Game 1 American Heritage -25 Cham. - Madonna (40')

*Alrighty then.... The State of Florida gets back to business on the gridiron as no Hurricane is forecasted for this weekend... Schools with artificial turf are the lucky ones as everything is drying out.... Central actually got stuck in Vegas (worst places to be stuck) but the stay was made a little easier with handing Gorman its 2nd loss. So now most of Florida HSF finds themselves back a couple of games compared to the rest of the US... I think we need to account for a little rust (excuse the reference)... 2 Florida heavyweights are going to dance Fri night... Chaminade-Madonna will load up the bus and travel 14 miles to Heritage Stadium...

Everyone recognizes the American Heritage program as one of the Big Boys that is in the same conversation as Booker T Washington, St Thomas Aquinas, Miami Central, etc...... The South Florida school was the only program to run the table going 14-0 and winning the 5A State Championship... Its 4th in 5 years. Patriots are ranked in the Top 10 of the nation, and ranked 3 in the State of Florida. So far, the team has posted Wins over Booker T (42-27) and against Virginia power Bishop Sullivan (14-7), also clobbering Nevada State runner up Liberty (31-0). I wouldn't get too excited about the last W as Gorman beat Liberty in the Nevada Final 80 something to Nada........ The program is a Football Factory that draws some of the best athletes on the name alone..... If a player can't afford to pay the nearly $30,000 a year tuition (the schools private of course) the School will hire a parent to some menial job, as tuition is waived for children of staff....

HC Patrick Surtain took the Head Coaching job a couple of years ago when the Coach that was in the position took a job Coaching Miami U..... Surtain had been the D Coordinator and having a son in the program made it a good match.... He has led the Patriots to its 17th consecutive victory... The team is obviously loaded with Div 1 talent which includes his Son, Patrick Surtain II, a 6'2" 190 lbs, rated #1 CB in the Nation in the Class of 2018, the kid has unbelievable elite speed, cover skills and instinct.... He takes after Pops, who was a successful CB for the Miami Dolphins and spent a few years with Giants and Chiefs in the NFL.... His Son is the 4th overall prospect in the state..... Joining the younger Surtain across the backfield is CB 6'3" 181 lbs Tyson Campbell.... He's a lockdown corner that utilizes his state champion 100 m sprinter speed.... He is recognized as the Nation's 2nd best CB and a 5 star recruit.... Opposing Qbs need to look somewhere else when these two are on the field.... RBs Miles Jones (also plays WR) (Vandy commit) and Jordan Johnson (832 yards w/9 TDs) will split duties behind QB.. The Offensive Line is humongous with players like OG/DT Nesta Silvera at 6'2" 300 lbs, caving open holes (going to Miami.... The list goes on and on for the athletes that make up the Patriot squad.

Chaminade was a State runner up in 3A last year.... The Lions have a dynasty record of 108-52 (45-11 league) so the program is used to winning... HC Dameon Jones took over for the previous HC Jason Milgrow, who resigned over some questionable orders from the administration....Lions are again in position to make a deep run, with several prognosticators having them taking the 3A Ring... In 2016 the offense averaged 28.6 ppg and D held to 15.8 ppg... The 11-5 record ly almost got them there, they have had 5 state final appearances, only winning in 2005 & 2003....Lions opened with a Loss to Central 48-24 (the team that just handed Gorman a Loss) but responded with a defensive masterpiece against Miramar 14-13......a win against Heritage would really boost morale and give confidence..

Lions have their share of Div 1 prospects... actually have 15 players committed to Div 1 schools.... 5 of the players are in the ESPN Top 300...Sr RB Shaun Shivers (all 5'7" 170 lbs of him) is tremendously crafty and in last weeks game he rushed for 163 yards on 23 carries.... And had over 1,500 yards in '16, (He's headed to Auburn) Complimenting Shivers is stand out WR Sr. Xavier Williams, a 4 star recruit (6'0" 183 lbs) called "Zayboogie" and going to Bama, he had 6 catches for 122 yards w/2 Tds..... Joining him will be Eastern Michigan commit, WR Logan Giordano and Kentucky bound WR Marvin Alexander.... The Lions actually match up well in the trenches with TE/DE (6'5" 215 lbs) Jr Cameron Williams and OL anchor, also Kentucky bound D Hawkins.....Sr DE/OLB Zach Dixon 6'2" 200 lbs is undecided.....

*Cham-Madonna is led by QB Dameon Menard (Jr 6' 0" 185 lbs), against Central he was a respectable 10 for 18 for 184 yards w/2 Tds..(going to Temple)... This is where it gets tricky...... Menard was hurt during the Central game with a high ankle sprain (out for 4 to 6 weeks) In the game against Miramar, two Qbs split the time (Sr Quinn Dempsey and Fr Thad Franklin).... Franklin is a dual threat........There is little guessing what the Lion game plan will be......Expect Shivers to carry the load, hopefully controlling the clock and getting into a good old fashioned brouhaha.......Super WR Xavier Williams may be a little hamstrung with the athletic talent that the Patriots will have in the secondary.....There is a chance that Menard is healthy enough to go, as I could find nothing on his condition....Bottom line is Chaminade-Madonna has too much Div 1 talent to be looked past giving them 25 points to boot.... This is a Fort Lauderdale rivalry and should be a hard hitting game.... My only real concern is if Lions get down too much and have to go away from their game plan....... The total opened at 37' and is now 40'......Not a ton of value there but I'm feeling fairly comfortable grabbing the 25 as it's too much value.

Play Chaminade-Madonna +25....2 units (-120)
LOSS

Back with the Valor Game shortly

Game 2

Pomona - 1' Valor Christian (51')

I guess we should call this the Colorado High Super Bowl... Both teams come in at 3-0 and are Ranked #1 & #2 in CO and Ranked #1 & #2 in 5A.... The game has become the preeminent prep football rivalry... This non-league match-up features a rematch of the previous two 5A title games..... Valor won its 4th 5A Championship in 5 years and 7th overall in 8 seasons.....Interestingly, Pomona has to be wondering what they have to do to win the whole enchilada... Panthers beat Valor the past 2 seasons in their non league games.... Valor would then return the favor by beating Pomona when it counted most..... Has to be some frustration on the part of the Panthers...

I have talked about Valor before a couple of weeks ago, so not a ton to add..... Have to say I was very impressed with Valors run last season, as it wasn't looking great in the early going...... Gotta give their HC Rod Sherman credit..., even more so that he never put on a football helmet growing up. It was pointed out to me from one of my southern CA confidantes that he had coached in sunny CA at Orange Lutheran (a Trinity League member).. and was a success there...before he made the move to the Rocky Mtns and contributed to the dynasty.... He and his buddy, Brent Vieselmeyer, both coached before Valor had a true Varsity.. Their first year, they suited 156 FROSH and played JV ball... In their first Varsity year they dressed 7 Frosh and 8 Soph and won 4 games and took their lumps. The cast was set, Valor proceeded to win and having won 4 State Titles, Coach Vieselmeyer left to coach as a D Coordinator at Houston Baptist for 2 years, eventually ended up as a Linebacker Assistant with the Oakland Raiders (whose HC is Jack Del Rio) (Del Rios son Luke was a standout QB at Valor in 2012).....HC Rod Sherman has always had a knack for the Xs and Os... He drifted over to the HC job when his buddy had moved on in 2013...He was 35-7 in 3 seasons with 2 State Titles... Sherman's only loss in State Championship game came in 2014 to Cherry Creek (25-24).....

Valor is led by Sr QB Blake Stenstrom (6'3" 200 lbs) missed the Mullen game with a concussion but played last week, 16 of 21 for 200 yards w/3 Tds...(Dad was Steve Stenstrom played QB for various teams in the NFL from Kansas City to Denver)(Blakes physical features are nearly identical to his Dads when he came out high school to play at Stanford) His backup is Jr Luke McCaffery (6'2" 180 lbs) youngest brother to the McCaffery Clan and a sought after Dual Threat... In 3 games he has only passed for 160 yards on 11 of 17 but has rushed for 194 yards on 32 carries w/4 tds and 1 receiving TD... The offense can plug him into multiple positions and with his versatility, a lot of options.

Pomona Panthers beat State power Mullen 52-22 and served notice that they are back.... Thus far the offense is healthy scoring a combined 138 points.. QB Ryan Marquez (Sr 6'2" 175) has already amassed 679 yards w/5 tds..His dual threat skills make him dangerous offensive weapon... He has a .727 completion rate... As a Jr in 2016, he passed for more than 2,200 yards w/20 Tds...... RB T. Robison (Jr 5'6" 150 lbs) is extremely quick and evasive.. He has averaged 128.3 yards per game and has accumulated 332 yards w/7 Tds... Perhaps the best player on the field is Sr Max Borghi, he has dominated 5A football since he was a FROSH playing on the Varsity.... Last year, he had 1,654 all-purpose yards despite only playing in 11 games due to tearing his ACL and MCL.. His brilliant season came to a grinding halt.... His plans were to attend Washington St, but I believe that's been changed to Colorado, as does Stenstrom on Valor..... Maybe the biggest skill is his ability to take it to the house every time he touches the ball (including special teams like returning kickoffs and punt returns)
The Oline is big and will open holes..... The D is held together by an effective group of LBs... Valor will see a lot of Cover 2......

No doubt, this one should be a hum-dinger if you like HSF...... Valor opened as a small -2' fav but that's been moved to Pomona -1'...... Which makes sense since Pomona has won the non-league match the past 2 years....however, I'm thinking in the back of their minds that they still have nightmares about dropping the 2 games that meant the most in this rivalry.... I lean to the Home team here as I believe the Home field (in Arvada) should account for something which is largely a Pick-em...... *Again I defer to Hawkeye who usually has these games nailed...

My play is Over 51'.......3 units WIN *This could very well be a shootout with the athletes these two schools have...
I capped it at 60 so I'm taking the generous points.. Gl

Game 3

Bothell -3' Mullen (62)

Its a clash of WA vs CO for bragging rights and to keep their team centered and focused as league games are starting to happen..

HC Tom Bainter is in his 18th season...... During that time he has developed a mini dynasty as Bothell has managed a remarkable record winning league from 2006-2014 only missing 2011 along the way... Only 1 state championship though and 2 travels to the runner up slots. Cougars are 2-1, losing its opening to rival Woodinville 36-14. Cougs responded beating Mt Si 35-14 and then another rival Skyline 34-27...Their current state rank is #11.... Thus far they have scored 83 points combined while giving 77. Bothell has averaged 369.7 yards per game (all purpose)

Bothell Offense will only go as far as their Stud QB will take them... QB (Sr Jacob Sirmon (6'4" 218 lbs) is a big strong, prototypical body for the position... He is the Under Armor All-American and the Top Washington Recruit... He has known football his whole life... He was first spotted while attending a Camp at Texas A&M.. His Father played LB in College and his Uncle played Pro for a few years..... As a 7th grader, he passed for 2,135 yards w/35 Tds.. He started as a Frosh and was given a scholarship in his Sophomore year to UW (a team he had followed his whole life)... The idea was to be the replacement for Jake Browning.. He committed in 2015.. Last year, UW signed another QB from Idaho (he won the Gatorade player of the year) the athlete is Colson Yankoff and UW came and explained the situation which has calmed him down... Btw: Yankoff numbers were huge last season, he was 3,129 yards w/27 Tds and rushed for 968 yards w/26 Tds, a Dual Threat...... Sirmon though likes his chances and feels like he can compete for the starting job (he knew Yankoff from a camp they both attended and were housed as roommates).... To Date, Sirmon has 887 passing yards w/7 Tds and 3 ints... His first game against Woodinville was rough as he only had 7 of 28 for 102 yards w/2Tds..... Last week, he was a much improved 25 of 39 for 400 yards and rushed for 40 yards on 8 carries..... RB C Galvin had 20 carries for 35 yards w/1 TD.... WR Da'vicious Wilson is another 4 Star Recruit who caught 8 passes lw for 139 yards... He had 52 catches last year for 623 yards w/6 TDs..... WR Sr Luke Stiles had 8 receptions for 159 yards.....
**The reason I chose stats from their last game was it seems like a better indicator of where this team is headed....Woodinville has a top defense and caught the Cougars with their pants down.... They never recovered... Unfortunately, Sirmon will have to rely on his athleticism as the Oline is very young and inexperienced, which could make for a long night...

Mullen is currently ranked #5 in Colorado despite owning a 2-2 record....however, Mullen HC Tom Thenell should be given credit as the Mustangs were demolished by Pomona to open 52-22 (1st team to put up 50 on Mullen going back to 2014.) followed by a thrashing from Valor.... But something happened and they turned their season around by tipping Regis in a wild 40-39 game... Then spanked Westminister..... Life is good again.... At least for the week........Veteran QB Dominik Depizzol (Jr 6'0" 180 lbs) is back in the groove, which is nice to see because he suffered a left knee injury last year in Week 5 that pretty much defined his season..... The fact that Mullen averages 222.8 yards passing should give you a inkling of what the offense wants to do... Total yards averaged is 330.3 per game... Scoring is starting to climb a little, averaging 27.5 ppg and has held the 4 offenses to a combined 141 points.... Depizzol has an able Receiver in Colorado St bound Ajon Vivens (Sr 6'0" 185 lbs)...... The Defense was supposed to be the strength with Div 1 players peppered throughout.... Oregon Commit, Adrian Jackson, (Sr 6'3" 220 lbs) functions as a rover, in and out of the SS and CB positions to LB (Oregon wants him to move to a LB) another OG/DT is Sr Florian McCann (6'5" 270 lbs) is heading to CO St to be a Ram..... Overall, Mullen has 7 Offensive and 6 Defensive Starters to guide them through the season..

Both Coaches heap praise on each other and their squads... Both feel their respective teams are nearly identical..... It appears both are starting to play with more confidence and I think that will follow suit on the field....

I played the Over 62 for 3 units...LOSS *Shoulda made the total but that's the way the pigskin bounces And I played 2 units on a resurgent Mullen with the +3'...WIN... Love da Hook.gl

Probably should lay off, but..

Utah -3......3 units WIN... Not a great way to make a living laying points on the road, but this is the PAC 12 and it's Arizona, so think Utes D should hold Wildcat Offense in check... Utes only allows 245 ypg and a measly 3.8 ypp... Utes are 14-3 ATS on road against teams with winning record..
