In a move that could be described as politically condiment -- er, correct -- the maker of French's mustard recently issued a news release to assure war-worried consumers that the only thing French about its mustard is its name.
The origin of the yellow spread was the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, not the country that opposes the U.S.-led war against Iraq.
The Washington Times ridiculed French's news release: "What's next? Is Betty Crocker going to hit the talk-show circuit to remind us that German chocolate cake isn't really from Germany, another country that opposes the war?"
There has been no similar news release from Golden Valley-based General Mills Inc., which, in addition to Betty Crocker cake mixes, makes the Pillsbury Crusty French Loaf.
