Pete is a fellow official with me for lacrosse in upstate NY. He refs football, basketball and lacrosse to make ends meet for his three kids . He is a great guy and does not deserve this.

Remember this next time you lose you cool over a sporting event.

A football official who was struck in the face with a helmet has been released from the hospital.

Sgt. Mark Simmons of the Rochester Police Department said Pete McCabe was struck in the face with a football helmet during an altercation after a semipro football game at Edgerton Park on Saturday. The incident occurred about 9 p.m.

McCabe of Lakeville, Livingston County, was one of several officials at the game, Simmons said. He suffered serious injuries to his face, including an unattached nose and broken bones, and was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Simmons said McCabe is expected to undergo facial reconstruction surgery Friday.

Officers believe one of the players attacked McCabe, then ran from the scene, Simmons said. Officers are searching for that man and are investigating the altercation.

Officials,

Fellow official, Pete McCabe, was seriously injured this weekend after he was hit it the face with a football helmet following a game he was officiating. The doctor told Pete that if he hadn't flinched at the last second the blow would have killed him. The coach and other players of this "semi-pro" team would not give the authorities the name of the assailant.

I spoke with Pete this morning and he seems in good spirits. He will have surgery later this week and his jaw will be wired shut for a month. He doen't think he will be able to officiate lacrosse this spring, but we'll cross our fingers. Please keep Pete and his family in your prayers.

Pete refs football, basketball and lacrosse. With my 3 kids, I see Pete reffing all year long. He's a great person and a great official.

Our organization will continue to support Pete throughout this tough time. While GVLOA will be sending a gift and card, here is his contact info if you'd like to send a card or email.

I will keep you posted on his improved condition.

Thanks,

John
