about missing his mother?s 45th birthday and the anniversary of his grandmother?s death. He also warned the incoming rookies ? including the Falcons? contingent of six ? that having too many ?yes men? could lead to trouble. He also touched on his lack of commitment to the game and how he?d fly home ? presumably to check on the dogs ? instead of working on the Falcons? upcoming game plan.

how did we know Vick wasn't working on his

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, in an apparent snub by NFL players, apparently has not made the league?s popular Top 100 list.

The Top 10 players of last season will be revealed tonight at 8 p.m. on the NFL Network.

Host Lindsay Rhodes will be joined by NFL Network analysts Warren Sapp and Marshall Faulk to recap the 90 players that have been revealed thus far and discuss who will be tabbed the best player in the NFL.

The list ? which has Tim Tebow rated 95th and Peyton Manning rated 50th even though he didn?t play last season ? was voted on by the players themselves.:SIB

Running back Michael Turner (88), wide receiver Roddy White (65) and tight end Tony Gonzalez are the only Falcons already named. White was not real pleased with his selection, either.

Despite throwing for a franchise-record 4,153 yards last season and guiding the Falcons to the playoffs for the second consecutive season for the first time in franchise history, Ryan apparently has not made the list.

Why did the players stiff Ryan?
............................................................

Last year was Matty Ice's ?senior? year, and he still has a noodle arm. He has Julio, Roddy and three more guys, and he can?t stretch the field.

Matty is on thin ice. I don?t want to hear anything about a new OC or system because all reports are that Koetter is basically keeping the same play book but will call it more aggressively.

This year we?ll find out if the folks who said Mularkey was protecting Ryan with his one-dimensional play-calling were right.

Matt Ryan cannot win a playoff game?

A future HoF?er in the hearts of the Atlanta sports media and Falcons franchise. When he wins a big playoff game he?ll get more respect. It?s not a snub when it?s a fair assessment.

Matty could not convert 4TH AND 1 AND 4TH AND INCHES ON A QUATERBACK SNEAK. MATT IS NOT ELITE?SORRY.

It really does say alot when your peers dont put you on the list and Tebow and Manning who didnt even play last year are on it.

Noodle arms dont gain respect in the NFL players minds.

The Falcons QB is not considered in the top 100 and no better than Tim Tebow or Cam Newton???

I think folks in the league have seen what we are beginning to see?too many weapons and too much talent to play as lethargic as he does. Since his rookie year, Matt has played with minimum mojo, kept it safe 95% of the time, and has come off as being ?scared? in big games.

Anyone remember the very first pass he threw in the playoff game against Green Bay? If not, go back and take a look. Indicative.

I?m not so sure that Blank, Dimitroff and this new guy will do anything to change Ryan.

Bill Parcells would light a fire so hot under Matt?s ass that he would be a better player by midseason. Of 2012!

Falcons Superbowl ? :mj07:

It really does all come down to Ryan when the Falcons future this year is looked at. I personally dont think he will step up to the plate.

Michael Vick admits to costing the Falcons a Super Bowl title

? Michael Vick went on NFL Network?s NFL Total Access show tonight and basically admitted to costing the Falcons a shot at

He talked about his poor study habits while with the Falcons and has concluded that he?d probably have a Super Bowl ring if he started studying back in the day before he went to jail on federal dog fighting charges.

The Falcons are one of the 14 teams that have never won the Super Bowl.

Vick is promoting a biography that is set to be released on Sept. 4. Tony Dungy wrote the foreword.

Here is a video link and transcript of the interview.

(ASIDE: He talks about how he knew more about breeding dogs than the playbook. If remember correctly, the court documents detailed how Vick?s dogs were get whipped on the regular because he would buy cheap and then try to coach them. His dogs had a ?losing? record.)

Here are the highlights of the interview:

On how good he would be right now if he would have had his current habits earlier in his career: ?The sky is the limit. I probably would have already had a ring on my finger, but that?s easy to say. With any team you still have to have 11 guys on offense, defense and special teams that can put it all together. But I would have made a better contribution. I just give thanks now that I?m an even better quarterback and I give a lot of credit to my coaches for that.?

On his comments that he would have probably already had a Super Bowl ring if he worked as hard earlier in his career as he does now: ?Yeah, maybe so. That?s just me hypothetically speaking. I know how to work hard, I know I would have been better. Maybe if I would have put more time and effort into my craft then I could have done some things differently. But like I said, it still takes a total team effort to win football games and I understand that.?

On if it ever crossed his mind that he kept doing something he knew was wrong because he wanted to get caught so he could stop doing it: ?No, it never crossed my mind. I always thought about what would happen or what could happen, but until it finally happens, then you start to think about the consequences behind it. I just wanted to get away from it all at some point, but the moment I started to turn the corner it was too late. So I?m just thankful that I got another opportunity to do it all over again and do it the right way because it would have been tough on me mentally and emotionally if I would have never gotten an opportunity to do it again.?
.........................................................

It really sounds like Vick is boasting about what could have been because he could have been a contender.

Glad he is Philly .

And he has said to all philly fans that this year he is going to protect himself so he can play all 16 games.

how the hell is he saying that. What is he going to do run out of bounds more, carry the ball like a loaf of bread more, pass more quick when he is being chased .....

what a joke

Philly defense is very good though. I say no way Vick lasts all year without injury. He is too fragile and he dont like the big hits.

Dan Reeves told Vick he should study more and gave him a book on leadership. They later found the book in the trash can. Nice going Mike .

GO FALCONS !

So let me get this right.

Matt Ryan was criticized so much about not being able to throw the long ball into space that he set his mind to bulking up.

He was to put on muscle and hit the weights hard to improve his strength.

Problem is about January he stopped the program and just went to Five Guys for triple cheeseburgers with the Burner Turner everyday for lunch.

Matty Ices shoulders look like Olive Oils when they should look like Popeye's

Ryan could spear a olive out of the jar with one of them elbows.

Ryan Bulked up , He put on muscle for upper body strength................:142smilie

FLOWERY BRANCH?Just up the road a bit in Athens back in March 2008, Georgia coach Mark Richt made a decision that would later impact the fortunes of the Falcons.

The Bulldogs decided that because strongside linebackers were basically being pushed out the college game with the increased use of three- and four-wide receiver sets, that they would some of their players around.

Richt moved Akeem Dent from strongside to middle linebacker, in order to keep his tackling ability on the field. Back then, the Bulldogs didn't want their bulky linebackers getting caught in space trying to cover wide receivers.

Fast forward to 2012, Dent, who was selected in the third round of last year's NFL draft, took his spot in the middle of the Falcons' first-team defense Thursday, the opening day of training camp.

With the release of Lofa Tatupu because of a season-ending pectoral injury that required surgery, Dent will get his chance to replace Curtis Lofton, the team's top tackler last season with 159. Lofton signed with the New Orleans Saints in free agency.

"We feel like he's ready to go; that's why we drafted him," Falcons coach Mike Smith said. "We drafted him to be our [middle] linebacker."

In 2011, Dent made 19 tackles on special teams, two short of the team-record of 21 set by Artie Ulmer in 2002. Dent recorded only one tackle from scrimmage while seeing limited action.

"The biggest key is just to get him as many snaps as we possibly can," Smith said. "[The team must] expose him to the different situations that are going to come up in a game. Today, we were working on our base defense and third-down and mediums."

At Georgia, Dent started 29 of 47 games. He started 16 at strongside linebacker and 13 at middle linebacker and made 240 tackles.

"For a young guy, he's played a lot of football in his career, but not in the NFL," Smith said.

Dent tried to learn from Tatupu, a former All-Pro player, over the offseason. Tatupu stressed to Dent the need to get louder and be confident when calling the defensive signals.

"I'm just basically making sure that I'm at full speed all of the time and just trying to be consistent," Dent said.

To replace Tatupu, the Falcons re-signed 13-year veteran Mike Peterson on Monday. He knows all three linebacker positions and mentored Lofton and Sean Weatherspoon.

"I can definitely tell him how to play the game and then lead him in the right direction," Peterson said. "My job is to get Dent ready."

Peterson, who is well-liked and deeply respected in the locker room, will start off as Dent's backup.

Lofton was a key cog in the defense. While the Falcons struggled against the pass, the run defense was stout. Lofton led the charge as the Falcons gave up 97 yards rushing a game in 2011, which ranked sixth in the league.

So, Dent has some big cleats to squeeze into.

"Last year, he had a chance to see how we go in there and break down tape," Peterson said. "See how we prepare for the game. See how we get our bodies ready. It's a lot of stuff that people take for granted. If he takes that in, then coming out here on the playing field will be easy."

The Bulldogs' staff knew what they were doing with their strongside backers back in 2008. On the same day Dent was moved, Justin Houston, also a strongside linebacker, was moved to defensive end. (He later moved back to outside linebacker in the 3-4 defense.)

Houston and Dent were taken in the third round of the 2011 draft. Houston went to Kansas City 70th overall and Dent to the Falcons 21 picks later. Houston started 10 games and had 5.5 sacks last season.

Dent likely will handle the run downs at the start and eventually must prove to the coaches that he can handle passing downs.

"I've got to approach it the same way that I always have," Dent said. "I still have a whole lot of work to do. Lofa was here and he was helping me out. He was leading me. Bringing in Mike Peterson, it's the same deal. I still have a lot of work to do."

If Houston and Dent can hold on to their spots, they both could be starting when the Falcons play the Chiefs in the season opener on Sept. 9.
............................................................

IF the Falcons are pinning their hopes on Dent to start and be the key to the defense, they could be in big trouble.

Tiatupo went out for the season after injuring his pectoral muscle again.

The Falcons have a terrible history of picking players up that have had injurys. It has really hurt them .

Now they bring back Mike Peterson who was a has been when they released him.

The biggest part of news for the day though is that Corey Peters will miss a further three weeks with a foot injury. He missed minicamp, and now will miss a lot of training camp while he is on the Physically Unable to Perform list (PUP).

That means that Peria Jerry, the third defensive tackle behind Corey Peters and Jonathan Babineaux. Jerry has his one final season in which to become an impactful player in this Falcons defense. I have no doubt Peters will be ready and healthy by the time the season starts and for the last couple weeks of training camp, and can be a important for the Falcons. I sincerely hope, however, that Jerry really steps up. We need this former first rounder from 2009 to prove he is even worth some pick from that draft and that he is not a complete bust. His health will be a large part of that.

......................................................

This is another example of a injury prone player drafted knowing he had trouble with his feet.

Now he is out 3 weeks again and who knows if he will be ready then.

Both the offensive and defensive lines of the Falcons will be very suspect.

Lasts year the Falcons had a major problem with no pass rush and third downs for the other team being almost automatic.

They have the same group and the ends are old and slow.

Some ppl say that Asanti in the secondary is going to give them more time to rush without completions. I say bullchit.

Aaron Rodgers , Peyton, Eli will pick the Falcons apart like shooting geese in a park.

this does not bode well for the Falcons winning more than they lose this season.

Flowery Branch ? As the Brent Grimes? contract situation played out during the offseason, the Falcons cornerback insists he wasn?t about to worry.

Who needs the gray hair?

The Falcons kept Grimes for another season when they placed the franchise tag on him in March. He will earn $10.281 million this season on a one-year contract.

?Honestly, it?s not my problem to deal with,? Grimes said following Saturday?s training camp practice. ?I do what I do. I play football. That?s what I have agents for. They call me and tell me what?s going on. Whatever happens, I?m just going to come out and play football. I don?t worry about all that. I just have to worry about covering people.?

Cornerback Brent Grimes is set to make $10.281 million in 2012, but reportedly would like a long-term deal.

Hours after the Falcons announced they had placed the franchise tag on Grimes, paying him the average of the top-five salaried cornerbacks in the NFL, his agent said he would not sign the tender. Both sides hoped to work out a long-term deal. Grimes signed the tender in April when such a contract could not be reached.

?That?s just how it is,? Grimes said. ?You don?t really have to [sign the franchise tag immediately]. It wasn?t like I was drawing a line in the sand. You don?t have to [sign right away] so there wasn?t any need to [sign right away]. I?ve been here for all the OTAs, all the minicamps.?

Still, the security of a long-term contract would go a long way for Grimes. He is entering his fifth season with the Falcons after making the team as an undrafted free agent out of Shippensburg University. Grimes made the Pro Bowl following the 2010 season.

?Everybody wants that,? Grimes said. ?That would be a lie to say I didn?t want that. You do what you have to do. I can?t worry about what is going on in the front office. I just play football. ? If I started worrying about all that, I?d have gray hair. I make life as simple as possible.?

It won?t exactly be business as usual for Grimes. New defensive coordinator Mike Nolan is adding wrinkles, especially with the addition of cornerback Asante Samuel. There have been times during training camp when Grimes has moved from his left cornerback position to the right side.

Grimes said he is comfortable with the adjustment. Nolan might be even more comfortable after getting a first-hand look at Grimes? athleticism recently. Nolan said he was walking through the weight room and watched as the 5-foot-10 Grimes, standing on one leg, jumped on top of a box four feet high.

?He?s more athletic than I had actually thought he was,? Nolan said. ?? Shoot, I can?t jump six inches on one leg. He went right up and landed on the same foot. That was pretty impressive from an athletic stand point.?

Nolan said one big adjustment in the new defensive scheme is the coordination between the roles of the cornerbacks and safeties. It has been a big focus early in training camp and the coordinator praised the work of Grimes, whom he called a ?franchise player.?

Grimes said he is 100 percent recovered from the right knee surgery he had in November that caused him to miss three of the last four regular-season games and the playoff loss to the Giants. He finished with one interception, 35 tackles and 12 assists in 12 games. He played in all 16 regular-season games in both 2009 and 2010 and had a combined 11 interceptions, including five in 2010 when went to the Pro Bowl as an alternate.

There might be one more job for Grimes this season. Or maybe not.

The Falcons are looking for a new punt returner and Grimes, and he has in previous seasons, can often be found fielding kicks. Coach Mike Smith said there is an open competition for the job and praised Grimes? hands and vision.

Grimes said punt return was his favorite while playing collegiately. He?ll keep working at it and while he wishes for such an opportunity he doubts it will come.

?I?m like ?In case of emergency, break glass,?? Grimes said.

......................................................

Grimes is a good player but jumping 4 ft on a box aint going to get him more interceptions.

The Falcons secondary is going to be better with Asanti but lets face it , the Phillys did not give up their best CB . They gave us a older one with maybe a step gone bye bye.

The Falcons still got Dunkahead Robinson collecting millions for not covering his mama.
What a horrible trade that turned out to be from Houston. We owe them one for that chit.

My feeling is that the defense is not going to be anywhere near what they should be to win a Super Bowl.

I like the KC and Denver games to gauge the Falcons and how the rest of the season will go.

At KC is going to be a tough game to start the season. Next on the plate is Peyton who will most likely dink and dunk and make the Falcons cry.

That is if Peyton dont get his neck twisted in the first game.

If the Falcons allow Grimes to run back punts or kick offs they are nuts.

Yeh they wouldnt pay Weems so now you put your 10 million dollar franchise tag player running back kicks.

I dont think so. Use James Rogers rookie and be done with it.

[/New Orleans Saints

1. There's a definite us-against-the-world feeling in camp. I spent an hour or so with Drew Brees while he lunched in the Saints cafeteria, and he made it clear that the players, and the organization, believe strongly that they have been wronged by the NFL in the Saints bounty probe. Paraphrasing Brees (and you can read the bulk of his comment in my Monday Morning Quarterback column this week), Brees differentiates between the pay-for-performance bonus system, which many teams had in place the last few years, and the bounty system, which the NFL claims the Saints were guilty of fostering over the past three seasons. And he thinks, as do many in the Saints locker room and front office, that the league overstepped its bounds in suspending Saints players, coaches and GM Mickey Loomis a total of 77 games. Brees made his point very clear: The Saints will remember what they feel is an injustice, and it will come in handy when motivation is needed in 2012.

2. Brees might have missed the entire offseason in his contract dispute, but he looked fantastic in the 75 minutes I watched Friday. So much for offseason contract-wrangling. New Orleans media monster Bobby Hebert (he of the Seinfeld George Constanza "Bobby Ay-BEAR" fame) told me Brees had an other-worldly first practice Thursday after his contract hassle, and every time I looked up he was hitting Jimmy Graham or Lance Moore or even Nick Toon square in the hands in the afternoon workout.

3. Curtis Lofton is a better middle linebacker than Jonathan Vilma today. The Saints are thrilled with the versatility and leadership shown thus far by Lofton, who has had to walk a locker-room tightrope because the suspended Vilma is such a good locker-room presence. Lofton told me he's had to be careful to not be a dominating presence early, but he also made clear that the middle 'backer has to be the defensive captain on the field, and he hasn't shied from that. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo loves Lofton, by the way. He thinks Lofton is the perfect signal-caller and physical athletic presence he requires in his scheme for a middle linebacker.

Step On Up

Running back Mark Ingram. Last year, Payton got Bill Parcells on the phone and had him talk to Ingram about playing hurt. Parcells coached Ingram's dad, the incarcerated Mark Ingram, a wide receiver, with the Giants. The Saints traded a future first-round pick to acquire the younger Ingram late in Round 1 in 2011, and the early returns have been mediocre. True, the Saints have the versatile Pierre Thomas as their primary back, and the explosive Darren Sproles for the all-purpose role out of the backfield, but the Saints are counting on Ingram to be a 200-touch player for them this year -- and surrendered a first-round pick in 2012 to get him. He's got to deliver so the Saints don't have to wear Thomas down.

New Face, New Place

Defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley. John Fox loved Bunkley last year in Denver and the Broncos very much wanted to keep him as the keystone to their defensive tackle corps. But the Saints stole him for $5 million a year, on average, which stunned the Broncos. Five million a year for a defensive tackle who likely won't be a three-down player? Bunkley's going to have to be great against the run -- which the Saints need -- to justify the big payday.

....................................................

I have read alot about the Falcons winning their Division expecially since bounty gate.

:142smilie The Saints are pissed.

Go Falcons

Andy Reid of the Eagles has come out and said Asanti Samuals was in deep decline. If the Falcons have him and Dunta playing at the same time watch out for long plays over their heads.

AS is a blowhard who is all about his own stats. He will take chances to increase his own Int. stats so look for him to burnt toast quite alot. He often plays outside of what the defensive scheme is asking him to do. Thats not a team player thats a ME player.

If he changes what he has done in the past, then I have a question for him. Why does it take being traded after countlessly thumbing his nose at defensive coordinators to change?

Thats because its about his ego. High risk/high reward with him. Teams love to take advantage of his aggressive nature with burning him on stop and go routes. Prepare yourselves to be frustrated with him quite often.

Falcons vs Eagles this year in Philly?.Eagles will test the?steep declining? AS often. I smell smoke already. If he is still playing by then. Chances are by October?he will have worn out his welcome.

There is a reason Belichek let him go as well. Tired of him doing his own thing as well. Good luck with the ?declining? one.

The Burner Turner has still not been able to push away from the chow table.

He needs this girdle thing to hold up his stomach.

Turner is pissed his carries will go from 20 a game down to 10

I say Harrah

Dude gets tackled for loss way too much.

At 31 he should be far more productive but he has always been the best the Falcons got.

Against weak defense he churns up his yards but let Green Bay come to town and watch his yards go to 50
