Pat Hill Quotes From Monday's Press Conference
The Bulldogs' sixth-year head coach talks about how the team is going to regroup after a lopsided loss last week at Boise State.

Oct. 21, 2002

On Boise State game
"The film bared out what everybody got to see on TV. We got physically dominated and outplayed in every phase, from coaching to special teams to everything else. It was a tough pill to swallow, but like everything else in life you grow from those experiences."

"I've got to give credit to Boise State. I've been in coaching 29 years and that was about as well a coached and executed game plan as I've seen. I felt that we were well-prepared going into the game, but obviously we didn't take the classroom and practice to the field in a big game. Once the game got into a scoring game, that played into their hands, not ours. We had two very small openings to get back into it, but were shut down both times."

On going back to live hitting during practices this week
"It's going to get us back to tackling better. [Against Boise State] is the poorest we've tackled in a long time. I think the kids have to feel the pads on them. I think if you practice to [back] off, then that's the speed you start playing in. When you go up to tackle, you're used to a tag-off speed."

"I've never changed practice, until this year, on how we do things as far as Tuesday practices. We're going to go back to live cut-drills. We haven't done live-cut drills in four weeks and that's something I've done every Tuesday since I've been here. I got soft and got away from the things that have made us what we are. I'm not going to worry about the young men that are hurt. I'm going to worry about the ones that are healthy and make them better. If we're going to make a run at a bowl game for the fourth time in a row then we're going to have to start playing the way we're use to playing and that's hard and full speed."

On regrouping from the Boise State loss
"I've said this before, that players are a lot more resilient than fans and coaches. The players were humiliated and humbled in the [Boise State] game and they know they missed tackles and got dominated physically on both sides of the ball. They want to have a chance to re-establish themselves. We haven't gone through many games like that in six years. In the time I've been here we've had maybe three or four games like that. That's about 70 games in that span."

"That kind of exposure puts a bad label on you and we need to earn our reputation back. If we win this week we're back over .500 again. Then we have a bye week, which will allow us to regroup and get some people back. I don't know which people that will be, but like I said, I'm not going to worry about the ones that are hurt. I'm going to worry about the ones that are healthy and they're going to play the way our expectations are as a team."

On defending Hawai`i's run-and-shoot offense
"We'll be more in our nickel package with [McGill] at linebacker. Hawai'i is going to spread the field and we're going to have to get guys involved in the coverage part of it. Depth is very important [against Hawai'i]. We're going to have to keep the defense off the field. We really don't have many choices."

On rebounding after a lopsided loss
"I think it's about having confidence. We have great confidence in the scheme and in the players and coaches. We just have had a lot of little things we've had to overcome this year. Every team has their own set of problems that they have to overcome. As long as the players are aware of the things that we have to overcome then we can take our weaknesses and make them into strengths."

"The players have to believe in the plan we're putting on the field and execute it. I'm never going to say we can't do this and we can't do that. I believe we can do whatever we set our minds to. Each week the hard part is the consistency and making the little changes. We have to make a plan that protects our guys and gives them a chance to win. We're going to do that and our players understand that."

Fresno State (4-4, 2-1 WAC) vs. Hawai`i (5-2, 3-1 WAC)
Date: Friday, Oct. 25
Kickoff: 6 p.m. PDT
Site: Fresno, Calif
Stadium: Bulldog Stadium (41,031)

This Week
A week after suffering their worst loss since 1996, the Bulldogs look to bounce back against Hawai`i in a game with bowl ramifications. The Bulldogs and Warriors hook up Friday at 6 p.m. in a contest that will be televised nationally by ESPN2. It marks the seventh time in 2002 Fresno State has played on national TV. Hawai'i (5-2, 4-1 WAC) is currently second in the conference while the Bulldogs (4-4, 2-1 WAC) are tied for third.

All-Time vs. Hawai'i
Fresno State owns an 18-15-1 lead in a series that has been dominated by the home team. Of Fresno State's 18 wins against the Warriors, 11 have come in Fresno, where the Bulldogs own a 11-3-1 all-time advantage. UH has not defeated Fresno State on the road since 1973 and has never won at Bulldog Stadium, where the Bulldogs are 4-0-1 all-time against Hawai'i. The two teams have alternated wins and losses against each other every year since 1995.

Last Time vs. Hawai'i
HONOLULU - Oct. 26, 2001: Nick Rolovich hit Ashley Lelie in the corner of the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown with 13 seconds left, giving Hawai'i a 38-34 victory over the Bulldogs. David Carr threw for 400 yards but couldn't help stop the Warriors from racking up 22 points in the fourth quarter, helping them battle back from a 27-13 second half deficit. The loss dropped Fresno State to 1-10 at Aloha Stadium since 1967.

WAC Attack
Although the Bulldogs have the most wins (30 overall, 19 WAC) among WAC teams over the last three-plus seasons, they have just one WAC title to show for it (1999). Fresno State was predicted to win the WAC in 2001 but ended up tying for second. This season, the Bulldogs were selected third in the WAC media preseason poll, trailing Boise State and Louisiana Tech in the voting. Fresno State is the only WAC team to play in bowl games in each of the last three seasons. The Bulldogs were also the WAC leaders last season in NFL draft picks (4), first-team All-WAC selections (6) and Academic All-WAC selections (9). Fresno State returns more first-team All-WAC players (4) than any other team in the league.

Anybody, Anywhere, on Any Day
Friday's contest is Fresno State's fifth of the year on a day other than Saturday. The Bulldogs are 2-2 in such games, the last coming Friday at Boise State. Including last year, Fresno State is 5-4 in non-Saturday games, and all but one has been on national TV.

All Banged Up
Fresno State has suffered a rash of injuries this year, but one group that seems to have been especially hard hit is the defensive line. Three of the Bulldogs' top defensive ends - Brian Morris, Clarence Denning and Ryan Smith - are all out for the rest of the year, Morris and Smith with injuries and Denning because he quit the team. Against Colorado State, star defensive end Nick Burley fractured his left thumb, but he will continue to play with a cast. The defense also lost Kendall Edwards, the team's best cornerback, for the year during the San Diego State game with a torn ACL.

On the Bright Side
The news on the injury front isn't all bad for Fresno State. Linebacker Sam Williams made a return to the lineup last week after missing three games with a separated shoulder. Tight end Mark Wood may come back against Hawai'i after missing two games with a sprained knee. Also a possibility to return is tackle Joe Schey, who sat out the Boise State game with a sprained knee. The senior had started 31 games in a row prior to the injury.

Bulldogs vs. the BCS Conferences
Fresno State is 4-4 in its last eight games against teams from BCS Conferences. However, the Bulldogs have not had the same degree of success in 2002 as they did last year. The team has lost all three games against BCS opponents this season, including a two-point nailbiter at No. 23 Wisconsin and a four-point loss at No. 13 Oregon. The Sept. 21 game at Oregon State game was the final contest against a BCS school in the regular season. Since Pat Hill has taken over at Fresno State, the Bulldogs have played 17 games against BCS opponents. Hill lost the first nine games against BCS teams, all on the road, by an average margin of 14 points. Four of those were decided by less than a touchdown and one was in overtime (at Oregon in 1997).

Over the Hill
Fresno State is hoping a return to home this week can get them back on the winning track after Friday's humbling loss to Boise State. Under Pat Hill, the Bulldogs are 27-4 at home and 20-2 in WAC home games with wins in 17 of the last 18 home conference games. Only two WAC teams have ever won at Bulldog Stadium: San Diego State in 1997 and Boise State in 2001. Hill's .871 home winning percentage is the best in Fresno State history of coaches with more than three years' experience. His conference home winning percentage of .909 is also best in school history. The Bulldogs' four home losses over the last five-plus seasons is only one defeat more than the number of home losses Fresno State suffered in 1996, the season before Hill took over as head coach.

Tough to Beat at Home
Fresno State's loss to Boise State last year snapped its 17-game home winning streak, at the time the nation's third longest. However, since Pat Hill took over, Fresno State has still won 27 of 31 games at Bulldog Stadium, including 23 of its last 25. Since Hill took over prior to the 1997 season, the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents by a combined 1,106-564 for an average margin of victory of 36-18. In addition, the Bulldogs are drawing well, averaging 38,603 fans per game since 1997. Fresno State sold over 30,000 season tickets for the 2002 season, the third consecutive season the Bulldogs have surpassed the 30,000 mark. In the 2001 home opener, Fresno State established a Bulldog Stadium attendance record by attracting 42,410 for a game against Oregon State. The Bulldogs then broke and tied the attendance mark when 42,881 invaded the stadium the final five home games of the year.

Pinegar Presses On
Paul Pinegar continued his learning process last week. The redshirt freshman quarterback passed for a career-high 371 yards and three touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions and was sacked four times. The Woodland, Calif., native has started six games in 2002 - including the last four in a row - and has racked up 1,604 yards passing along with 12 touchdowns. He has also thrown just five interceptions. In his first six games as Fresno State's starter in 2000, David Carr had very similar numbers. He passed for 1,266 yards, had nine TD passes and eight interceptions before becoming one of the best in program history.

Depth Chart Changes
Due to injuries and position changes, Fresno State's depth chart has seen some alterations over the past three weeks. Most notable is at strong safety, where Bryce McGill moved to outside linebacker prior to the Rice game to fill in at that injury depleted position. Redshirt freshman James Sanders, second on the team in tackles, has replaced McGill at strong safety. Also moving up on the depth chart is walk-on freshman Garrett McIntyre, who has seen significant time at defensive tackle. With season-ending injuries to defensive ends Brian Morris and Ryan Smith, redshirt freshman Doug Roush has stepped in as the backup.

Block Party
Fresno State's special teams have thrust themselves into the nation's elite in blocking punts and kicks. Since Pat Hill took over as head coach prior to the 1997, the Bulldogs have blocked 36 punts and kicks, including a field goal Oct. 4 against Colorado State, helping the Bulldogs to a 32-30 victory over the 22nd-ranked Rams. Following is a breakdown of Fresno State's kick blocking prowess since 1997:

Blocked Blocked
Punts PAT & FG Total
1997 3 1 4
1998 2 4 6
1999 4 6 10
2000 3 5 7
2001 5 1 6
2002 0 2 2
--------------------------------
Totals 17* 19 36
* includes instances when Fresno State tackled the punter before he could get kick away.

Adam Jennings' 59-yard punt return for a touchdown against Colorado State has been one of the season's most electrifying moments.

Many Happy Returns
Fresno State's special teams have established themselves as one of the nation's best units. Not only are the Bulldogs exceptional at blocking kicks, but they are also a threat to put points on the board every time they take the field. Since Pat Hill took over in 1997, Fresno State has scored 12 touchdowns on special teams and has racked up three safeties. Below is a breakdown of the Bulldogs' special teams scoring history:

6 punt returns for TDs (last: Oct. 4, 2002, by Adam Jennings vs. Colorado State)
2 kickoff returns for TDs (last: Sept. 8, 2001, by Bernard Berrian at Wisconsin)
4 blocked punts/FGs returned for TDs (last: Dec. 1, 2001, by Rodney Wright vs. Utah State)
3 team safeties (last: Oct. 4, 2002, vs. Colorado State)
Taking the Attendance to Another Level
After showing up in record numbers in 2000, Fresno State fans got 2001 off to a rocking start when 42,410 crammed Bulldog Stadium (capacity 41,031) to watch FS defeat Oregon State 44-24 in the home opener. The fans continued to invade the stadium the rest of the year, with a record 42,881 watching each of the five remaining home games. All told, Bulldog Stadium was filled at 104.32 of capacity last year, placing FS second in the west and seventh in the nation in percent of capacity filled. For 2002, Fresno State sold more than 30,000 season tickets for the third consecutive season. Following is a breakdown of where the Bulldogs rated regionally and in the WAC in percent of stadium capacity filled last year:
