THE TIPSTER: The Mariners are just about out of answers as to why Freddy Garcia has struggled so much in the second half.
Garcia, who starts tonight against the Rangers, was 11-5 and a member of the AL All-Star team, but since then he's just 4-5. In the process, his earned-run average has zoomed from 3.44 to 4.39.
Since his most recent start in Kansas City on Friday, Garcia has worked with pitching coach Bryan Price, trying to mask his delivery.
"Bryan has been working with Freddy with his takeaway," Piniella said, referring to the point at which Garcia pulls the ball out of his glove before throwing it.
"We're doing that just in case Freddy had been tipping his pitches," Piniella said. "I'm not sure -- he might have been. But regardless of that, Freddy just needs to make good pitches."
The six-month anniversary of the attack was observed on March 11 when two beams of light illuminated the sky above Manhattan from near the site of the World Trade Center towers. The temporary memorial was a nightly occurrence until April 13.
Fans react as a giant American flag is displayed on the field prior to Monday's game between the Dodgers and Padres in Los Angeles.
