I've given this a lot of thought. The umps are going to play a bigger part in this game than any other in this series. Why do I think that? Because if they use the wider strike zone that they used in the first game in SF, Maddux will look like the Maddux of old. If not, he will be very hittable. This game is being hyped as a pitdher's duel and in order for that to happen they have to give that extra 2 inches on the outside of the plate to Maddux. Maddux has made his living going low and outside and is not quite as effective with the narrower strike zone. That;s not saying Prior won't have the same zone to work with but the wide zone will help Maddux more. That being said, I have to go with the same outcome as the first game in SF. Home team and under. Going with

wj, in the play-offs you can forget what the umps tendancies are through-out the season but you can pay some attention to the strike zone a certain crew is using. The Bos/Oak crew is using a very narrow strike zone or has been so far. This favors the hitters. Since they will be doing the NYY series for the next two games it would be reasonable to think they will stay with this strike zone. Now if you take that into account and apply it to pitchers and hitters you can get a little better feel for who might have an advantage in a certain game. Looking at pitchers records might be very mis-leading at this time of year. Example, Prior had a game not long ago where he gave up 8 runs. But it was at Colo where that might happen to anyone and he might have had a ump with a very narrow strike zone. Since then, I don't believe he has given up over 3 runs to anyone. This is a new season and unfortunatly we won't get to see these umpire crews enough to really pick up on what they are doing but believe me they will be consistant as a crew for each series.
