a gem mint grade is incredibly difficult. not only is the condition of all the corners, etc. highly scrutinised, but the surface is also looked at very closely as is the centering of the card. most of the cards made back in the day are very seldom perfectly centered. even now it is not always the case. it also depends on what grading company awards the grade.

I am not sure what that guy was talking about, but this is a MJ rookie with an incredibly tough grade.

you will very seldom see a card graded higher than BGS 9.5

they do award 10's occasionally but it is by far the toughest grade to attain. a BGS 10 and a 10 from another company like PSA are not the same.

a BGS 9.5 is incredibly good for that card.

this is the MJ rookie with a PSA 10, which is also a very good grade. PSA 10 and BGS 9.5 are typically seen as the same, but obviously a 10 on an older card is a bit different.

there is a reason this card would have been sent to PSA and not BGS.

this is about as good as it gets for an MJ rookie. I imagine if there is one out there, a BGS 10 would sell for slightly more but couldnt see it topping 20k.

am thinking perhaps the guy meant 10k and not 100k.

either way, you made a great investment at 500 bucks. whenever you do decide to sell, it would probably behoove you to take a good look at the MJ and maybe get it graded because it could be the difference between hundreds and thousands of dollars.

The corners on mine are perfect but it isn't centered perfectly....

This is what the guy was talking about.

That is too bad about the centering. It would definitely hurt the grade but the fact is it's really quite rare to find one that is centered.

That article seems to be a few years old. But I certainly have no doubt it's true. The BGS 10 is a very tough grade. What's more shocking to me is that in that article it says a BGS 9.5 sold for over 76k in 2003. Today you can pick one up for under 5k. It sounds like that was the first 9.5 to sell but wow what a price change in 10 years.

Yeah. I was a little skeptical after he told me, but when I looked it up, I found that article and was pretty shocked to see that price. I will hold on to it, for the mere fact I'm a huge fan and it's kinda cool having one in my possession. I think cards are like a lot of things, prices ebb and flow. Just like back in the day this prices bottomed out and then made a huge comeback. I think it'll make another comeback someday.....Hopefully!

I ran into a guy who has a card shop and he told me the Jordan rookie card is still fetching top dollar. He said a #10 grade mint card recently sold for $100K. That's pretty cool because I have that whole set with his rookie card in mint condition. I paid $500 for the set back in the 90's. It's the only thing I have worth a damn. I still like the Cal Ripken Jr "fuckstick" card. I laugh every time I see it....

I've got the Fleer Jordan Rookie card but it's not graded. I need to get it graded, it's perfect. I went through a phase of collecting Jordan cards about 10-15 years ago. I have over 1,000 different Jordan cards. Probably around 2,000-2,500 if you count duplicates. I was planning on selling them for big bucks in the future but most of them have decreased in value like some of you stated earlier in this thread. My favorite card is a triple jersey card of Jordan, Kobe, and Lebron.

the problem with collecting as it is now is that there is so much of everything being made. Even if you are collecting Michael Jordan. you are likely not going to see his prices hike up anytime soon, if they ever do again, because of all the stuff still being made. he has a contract with Upper Deck and they are going to get every penny they can out of that deal by producing products with him in it every single year. he is still signing autographs and his memorabilia is still being used. there is plenty of it still being produced.

the same goes for any other star right now. if it is a rookie card, that is an entirely different story, but for the most part the market is just saturated with the same things every single year.

if you open a box of cards in 2013 and pull a Michael Jordan autograph, that is great, but the value on this is going to do nothing but drop gradually because the next year there will be just as many produced. It isnt a rookie year and there is nothing special about it so while yes it is still an MJ autograph, it is not going to skyrocket in value.

the stuff that does hold its value well and even go up is hall of famer stuff. especially guys that dont sign often or are deceased because there isnt much new stuff being made from these guys. they arent still actively signing and what memorabilia there is left of them is very limited.

there is always a pretty good market for the old tobacco baseball cards though, which date around 1910. there is never going to be any more of that stuff so what is out there is it. everytime a collector buys up a piece that is one less piece on the market. that is why the T206 Honus Wagner is the holy grail of sports cards and is worth millions.

guy has some baseball and football cards from the late 1980's to 2013. Said he has thousands and he wants $800 for the collection. What do you think the collection is worth? Im thinking he has a couple thousand he said hes been collecting for years. He said he has all players.
Most likely worthless. Read a grantland article recently . Dude thought he had thousands. Was offered nothing. Dead industry

Once he finds out they are worthless in terms of $, tell him to search for this program........

There is a great option for what to do with them and it is tax deductible. Check out a charity called Cards2Kids. Upper Deck works with them a lot. They repackage cards and share them with deserving kids in children's hospitals and Boys & Girls Clubs.

Almost everyone has good advice... have collected all my life...stopped in the mid-80's when I realized how saturated the market became...Donruss,Fleer,Topps,etc all the update series,etc...I have said this before...had over 30,000 Juan Samuel cards...bought in bulk back then...being a Philly fan thought he was the next Willie Mays....I was going to retire on my $300-$400 investment...those cards are worth less then 1 cents...his rookie a little more but the 30,000 I have wasn't his rookie year...oh well....I got rid of most of them over the years..as a principal of a high school I gave them out as passes back to classes,or get out of jail cards....teachers loved it,students loved it...when a juan samuel card was given to a teacher they knew it was from me..they would rip it up or destroy them...some kids try to buy some cards but they were Mets or Dodgers Samuels....I did this at 3 schools....at one school we had an over active security guard...students nick named him " rambo"...he was a pain in the ass...loved catching kids doing things wrong...would brag about busting kids...hated kids...so on april fools day we made up a new student named Juan Samuel and made up a fake schedule....we told rambo he was cutting the 1st two periods...gave him Juan's schedule and off he went rambo..think he said I''ll find him...we had all a few teachers that said to rambo..." was just here...went to the bathroom..went to the cafe cutting, seen in the parking lot, down by the gym..out on the softball field,etc...we were doing it on the radio also...Rambo was chasing Juan all over for about an hour...I would call on the radio and say " did you get him yet"...rambo would respond "I'm right on his tail,Mr. Box..don't worry I'll get him"....we let it go on for awhile and then told rambo to come back to the main office..we found him...when he arrived to my office i showed him my baseball card and then he realized the name Juan was the same person I gave out many passes too....we all laughed and he was fine with it realizing it was April fools....but the best part of this was as " rambo left my office he said" You know i always get my man"... there have been 2 more principals since I left that school...and rambo is still there driving everyone nuts...
