Final Push for the Playoffs in NHL

The hockey season is down to a precious few days and several teams have been fighting for survival just to make the playoffs, let alone worrying about what happens when they get there. Each conference has teams fighting to hang on or struggling to get in, looking to join the chase for the Stanley Cup. Here is look at the possibilities for all the contenders.

Eastern teams presently in

Montreal, Boston and Philadelphia occupy slots six thru eight in the Eastern Conference. Canadiens coach Jacques Martin has all but confirmed that Jaroslav Halak will be the starting goaltender for the remainder of the regular season. Montreal is 19-20 SU on the road and has winnable games at the New York Islanders and at Carolina before returning home to close the season against Toronto. Montreal should emerge as sixth seed.

After finishing second in goals scored a year ago in the NHL, the Bruins have been last most of the season putting the puck in the net and their only saving grace has been defense, with only New Jersey allowing fewer goals. Boston has home games against Buffalo and Carolina; however that isn?t necessarily a good thing for team that is 3-14 SU on home ice since Winter Classic at Fenway Park. Boston?s last game at Washington may be critical, however the Capitals might not bring best effort having wrapped up everything for the playoffs.

Philadelphia has lost nine of last 12 and has placed itself in precarious position. The Flyers can determine their own fate playing home and home with the New York Rangers whom they lead by a point in the standings. Right now Philadelphia also has an edge in a tie-breaker, with the first aspect looked at being number of wins.

Eastern teams trying to move up

The Rangers have won five of six including last three in a row and could use wins over Buffalo and Toronto to set up ?all in? matchups with the Flyers. ?We do not want to be the New York Rangers team that didn't make the playoffs," Brandon Dubinsky told the New York Post. "That's really important to us.?

Atlanta had a brutal close to the season schedule-wise, facing Washington and Pittsburgh twice along with taking on New Jersey. The Thrashers already lost to the Caps and Penguins last week and have to come up with six points in final three games to realistically even have a chance. Against this type of competition, that could be too tall an order.

Western teams presently in

Detroit has placed themselves in good position in the West, winning 10 of 13 and being as healthy as they have been all season. Rookie Jimmy Howard?s fine play between the pipes is the biggest reason why the Red Wings have gone from being a shaky participant to virtually in and has two matchups with Columbus that should give them the stamp of approval.

Of all the teams fighting to make the postseason, the Los Angeles Kings are the most impressive on their body of work for the year. The Kings are +22 in goal differential, basically the same as New Jersey and Phoenix, both who are comfortably in the playoff picture. L.A. can end Anaheim?s faint hopes with a victory and should earn two easy points hosting Edmonton before closing out the regular season at Colorado.

The Avalanche is gasping for air having tumbled to eighth in the West standings, by virtue of losing seven of nine. This young squad by appearances is just worn out from a long season after playing beyond expectations most of the year, which is evident on the defensive end, conceding three or more goals in all but one of their defeats. Playing at Edmonton should be a win; however with games at Vancouver, plus Chicago and the Kings on home ice, nothing is secured yet. The Avs are 24-15 SU on home ice which could help.

Western teams trying to move up

Calgary is attempting to make late charge, winning six of last 10, but its anemic offense will have to come up big vs. San Jose, Minnesota and at Vancouver to sneak into the playoffs.

Anaheim and St. Louis mathematically are still alive; however each has to win remaining contests to even get a sniff.

Montreal Canadiens (39-32-8) at New York Islanders (33-35-10), 7 p.m.

Jaroslav Halak picked a perfect time to post back-to-back shutouts for the playoff-hopeful Montreal Canadiens. The goaltender will try to make it three straight when his Habs visit the New York Islanders tonight at Nassau Coliseum.

Halak led the way in a 1-0 win over Philadelphia on Friday and anchored Montreal to a 3-0 victory over Buffalo the following day. As a result, the Czech backstop was named the NHL's First Star of the Week for the period ending April 4.

Partly because of Halak's heroics, the Habs are sixth in the Eastern Conference. The Canadiens can clinch a playoff berth with a win tonight combined with some help from the Flyers or the New York Rangers.

If the Habs win and either the Rangers or Flyers lose in regulation on Tuesday, then Montreal would secure a playoff spot. The Canadiens could also get in if they win and both New York and Philly get one point or if Montreal gets one point and both the Flyers and Rangers lose in regulation.

After stopping 35 shots in Friday's win over the Flyers, Halak made 29 saves to lead the Canadiens past the visiting Sabres.

"I think the team in front of me played even batter than last night," Halak said. "It was back-to-back games and we knew it was going to be tough because they (Buffalo) didn't have a game last night. I was hoping to win this game but the shutout makes it better."

Halak enters tonight with a shutout streak of 144 minutes, 41 seconds and he is 5-1-0 with a 1.16 goals against average in six career games against the Islanders.

Sergei Kostitsyn had a goal and an assist, while Tom Pyatt and Ryan O'Byrne also lit the lamp for the victors. Habs defenseman Jaroslav Spacek missed his second straight game with flu-like symptoms but is expected to return tonight.

Montreal is playing two straight on the road to end its away schedule before closing the regular season at home Saturday against Toronto. The Canadiens, who will visit Carolina on Thursday, are 19-16-4 as the guest this season.

The Canadiens have won all three meetings with the Islanders this season and have taken four straight and 10 of 12 overall in the series. Montreal has also won five in a row and six of its last seven at the Coliseum.

The Islanders were eliminated from playoff contention after Boston picked up a point in Monday's game against Washington. New York could still catch eighth- seeded Philadelphia in points, but not wins.

New York won for the fourth time in five games with a 4-1 home victory Saturday against Ottawa. John Tavares tallied a goal and an assist, leading the Islanders to the victory over the Senators.

Dylan Reese, Jack Hillen and Sean Bergenheim each added a goal for the Islanders, who will aim for a third straight win this evening. New York hasn't won three in a row since March 13-16.

Martin Biron was solid between the pipes, stopping 28-of-29 shots.

"Right now, the way we are playing, it seems to be clicking," Biron said. "We're frustrating teams, getting some goals, we're killing penalties. We are doing a lot of good things."

The Isles are 22-14-3 at the Coliseum and are capping a four-game homestand tonight. New York will visit Pittsburgh and New Jersey before closing its regular season Sunday with a home test against the Penguins.

New Jersey Devils (45-26-7) at Atlanta Thrashers (34-32-13), 7 p.m.

Ilya Kovalchuk will make his return to Atlanta tonight as his New Jersey Devils visit the Thrashers for an important Eastern Conference clash at Philips Arena.

Kovalchuk was traded to the Devils on Feb. 4 after spending his entire career with Atlanta and the Russian has posted 23 points (9 goals, 14 assists) in 23 games with New Jersey.

Atlanta made Kovalchuk the top overall pick in the 2001 draft and he holds club records in virtually every offensive category. He notched 328 goals and 287 assists in 594 games with the Thrashers.

"I had a great relationship with the fans, and with every single person in that organization," Kovalchuk said of returning to Atlanta. "I hope nobody takes it personally."

Kovalchuk and defenseman Anssi Salmela were dealt to New Jersey for defenseman Johnny Oduya, right wing Nicklas Bergfors, forward Patrice Cormier and a first-round draft pick.

New Jersey will continue its quest for the Atlantic Division title tonight, while Kovalchuk's old mates try to keep their fading playoff hopes alive.

The Devils have already clinched a postseason berth and enter Tuesday's action tied with Pittsburgh atop the Atlantic with four games left for both clubs. The Penguins are in action tonight against the visiting Washington Capitals.

Meanwhile, Atlanta is three points out of a playoff spot with just three games remaining. The Thrashers are 10th in the East and one point behind the ninth- seeded New York Rangers.

After dropping a shootout loss Friday against visiting Chicago, the Devils ended a three-game slide by posting a shutout victory Saturday in Raleigh. Martin Brodeur recorded his eighth shutout of the season by stopping all 26 shots he faced in lifting the Devils to the 4-0 triumph at RBC Center.

Zach Parise, Dainius Zubrus, Patrik Elias and David Clarkson all tallied a goal and an assist each for the Devils.

Brodeur recorded his first shutout since Jan. 20 and is now tied with Phoenix's Ilya Bryzgalov for the most in the league. The legendary Devils netminder also increased his NHL record in career shutouts to 109.

"It's a good game for us," said Devils coach Jacques Lemaire. "You know we played really well last night and that game last night just carried over into tonight. We played the same way we did last night so we're pleased with this."

The Devils are 20-16-3 as the guest this year and will close out their road schedule Thursday at Florida. New Jersey will cap its regular-season slate with a two-game homestand this weekend.

Atlanta has not played like a team worthy of a playoff spot down the stretch, losing five of its last seven games. The Thrashers enter tonight's action on a two-game slide, losing in regulation Thursday against Washington before dropping Saturday's overtime loss in Pittsburgh. Jordan Leopold scored 2:50 into OT, lifting the Penguins to the 4-3 decision at Mellon Arena.

Maxim Afinogenov, Rich Peverley and Tim Stapleton each registered a goal for the Thrashers. Johan Hedberg stopped 31-of-35 shots in the loss.

Atlanta defenseman Pavel Kubina missed his second straight game with an upper- body injury and is questionable for tonight's test. Kubina is second among Thrashers blueliners with 38 points this year.

The Thrashers are 18-15-6 as the host this year, but have lost three straight on home ice.

The Devils have taken two of three from Atlanta this year and have won eight of the last 11 meetings overall. New Jersey has also come out on top in its last five trips to Atlanta.

New York Rangers (36-32-10) at Buffalo Sabres (43-25-10), 7 p.m.

The New York Rangers will try to stay hot and help their playoff chances tonight, when they visit the first-place Buffalo Sabres for a battle at HSBC Arena.

New York is 5-0-1 in its last six games and the Rangers enter tonight two points behind Philadelphia for the eighth and final postseason berth in the Eastern Conference. The Flyers are in action tonight in Toronto.

Buffalo, meanwhile, has already clinched a playoff spot, but can win the Northeast Division title tonight. The Sabres lead second-place Ottawa by five points and Buffalo can clinch its first division title since 2006-07 with a win tonight. Buffalo could also claim the division if it gets a point this evening combined with any kind of Senators loss against Florida or if Ottawa simply loses in regulation to the Panthers.

The Sabres are also just one point behind New Jersey and Pittsburgh for the second seed in the East. The Devils and Penguins are tied atop the Atlantic Division and are both in action tonight.

Buffalo has taken two of three from New York this year and the Sabres have won five of the last seven encounters overall. The Rangers have notched three wins in their last five trips to western New York.

The Rangers won their third straight game Saturday in Florida, defeating the Panthers, 4-1, at BankAtlantic Center. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 19-of-20 shots and the Blueshirts scored four times in the third period to down Florida.

Marc Staal, Brandon Prust, Chris Drury and Marian Gaborik tallied during the final 20 minutes for the Rangers, who have exploded for 13 goals over their last three contests.

"We had to get some ugly goals and, except for Staal's goal, that's what we got," said Gaborik. "Get rebounds, get ugly. That's what we did in the third period."

Gaborik also had an assist and has tied a career high with 83 points in his first season with the Rangers. The former Minnesota Wild star also has 41 goals on the year, leaving him one goal shy of tying his personal best.

Tonight marks the final stop on a six-game road trip for New York, which is 4-0-1 on the swing. The Rangers are 20-15-4 as the guest this year.

On the injury front, New York has been playing without forwards Sean Avery, Ryan Callahan and Brian Boyle. Avery and Callahan are dealing with knee injuries, while Boyle has been out with a left ankle/foot problem. The players are questionable for tonight.

The Sabres ended March with three straight wins and closed the month with victories in seven out of eight games. However, Buffalo has started the new month with consecutive regulation losses and was shut out in its most recent contest.

Jaroslav Halak stopped 29 Buffalo shots on Saturday to lead Montreal to a 3-0 decision at Bell Centre. Ryan Miller was solid for the Sabres in the loss, turning aside 35-of-38 shots.

"There were patches of good energy but you have to gave Montreal some credit. They came hard and they outskated us. It's tough," Buffalo head coach Lindy Ruff said.

Buffalo forwards Thomas Vanek and Tim Connolly both missed Saturday's game with lower-body injuries and are expected to sit out tonight as well. Vanek has sat out the last four games, while Connolly has missed the last five.

Connolly is Buffalo's leading scorer with 65 points on the year and Vanek is tied for second on the club with 23 goals.

This evening's tilt marks the final home game of the regular season for Buffalo, which is 24-10-6 as the host this year. The Sabres will end the campaign on a three-game road trip, beginning Thursday in Boston.
