In answer to your question. The pull taps at one time were in the grocier stores. You could win mainly hams, chickens, pop things like that. No Beer, bozz or ciggs. That was against the law and the law watched. Once in a while they would have speical prize bag full of grociers. But it had to total under 5 bucks. But with bread 10cents a loaf and meat of many types 35 to 45 cents apound you get the idea. 5 bucks went along way. This was all back in the 1950's. They also had pull taps called Vegas boards in the bars. They were like the first slot machines. 3 of akind was worth so much money. With top prize of 3 bars 50 bucks. Well you never heard of to many 50 buck winners as im sure you would guess.
As for lines on games. First I ever saw that was 1958 I was 16 years old and not allowed to know of or do such things. How ever by older 1st cousin who was like a brother to me taught me what he was doing. It was mainly the NFL then. He was always playing these 4 and 5 team parlays. Said was hard to win but was more fun then streight betting. I was not sure what he meant. I new and understood fast after I got started myself in 1962. But you know to this day just for fun and not counting from my Bank. I play a 3 teamer for 15 bucks. And I must say I pull just as dam hard for that as my other plays. And have a smile when I hit one for those reason. I think of my cousin gone now 8 years. And his complaining when none of those parlays would hit. But when one did you thought he won a new car.
I also got to know the business inside out in the 60's running for the big book in town. I got my 10% and some times 15% if he had a good week. I also started to learn from him some of this stuff controling your money. As we now say M/M. I also learn the law did not like what we were doing. They had a big investigation in to gambling on sports here in 71. I never thought much about it all till then. When you think you may be going to jail you listen up real well. We never found out for sure who gave us up. But I have ahunch when I found out the handle this book was taking in already in 71. I think someone would have gotten hurt bad. He was running book for half the county. That was close to 400 grand a weekend. And here in are small area that was very big. Scared the chit out of me. I gave up running at once. He understood and we remained friends till he died in 1992. So there it is. Sure I forgot some but you get the idea.

Fletch remember the old Thunderbird. Believe if I remember right my old friend the book. He would call someone at the Tunderbird every Thursday to get the line. He walked about a block away from his shop and use a pay phone. Would call back Saturdays to see where the swings were if any. I think he also had a contact at the old Vegas Club or some such name to always do a double check. I wish he was alive now so we could tak more about it. Hell I did not want to know much back in the 60's early 70's. Beter off being blind. I ever get to Vegas and meet you we can talk for hours.

the ones my dad did were in the bar so i see what you are saying they called it a tip board, the thunder bird is still here no casino it is a dump being ready to be tore down bob stupick bought it a few year back don't no why maybe for the land but the rent out by the week for like 150 it is very bad, the vegas club is still here i go there alot on freemont street it is one of the best places i like to go old but clean and looks like it did in the 50's and 60's it is really neat to go in there and just see what it was like back then, much better treatment and feel at home over the big mega resorts. They treat you like a person not a number.

Yes tip board was another named used. In fact many bars still doing that today. Either for numbers on Football games or WS even NBA. But most like the slot machine kind. Win 10, 15 bucks up to 200 now. But you dont here about to many 200 winners. In fact you dont here to much about any 50 and above winners. The Vega Club still there. Never was in it. Will make sure next trip out when ever that is to stop there. I like those smaller friendly places.
