That play-in game, it's something best avoided. Basketball teams don't often make it from there to anywhere. At the Mountain West Conference Tournament in two weeks, the winner of that No. 8-No. 9 matchup will run smack into the top seed less than 24 hours later.

Fresno State has a chance to avoid the Mountain West men's play-in game, but only if it can find a way to beat Air Force on Saturday night at the Save Mart Center on senior night, the final home game for Kevin Foster, Garrett Johnson, Jerry Brown and Brad Ely.

"Huge game," Coach Rodney Terry said. "It's a huge game for seeding for both of us. They're playing for something, and we're still playing for something. It's a pivotal game."

It's also pretty simple for the Bulldogs, who are 9-18 and, at 3-11, in last place in the conference. To have a chance to move up to the No. 7 seed, they have to get at least four wins, passing Nevada (12-15, 3-10) and hoping to tie Wyoming (18-10, 4-10) in the process.

The Cowboys end the season with games at New Mexico and against Colorado State, which stand 1-2 now in the conference. In a tie for seventh, Fresno State is likely to win a tie-breaker, which starts with head-to-head competition (they split with both Nevada and Wyoming) and then going to the best record against the conference champion on down until the tie is broken.

The Bulldogs were swept by the Lobos and Rams, and Wyoming lost the first matchups. But Fresno State has a victory over UNLV, which is in third place and has a good chance to stay there with games remaining at Nevada and at home against Boise State and the Bulldogs.

San Diego State, in fourth place, has games remaining against Air Force and at Boise State.

None of that matters if the Bulldogs can't get a fourth victory -- they have two chances, against Air Force and then at UNLV to close out the regular season.

"Coach talks about it all the time," said guard Tyler Johnson, who is leading the Bulldogs with 12.0 points per game, 13.2 in conference play.

"Just the urgency, there's something that we're still playing for. To play four games and try to get into the NCAA Tournament, I mean, it's not impossible, but you're just making your road that much harder. But if you get into that seventh spot you have that extra day to get situated, another day for prep, and you put yourself in a lot better position."

Air Force sticking with routine as it heads back out on the road -

Dave Pilipovich might pack his bag a bit differently and opt for a different seat on the plane, but he?ll keep any changes to his preparation strictly on that kind of superstitious level.

Pilipovich said everything else for Air Force ? including its starting lineup ? will remain the same as it again tries to tackle its road woes with a game Saturday at Fresno State.

?We just have to have high energy,? Pilipovich said. ?We can?t come out like at Boise and put ourselves in an 11-0 hole.?

To ensure fresh legs to boost that energy, Air Force (16-10, 7-6 Mountain West) took Wednesday off following Tuesday?s home win over Wyoming and practiced for only a short time on Thursday.

Other than that, the Falcons will simply hope something clicks better this time on the road ? where it has lost seven of its past eight games.

Against teams Air Force has played at home and the road this year, the Falcons have been on average 18 points better at home.

The way Fresno State (9-18, 3-11) looked on Wednesday, losing just 74-67 at Colorado State, the home court advantage may not even be necessary.

?They?re big and they have a lot of length inside, even though they rely on their perimeter scorers,? said Pilipovich, whose team has defeated only Wyoming on the road during the conference season.

Freshmen big men Tanner Giddings (6-foot-10) and Robert Upshaw (7-0) combined for just three points and three rebounds over 27 minutes in Fresno State?s 62-50 loss at Air Force on Jan. 30. Since then the Bulldogs have also added 6-9, 240-pound Kansas transfer Braeden Anderson, who scored 12 points with six rebounds at San Diego State in his second game after gaining eligibility on Feb. 6 and has been in the starting lineup ever since.

To combat Fresno inside, Pilipovich said he may play sophomores DeLovell Earls and Kamryn Williams at the same time. Williams and Earls combined for 37 points against Wyoming on Tuesday.

Pilipovich also said center Taylor Broekhuis, slowed by ankle and toe injuries, will continue to start.

?Taylor?s not the same with this toe,? Pilipovich said. ?But if he can get up on two feet, he?s going to start.?

The one thing Pilipovich said he would alter from the last road game was his motivational tactics. Against Boise State, he emphasized how important the game was to the Air Force?s NCAA Tournament hopes. He felt that might have backfired.

This game might be equally important to the Falcons? chances of getting into the NIT. They are currently ranked No. 64 in the RPI ? the NIT field generally consists of teams ranked between No. 40-72. If Air Force can get past Fresno ? ranked No. 158 ? their remaining games figure to be against higher-ranked teams like San Diego State and New Mexico and even losses in those games wouldn?t greatly impact their standing.

This is also a chance for Air Force to guarantee at least a .500 record in the league.

There?s a lot riding on it, but Pilipovich will keep that to himself.

?I probably won?t mention that as much,? he said. ?It didn?t go over well last time.?

For everything else, the plan on this road trip will stay the same.

Sophomore Kamryn Williams followed his breakout performance for Air Force by suffering from an illness. He's better now and will figured prominently in the game plan following his 25-point, 10-rebound performance on Tuesday against Wyoming. ...

Assuming he is in the starting lineup, Todd Fletcher will tie Otis Jones (1991-95) for second place on Air Force's all-time games started list at 106. Evan Washington (2007-11) leads with 112. Fletcher could catch him, but it require a postseason berth. Fletcher is also three assists shy of catching Todd Beer (1982-86) for third on the school's all-time assist list. Fletcher has 352 assists.

... This will be Air Force's first trip to Fresno State since the Bulldogs joined the Mountain West conference. Fresno leads the all-time series 9-5.
