neither, just a nice new razor and hot water with steam, doing this for years on a pretty thick beard, but not Italian 5 o'clock thick.

Hot water and new razor as well. Never found a need for the foam or gel.

On the course!
You don't need a new razor.

When your razor feels worn down, push it back and forth over a pair of blue jeans. (Don't pull it as if you are shaving, go the opposite direction!) Do this about 10 times each way, and you have a sharp razor!

I use one blade every 3 months or so.
