Football Handicapping Methods/Tools?

Football is here (at least preseason) and soon it will be here for real. As I head into the season I was looking at some of my angles for handicapping because I review them every year to see if I should change things up.

This is a post I put up every year and every year I get great feedback that helps newbies as well as the grizzled veterans.

I look forward to the feedback:

So I ask this---what are some of the things that you use to handicap football?

For instance, many pro handicappers use per stats--do you? If so what do you use and how do you use them? Some people I asked use pure math and just averages based on deviations. They can go crazy with numbers but swear by it. If so what stats do you think are the best?

Others use stats as a guide and match up stats like yards per pass etc.

Math
Many people use math and formulas to predict results, stat geeks do you agree?

What about consensus?
Some folks I know swear by it and use it almost exclusively. Others think its bunk and controlled by the site that offers the information.

Newspapers(Blogs/team sites)?
DO you read the daily news on the teams you bet on? Or think its mostly hype? since the local press love their hometown team.

Services?
Do you just hate the leg work so look for free service plays or use them like a consensus and fade them?

What about trends?
Some say you can make them say whatever you want by picking the ones that suit your need so they are junk, while others use them in every day handicapping.

Line movement?
This one to me is the most interesting. Some will say they follow the line because sharps beat it up in the first couple days and they want to follow the sharps. Others say the public move the line and so getting on it late or agianst it, in this case, is the way to go.

Finally, is there anything I missed that you use? Or any angles I forgot like systems?

Let's hear what you think.

i always remind myself every year , everything i can cap on a game books already know so for ME to much info will mess me up ... i like watching getting a feel and shoot from the hip...

i also try to play as little game as possible i can which can be tuff , but best way to win a high %

the nfl hoping to keep it one or two games a week .

college i usually play 6 games a saturday for the first two maybe 3 weeks at 1 unit to make me some cash to hit on a big play in week 4 after that its one or two plays rest of season.

this works for me dont know if its any good info for you . been doing this way for years...

Over the years I have tried all kinds of methods.

* Fundamental Capping
* Situational
* Technical
* Systems ( not mine )
* Tailing people
* Services
All I know is fundamental capping gave me some success but had to be willing to spend time doing my home work & stick with college ball only. That my 2 cents for what is worth.

I have a buddy of mine that does the same thing. He wins more times than naught and he does it by using his gut--it's not science, but it works :142smilie

Mover--Your right handicapping can take alot of work and it is a grind, but I appreciate the input. I used a basic style of capping that I got from basically gathering info all over the net, but when I researched some professional cappers they almost all had stats that they favored or even formulas they used..

I barely have used stats in the past and was curious what others used....to me it seemed simple, pick a team with good stats and you will get the better team, but the Chargers proved you could have good stats and not win ball games.

Thanks for your input

JT I wish it was that simple to look at the stats & pull the trigger. I was taught to look for strong rushing teams over weak defenses especially in college & to always choose defense over offense.
