Navy coach weighs in on UCF-Pitt matchup

On Dec. 12, UCF beat Navy by a score of 80-52 at home. Midshipmen coach Don DeVoe got a first-hand look at UCF and liked what he saw. DeVoe, an avid college basketball fan, also watched Pitt on a number of occasions this season in nationally televised games. He took time earlier this week to break down tonight's Pitt-UCF first-round NCAA matchup at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee.

UCF strenghts: Athletic. Aggressive. Sound defensively. "They like to play man-to-man, which obviously would be a tough matchup for them against Pitt. But I do believe they're athletic, and I think they're extremely strong at the wing position with Dexter Lyons and Rob Ross (15 points vs. Navy). They're mobile, athletic and shoot the ball well. They have great perimeter players. On the wing is where they can beat you. They don't have a lot of size, but they're capable of shooting the ball extremely well. They won 25 games, so they did a lot of things right this year."

Weaknesses: Not nearly as physical as Pitt, which features heavyweights Chris Taft (6-11, 250), Chevon Troutman (6-7, 250) and Toree Morris (6-11, 282). Lyons is 6-6, 210, Ross is 6-7, 195, Roberto Morentin is 6-9, 245, and Josh Bodden is 6-9, 235. "Strength will be their shortcoming. Pitt is a Big East team playing against a mid-level Division I team. They've played against kids with more advanced skills on a regular basis. They've played against great players all year, whereas, it's different for Central Florida because it plays in (the Atlantic Sun) Conference. I see this as being a problem area for UCF because they're not used to playing against athletes that are this big and strong."

The guards: Gary Johnson and Lyons man the UCF backcourt, though Lyons is versatile enough to play anywhere. Johnson averages 7.7 points and is second on the team in 3-point attempts (38 for 123) behind Lyons (70 of 154). That duo will have to light it up from long-range to counter the athleticism of the Pitt backcourt of Carl Krauser (15.2 ppg.) and Julius Page (11.2). "Central Florida has to make its outside shots; it's that simple. That's going to be the way to beat Pitt."

Thanks IE great break down you found, that is what I am counting on is strong deff and size saw ucf a few times and know the program very well from coaching down there when they had bo clark as there coach now at flagler, they have always been a team who could score and play ball, they will grow bigger and better each year, lot of people don't know much about ucf but have always been a top d1 baseball school for over 20 years along with fiu and steson in fl, then they picked it up in fb and just keep growing and hoops is only going to follow in the years to come, it is a great school in orlando, and like i said it all started with baseball, and then picked up fb and hoops is on the rise, little knowen fact bo.clark who played there under his dad and coached there when i was there and at flager when i was there led the nation in scoring back when pistol pete was a sr. at what lsu? but useless but little known fact:shrug: But they will be in a good conf in all sports with in the next 5 years, myself i think they end up in the big east with in 3 years they really want in, will see but they are fun to watch.

fletch, what's up buddy? question for you about pitt/ucf game. everywhere i look it seems as if pitt is the highest consensus on the board, does that bother you at all? they should dominate the low post, but ucf does have some athletes to maybe hang around the number and given pitt's ineptness (although better of late) at the free throw, potentially a back door cover.

if pitt plays how they should free throws should not matter it will be a 20+ win if they take this game light it is simple ucf will hang around and make pitt burn more fule then they want in this game, i think by pitt getting a number 3 they ended up with a better draw IMO through-out then they would of at a #2 and they were 1 point away from a 1 unreal go from 1 to 3 but think it worked out good with the draw IMO.

Have a tip but not playing it just passing it along, infact i am buying back pitt for the game not the half, not that i don't like it but this is my full time job and pays the bills, have had a very very good day as well as week, so taking a nice profit away for the day and week , would still have a good profit if pitt covers the game which I think they will but the right thing for me to do is take the money and bank it. This is my paycheck not extra money so I know when to do the right thing most of the time for me and my money management. would I of kept it if the am was not as good yes but the memphis was a good score for me so time to collect and bank for the week, I am done, will post tips as i get them if you want but will not be playing anything else this week and that is a lock.

Tip pitt under 121.5 just passing it on did not play it. I have never really done this everything I post I play unless I tell you like I just did, but could give plays I would play if I was not done for the week. Just want to be honest with you, so if it does not offend anyone by giving out plays I would play but did not since I am done I have no problem in doing that as long as others don't.

Take care and have a great and safe weekend

Plus, I would assume that when you bought your Pitt bet back, you got more points on C Flor because the line has moved in your favor, so you have a chance to hit the middle on it and still win!

Thanks for your posts, Eric. Much appreciated.

Yes got ucf at + 15 , it would be nice to land on 14 or 15, get the money and buy back money back but won't bitch about losing some juice, I never get lucky like that with the number landing on one of those numbers. Could of waited longer but with my luck it might of fell under my number and then i would not of been happy, so i could do it and really not worry when I did it, I would of been happy with the 14 but took the 15. i don't think it will go much higher then 15 but It is in at 15 so i am ok with what ever happens, I can live with it.
