Sundin, Nieuwendyk questionable for Game 5

TSN.ca Staff

4/15/2004

Maple Leafs' forwards Joe Nieuwendyk and Mats Sundin are questionable for Game 5 of Toronto's Eastern Confernece quarterfinal series against the Ottawa Senators Friday night.

Nieuwendyk missed Game 4, a Senators win that evened the best-of-seven series at 2-2, while Sundin left the game in the third period and did not return.

As usual, coach Pat Quinn and the team are not saying much about the injuries.

Nieuwendyk spoke to the media on Thursday and confirmed his chronic back injury had been acting up. He missed a total of 16 games this season due to recurring back spasms. Nieuwendyk said he doesn't think he did anything unusual to trigger the pain this time and hopes to play in Game 5.

Sundin did not talk to reporters Thursday, but was limping slightly. Sundin was wearing a tensor bandage on the upper half of his left leg, confirming Quinn's vague diagnosis of a "lower body injury."

The official word from Quinn is that both players are questionable for Friday. He wouldn't elaborate further on the injuries.

Darcy Tucker also left Wednesday's game with an apparent injury, though it may have been a precaution to avoid further damage to his injured groin. He is expected to be ready for Game 5.

Ottawa has no injuries to report.

very nice record so far in the playoffs, Lafe merchant. ;) this game on Friday should be a great game in Toronto. Very impressed with Ottawa's offensive firepower. Like yourself will try to find out more on injuries, as some key players for Toronto may be out. enjoy the games tonight......

6 players missed practice yesterday, including
domi, tucker, belfour, sundin, niewndyke, and Francis....

tucker, belfour, and francis given the day off, other 3 are hurting...
Quinn says sundin and Niewndyke are game time decision...give me a break PQ, this is a HUGE game for the leafs and both will play, but obviously not 100%...it won't make a difference unless BELFOUR puts on another spectacular show. Ottawa's speed is killing the leafs and that is why they are being outplayed, and the leafs are too hurt to play a physical game, which they should be doing, but given the circumstances its understood. Tough game to call...IMHO best to pass on this one and take the loser from game 5 in game 6. For the life of me, I can't figure out why quinn is playing Reichel over stajan.....

What the leafs really need is a big D like Hatcher from the wings. That would help them out immensely.

Got the Senators at +115 ..Leafs can't skate with the younger faster sens, and for the first time in the series Lalime outplayed Belfour last game... barring another Eddie miracle,Sens should win IMO ..

Dr............get Antropov off the ice.......:nono:

as for tonights game......TONS of injuries, but remember what the Leafs did a couple years ago.....half their team was hurt, and they still made the final 4

Leafs will win tonight........they'll get the mojo back, Eddy will bounce back.............the home crowd will pull em through and the pressure will be back on Ottawa..........remember, if the Sens lose, the fans will be saying...."how could ya lose to the Leafs with all those injuries"
