I am in a 12 team non-keeper league currently. We have already drafted this year, and we are debating on switching to a keeper league next season. Does anyone have suggestions as to what rules we should adopt for next year if we go to a Keeper league?

Thanks,

Yeah do it after next year. Making the switch after you draft is pretty not-smart IMHO as you have no chance to take fliers on late round picks who may pan out in a keeper league. Everyone should know going into the draft what the status will be for the next season, changing midstream isnt good.

I think everyone is cool doing it now. We understand that we probably would have drafted a little differently, but it doesn't matter. It's not an expensive league.

What I was looking for is who we should be able to keep and what draft picks should it cost.

Thanks for help!

Changing rules after the draft is wrong. Someone might have been willing to draft a longshot in hopes of a stud for next year.I run a f.f. league and it's a two player keeper. Any play keeped must have been draft after the third round. The team then forfits the pick in the round that there keepers was drafted. Also keepers must have been draft bye that team and never waved.Has worked out really well a still allows most of top players to be availible for the draft. This will also make people draft more rookies late in the draft in hopes of a good player next year.

What I meant by cost was what sportsnut is talking about--draft picks next year.

We didn't think about making it a keeper league until now, and everyone is fine with making it a keeper league now.

I am thinking of suggesting that we are only allowed to keep players drafted after the third round and have to give up the coinciding round's pick.

More suggestions will be appreciated.

I've played in 3 keepers a year for 9 years and I have never had a cost associated with keeping players in one league. Different strokes I guess.

ace--I meant costing you a draft pick not money. I'm not sure why that's hard to follow in this thread. for being such a smart guy, you kill me sometimes!:p

Duh retard  , yeah I get the point, and thats what I'm saying in terms of a pick "cost". Ive done I guess close to 30 keeper leagues now and never had rules or limitations put on who we keep or have had to sacrafice a pick. But hey thats just me.

You gotta give up something to keep'em!! Otherwise too many players are retained. I mean why the hell should someone get to keep Ricky Williams when they picked him with their first pick last year. Any moron can do that.

This is how I set ours up....

We draft 16 rounds....

1st round picks can be kept for next years 1st & 5th
2nd for 1st
3rd for 2nd
4th for 3rd
5-8 for 4th
9-16 for 5th

You may keep players for two additional years. The 1st round picks are kept for the first year for a 1st and 5th ...the next year its a 1st and 4th. The remaining of the picks you just go up one ..for example a 4th round selection will cost you a 3rd in year 2 then a 2nd in year 3.

Free agents do not count but players do retain their value through trades.

We only allow a max of 3 players to be retained per year.

Sorry I forgot we also only allow player to be keep for 1 year . Don't want people to lock -up good players for ever. We also have to draft our starters before you can draft a backup. I had M. Vick with a 10 round pick from last year and just got F***** but better to know then when the season starts.
