Gentlemen:

I've received a job offer which would require me to move to Dallas. Other than the airport and the Texas Book Depository, I am quite unfamiliar with Dallas. Before I pull the trigger on this job, I was wondering if some of "y'all" could pass on some information on where I should live, expect to pay for housing, things to do (ie golf courses), etc. Financially, lateral move but better career ceiling as I work my way back into the practice of law.

Pretty sure I'm going to take the job although I really like the Bay Area and have some trepidations about moving to Texas. Any input would be helpful. My job will be located near Love Field.

Gracias,
Eddie

If it's a lateral move, you should have much more as housing will be way cheaper than California. That's my only input, so we will wait for the Texas guys.

Hey Edwardo,
If you're going to be by luce field than you'll be more on the northern side of the city itself. Your housing costs will be drastically reduced but the cost itself will be strictly up to you and your choice of hoods. If commute is something you want to keep short than garland, Mckinney, Coppell, Richardson, Frisco, Plano will all be solid options for a house. A new house around 2800 square feet with a pool should run you about 180k-250 +/- 20k. Housing market flat out booming here as they're still adding thousands of new homes every year. There are plenty of pre-owned homes as well as new, it will be completely up to you as far as what is important to you.
If it's imperative that you remain in close proximity to available penis and ring pops than you'll want to stay in the Oak Lawn area which is very close to your place of work. I believe there is an Old Navy and a Limited for Men there as well so you can stay on the cutting edge of fashion.
Good golf courses abound as there are plenty in all surrounding areas. There are several private clubs and such as well, however membership is scrutinized from what I understand so you'll want to consider a municipal course.
The food sucks unless you are a huge chain restaurant fan. I mean there's places to get a good meal just not anything with any particular flair. Hope you like ranch dressing.
In truth the food is fine i suppose but you're not going to get a great Chicago hot dog, pizza, gyro, or anything like that, nor a bad ass Philly, lobster roll, etc...they're are places that have them but not the preferred fare.
The weather is the weather and I personally think it's great, or in teens you're more accustomed to, fabulousness!! I don't mind the heat at all. Get your windows tinted and bring a Gatorade with you. You'll spend much less on clothing, although I've seen you dress before so I can't imagine that has ever been a concern previously. I'm sure there's a Walmart and Sam's still sells the occasional irregular haggar slacks with expandable waist band.
There is no public transportation really worth mentioning however there is some.
There are quite a few new medical districts in your area, some designed specifically for memory care and have sitting pros that can show you how to not leave a 20 foot putt 31 feet short.
The commute from the fort worth area which is probably expanding a bit more and such isn't bad but a lot of construction en-route. If you stay in the areas I mentioned earlier you'll likely never find me there as I live in Fort Worth area.
You will probably want to get a pick up truck. One of the Ford dealers here will do a customized F-250 power stroke diesel in a "Metroplex Ken Doll Edition" that has a larger diameter tail pipe and the radio only plays lady Gaga songs.
You can always call me brother. I don't know if you still have my cell number but it is easy to find anyway.
It's in Facebook on my company's page or just ask I'll give it to you if you need it.
I hope you make the move man, it would be good to have ya out here

Hope this helps,
FDC

Thanks Fat,

I need your number as I need you to translate that rambling piece of rat dung you just posted. JK, thanks for the insight. I am probably going to rent a studio or 1 bedroom as close to work as possible. My place of employment will be on Empire Central Drive. I definitely want to meet up with you (not for golf or fishing) as I don't know anyone in Dallas. Is it okay if I date your granddaughter?

Get me your number or facebook page so I can contact you.

No granddaughter yet so you're good to date her. Let me know when you get it and I'll take it down or EI or jaek can. Nor a big deal being it's on the Internet anyway.
There's some bad ass lofts in place you may want to consider. The neighborhoods around love field aren't exactly ideal bit some closer enough for what you'll be looking for.

I have an ex-girlfriend that's a real estate person that can probably help you find something. She's pretty smoking hot as well if you need. She may be dating someone now but nothing too serious that a six pack and a fatty can't help with.

Master Edward,
Just under 2 years ago I packed up and moved down to DFW similar to your move right now.
I do not regret it one bit.

Granted, I'm a family man and am not the deplorable that you no doubt are so I am sure the social circles we frequent may be vastly different.. :) but as far as the living conditions and quality of life down here.. quite positive.

DFW has a bit of everything, for everyone. It's lovely in that aspect. Aside from the ball sweat you get just waking up in june, july, and august heat.. it's a charming place to be down here.

Best advice to give when it comes to living arrangements - live on the same side of the DFW airport that you work.
Distance is not measured in miles down here, but in time. Crossing over the imaginary east/west line that runs up and down the DFW airport seems to add a lifetime to a commute each way.
I live in the northern fort worth side of town and aside from a special occasion, I will avoid crossing over to the Dallas side as much as possible. And the same holds true with my friends that live on the Dallas side. They'll lie about how busy they are every day to avoid heading out my way for dinner and drinks. In reality, it's probably about a 30 mile drive.

Cost of living down here, is cheaper than anywhere else I have lived. And there is the entire spectrum of income levels and social status. So you'll have your million dollar home subdivisions on one side of the street, and on the other side will be the normal people.

also to add, with empire central drive being your work area, you may consider living near Farmer's Branch. Nice area with upstanding people and far enough from work that you don't live in a bubble.

Thanks Marine,

I spoke with FDC this am and he gave me some good info as well. I may head on down your way for a weekend to find a place to live. FDC and I will meet up for a cocktail or two and we'll make sure to let you know when and where. Although you may not want to meet up with the deplorables that FDC and I admittedly are we will give you a holler regardless. After I meet up with FDC, I may have a cocktail with W and go over some old times.

Cheers,
Eddie

Eddie, I don't know you so I'm not sure how old you are but Las Colinas might be a good area for you to live in. It's a great area no matter your age with some things to do and a LOT being built that will make for an even better area. It would be close to your office but even more important(IMO) you would be in an area that allows you to go anywhere in the DFW area pretty quickly. It also isn't going to break the bank. There are other cool areas down there but to me they're all too expensive but for you it still may be cheap compared to what you're use to paying.

Depending on what you're looking for uptown might be good. It's a busy area where you can get out and walk to most places you want to go to. It would be an easy drive to Empire Central.

There's a new area just South of Empire Central that I've been told is very cool and is being built up at rapid pace.

Probably not going to suit your needs but the NW area of FW is absolutely the best place to live.

You will have limitless housing/apartment options near that part of town. You can head a bit north to highland park and spend 10,000,000 or keep heading south and spend 10,000 (would not recommend south Dallas lol) No matter what make sure the room with the most windows, most likely your living room, is NOT facing west. The sun will beat your ass down and the house will be hard to keep cool.

The traffic around that area is going to be a mess just be prepared.

If you like golf and the lake check out The Tribute. Two top notch courses on Lake Louisville, minutes from boating and a beach. The neighborhood is on a peninsula so very isolated and laid back compared to anything else. Everyone drives their golf carts around the neighborhood. Kayaking, fishing, biking, nature trails. We love it. Lots of kids but the next phase opening up will be smaller homes for adults. As far a I know kids will not be allowed near their amenities.

It would be a 40 minute drive from your office. But as you will learn.. Thats about standard. haha

Restaurants. You could live here two life times and not try them all. Some of my favorites are

Pappadeaux Sea food Kitchen
Del Friscos
Mi Cocina
Bread Winners (brunch)
Bobs Steak and Chop

The wife and I lived in Uptown before we had kids and moved to the burbs which is fairly close to you. I am familiar with the area if you have any questions.

Good luck

No state income tax, plus you don't have to live with the fruit nuts and flakes in Cali, its not a lateral move for you after you factor in no state income tax, come on down and enjoy the heat and humidity.:0008

good luck with the house search
