Updated: 1:26 p.m. ET Nov. 12, 2004MIAMI - Police used a stun gun on a 6-year-old boy in his principal?s office because he was wielding a piece of glass and threatening to hurt himself, officials said Thursday.

The boy, who was not identified, was shocked with 50,000 volts on Oct. 20 at Kelsey Pharr Elementary School.

Principal Maria Mason called 911 after the child broke a picture frame in her office and waved a piece of glass, holding a security guard back.

When two Miami-Dade County police officers and a school officer arrived, the boy had already cut himself under his eye and on his hand.

The officers talked to the boy without success. When the boy cut his own leg, one officer shocked him with a Taser and another grabbed him to prevent him from falling, police said.

He was treated and taken to a hospital, where he was committed for psychiatric evaluation.

?By using the Taser, we were able to stop the situation, stop him from hurting himself,? police spokesman Juan DelCastillo told The Miami Herald.

So what are you saying? I saw it on the news Fri. night and read about it in the Sun Sentinel (Lauderdale/Miami) paper . i don't know what the big deal is. Another article i read said that the mother didn't like how the situation was handled. :cursin: She said the cops should of handled the situation better. Well if your son was not insane and going crazy such actions would not have to be taken. The cops were trying to help the kid and yet the mother has the nuts to complain. to me,the point is that the police are in a "catch 22" situation....if they take some sort of action to keep this little numbskull from mutilating himself,they are wrong....

if they allow him to carve himself up like a christmas turkey,they are wrong....

in a certain segment of this population`s skewed logic,the police are the bad guys.....i`m talking the aclu among others...

until they save somebody`s ass....or a family member`s ass....

that is,unless some scummy lawyer can convince them to sue....

Gotta agree with the concensus, here. Police were in a "no win " situation. I mean, in addition to hurting himself more, he could have thrown it at someone and taken an eye out. This is what is basically wrong with today's educational system, the tail wags the dog theory. No one even stops to think about the time and rescources that are constantly being taken away from good students who are ereally trying to learn something..........by misfits, jokers, laggards and even thugs.
The kid was more of a danger than the 50k volts.
