Illinois(-14) over Wyoming (1*)
- - A fresh regime facing a famished recent history fuels the intangible factors, buttressed by humid mismatches. Top play of Week 0.

Northwestern(+11) over Nebraska (1*)
- - Details and distractions of preparing for very unfamiliar territory, and I'll side here with HC Fitzgerald when no expectations clash with anything but.

Illinois(+1') over Indiana (1*)
- - I did very well betting against the dumpster fire that HC Tom Allen presided over last season. I DEFINITELY need to SEE more than a LITTLE something from Indiana before I make them a favorite to cut the legs out from under the trends of the Illinois program. . . Something different here. It has been exceedingly rare in 20+ years of posting plays at Madjacks when I posted a football wager on a "nothing special" contest more than 24 hours before the contest, except when I was going to be heading out of town or some other circumstance would make it difficult to post. But I like letting the Illini carry my cash here as much or more than any other play I will be making on the games Thursday or Friday, so up it goes, and in the lead off position. But I’m scared of going against such a deeply ingrained practice because when I have been early to post in the past, the results have not been very good. We shall see.

Penn State(-3)(-125) over Purdue (1*)
- - I really like the chances of Penn State being the team that shines in this lid lifter to the 2022 season.

West Virginia(+7') over Pittsburgh (1*)
- - My capping of Pitt under the current regime has been no better than 50/50 when I have thought I have found situations or games where they might exceed expectations, but has been much better at identifying times when I thought Pitt might not be as wary of their opponent as they needed to be. I feel much better about taking the dog than jumping on Pitt in this game.

New Mexico State(+36) over Minnesota (1*)
- - I certainly hope the visitor has got the debacle of 5 turnovers, myraid drops, and back-breaking penalties out of their system. I can hope it might be some evidence the Aggies had a little bit of a collective look ahead to this game, and/or they have a good coaching staff to bring out a lot of improvement between game 1 and game 2. . Regardless, I was leaning this direction, before reading some in my research about the bad blood between the coaches, notwithstanding the generally nice things Jerry Kill says about the place he is returning to tonight ("”I just think sometimes ego gets carried away and when he went into Minnesota and treated the people the way he treated my guys, and telling them he had to go in and completely change the culture, it was a bad culture and bad people. He made it sound like we didn't know what we were doing and I took it personal," Kill said. Fleck was hired by Minnesota in 2017 to replace Tracy Claeys, a longtime Kill assistant who took over the Golden Gophers in 2015 after Kill stepped down due to health reasons. Despite some modest success, Claeys was fired in 2017 a few weeks after the team threatened to boycott the Holiday Bowl.”). At that point I said hell yes, my lean is now a play.

I really like the card today. Stepping up my stakes. See what happens.

Minnesota(-3) over Michigan State (1.5*)
- - Fundamentals and matchups; situational factors; line value; trends; contrarian; etc. Lots of approaches for capping football . . . Amazing shift in perception here, as the line must have been Michigan State favored if this game was played last week, so can’t be much value with the visitor. Regardless, everything Minnesota has done well up to this point has been building for this opportunity, and they will carry my cash.

Tennessee(-10') over Florida (1.5*)
- - Florida has won 16 of the last 17 against their rival. I don’t see the visitor holding back the dam burst.

Kansas(-7) over Duke (1.5*)
- - Simply put, seeing is believing. Now, after what I’ve seen, I’ll have to see it before I believe Duke is the danger paying a visit to Lawrence.

Stanford(+13') over Washington (1.5*)
- - My takeaway from the Stanford game against USC was that Stanford, despite adding like only one portal transfer, looked nothing like the backsliding teams of recent years. I think Stanford is going to be a danger after having to wait two weeks to get the taste of the USC flow out of their collective system.

Texas(-7) over Texas Tech (1.5*)
- -

Utah(-15') over Arizona State (1.5*)
- - This is the spot for Arizona State to rise up and turn my designs of making money by going against them as a fool’s errand.

Arkansas(+2) over Texas A&M (1*)
- - The Hogs under HC Pittman look like they are having lots of fun going up and down the field. HC Jimbo has stolid A&M focused on bonding in a foxhole. On the big stage at Jerry’s World, I’m very much liking the live dog.

Baylor(+3)(-125) over Iowa State (1*)
- - Wrong team is favored, IMO.

Clemson(-7') over Wake Forest (1*)
- - Clemson will be ready, maybe that won’t be enough.

Rutgers(+8) over Iowa (1*)
- - The disjointed 7 hour performance against Nevada did nothing in my mind to answer questions about this Hawkeye season. Now Ferentz will go to Rutgers like it’s a business trip. On the other side this has been lining up as a huge spot for Rutgers since the first of the newly configured two a day practices this summer. I hope Iowa escapes by winning the epic battle of punters.

North Carolina(-2') over Notre Dame (1*)
- -

Michigan(-17) over Maryland (1*)
- -

Oklahoma(-13') over Kansas State (1*)
- -

Cincinnati(-16') over Indiana (1*)
- - Cinci was my cash cow for two years in the Desmond Ritter era, and in the process my eyes were on their games most every week. Now I’ve had a few weeks to form some impressions on the new look Bearcats, and what I’ve seen is a team that plays like Cinci light, with the same attacking tempo and frequent miscues, but without the depth and QB eraser of prior editions to make the other side pay. But on the whole, Cinci has looked stronger than I expected, and I see this as a good spot to show that to be the case.

At this point I’m saving only one game for tonight.

USC(-5') over Oregon State (1*)
- - The one game left on my card that I was holding out on posting. On 9/17 I posted that to start the season I had my eyes on Oregon State as being likely to thrive under the radar, and they have shown plenty. I still fully expect Oregon State will have a very fine season, but I don't see that featuring a heart pounding finish against USC that pretty near everyone feels is one of the plays of the day.

Arizona(+3') over California (1*)
- - I've had hopes for Arizona and they have been delivering. I thought Cal was intriguing with their huge effort in South Bend, but after that Super Bowl showcase the Bears will need to show even more moxie to prevail in this game, and the points offer all the value I can ask for, so I'm biting.
