A three-course meal on the menu for tonight:

The appetizer:

NEW YORK +5.5 vs. SEATTLE
Everyone reading this is going to think I've completely gone bonkers, but I love this game! Perfect contrarian betting situation. Knicks are about as popular right now with NBA bettors as Ariel Sharon on the West Bank. No one wants to touch this team with Monopoy mney. They looked like mutts on national TV last night and everyone who follows the game is going to shy away from this team, which is going to give the Knicks some extra value here on the line tonight. Think of it this way: Knicks DID play a pretty Goddamn good game for three full quarters last night (how many of you thought they would upset the Heat when they were up by 7 at the start of the 4th quarter...go ahead, raise your hands, there's no shame). That's right, Knicks know very well they blew it. Now, the come home for a Friday night home game playing in front of a disgruntled crowd. I look for them to play tough in front of the home crowd tonight. They also play against the perfect opponent -- ripe for an upset. The Sonics are a mellon that's been sitting in the sun too long, just ready to bust. Seattle has been on fire, but has been on the road for a week (boredom, hotel rooms, ho's). Sonics may come in flat and overconfident and will be facing an angry Knicks team with something to prove. Sure, this team is going nowhere, but pro athletes coming off embarrassments usually perform well in the next game playing with extra motivation. I see Seattle coming in and going through the motions here versus a Knicks team that wil be fired up and ready to avenge a humiliating loss last night. Add the fact we get +5.5 points with a Friday night home team and that's too good a bargain to pass up. I REALLY love this because it's quintessential contrarian handicapping at its finest. We don't win all of these (and the Knicks could lose, of course), but we are going against public perceptions and getting a lot of line value -- with the home team! Start up that thread now for all the Seattle bettors who are going to be kicking in their TV screens. Bad beat stories to follow....

The Main Course:

NEW YORK (+190 MONEYLINE) vs. SEATTLE
The Knicks were a juicy appetizer, and so I'm going to gobble down a double dose of them for my main course. I don't play many moneylines, but this is too good a value to pass up. Knicks at home +190? Give it to me and pass the gravy. Seattle has played a bunch of creampuffs lately -- Cleveland, Atlanta twice, and the Carterless Raptors. They're 4-0. Big shit. There's no way this team should be a 2-1 road favorite, except maybe Chivago when they were playing bad.
There is also a strong trend that suggests going with any team that lost its last game and now plays the next game at home versus a rested opponent. Knicks are 4-1 in that role this season. My mouth is wattering already.

For Dessert:

MINNESOTA -4 vs. SAN ANTONIO
Spurs get a tough spot here, coming off a tough overtime loss in Cleveland last night (oh, the shame of that!) and now must play at one of the NBA's best home teams. Wolves are 17-10 ATS at home this season, including 4-0 in the final game of a homestand when they must go out on the road for 3+ road games. Lakers got a dose of the Wolves two nights ago, and now its the Spurs turn to take a beating. Wolves absolutely hammered the Spurs at Alamodome last week -- a staggering 24-point win. Never mind "revenge" for the Spurs (Tim Duncan, my ass!), they couldn't beat an undermanned Cavs team last night. Minnesota is 6-1 this season when playing rested versus an unrested team. This is a very generous line with lots of sugar, so I'm taking a big slice.

Apperatives will be served at halftime tonight. Check back at the FREE THROWS Forum for ala carte dishes.

Bon Apetit!

Hey Nolan, nice write up on the Knicks. I agree with you.

What do you think of the idea of leaving it till nearer game time? Do you think the line will get better for us?

Leggy:

What, you mean the line didn't drop 2 or 3 points immediately after I put up that write-up? I must be losing my touch. Maybe I should have left out the Ariel Sharon reference. :)

Honestly, I'm not sure how the line will move on this. I suspect the line at 5.5 has reached a point of resistance, where the only way it can now move is back to 5 or perhaps 4.5 Steam could come in and move it up to 6, but that would be dumb money in my view. No wise bettor would lay 6 in a road game versus a motivated home team...it's either a pass or a play on the home dog IMHO.

I do think the moneyline price may drop. It certainly won't move to 195 or 200. I suggest a moneyline play now, since it could drop to 180 or even 175.

Barring any late news (Spreewell out with injury or something unforeseen) I suggest the play early.

great write-up Nolan -- good info, plus some humor -- I especially like the theory that Seattle may be distracted because of banging hos on the road (a legitimate theory, I might add).

good stuff -- thanks.

Notjing personal but I guess some people do need a house to fall on them. Look for yourself at all the paople that have posted the Knicks on here expecting them to win you guys are never going to learn! I said last week against NJ and was berated for it and I will say it again you sure aren't using an ounce of handicapping skills if you are picking the Knicks they have packed it in and there is no value betting on them, just last night there were people taking the KNicks good god how much money has to be lost betting on this team for some people to learn. Nothing personal Nolan as I believe you to be a solid capper and this is the NBA and anything can happen but I would sure rather have my money on the team that is rested against a team that is not very good in back to backs and have packed it in for the year they have proven it over and over again this year and you people won't learn oh well I'll take Seattle. And where do you get they are motivated they have given up more big leads in the second half than I care to count sheeessshhhhh! They are quitters!

I have to disagree!

I have to disagree!

As far as I understand Nolan, your pick is based on the belief that NY will rebound after humiliating loss!

In my opinion they have had the biggest share of humiliating losses followed by even more humiliating losses, and they wasted many double digit leads without blinking, this team has no spirit, they just quit!

Maybe Seattle is in tough spot, maybe NY covers, but I have no reason to believe they'll get emotional and wish for a win in this particular game!

Gentlemen. Gentlemen. Gentlemen.

Okay...take deep breaths. Think soft white bunny rabbits. Ocean waves. Warm sunshine. Count to ten slowly.....

Have the Knicks been a pig the last month or so? You bet! Have the Knicks shown they have no heart? You bet! Have the Knicks shown they can't beat a Division II team? You bet! THIS TEAM STINKS! Even worse, I despise this team and have hated these over-rated screwballs for two decades!

But, let me ask YOU a question (with all due respect).

Seattle vs. New York
WHICH TEAM do you think THE SQUARES will be betting on tonight?

You know, the guy standing there at the Vegas sportsbook with a linesheet in one hand, and the crack of his ass showing. Looking up at the board and "capping" the games simply by glancing at the board. The guy with one striped sock and a dark blue sock and a pair of tattered polyester shorts. Who's that guy gonna be betting on tonight? You wanna be on the same side as THAT guy?

Hmmmmm, where have we seen this situation before? (ANSWER: Two nights ago in Charlotte, when the lame duck Hornets were 0-9 at home versus winning teams at home and absolultely MAULED the New Jersey Nets).

Could I be wrong here? Sure. Been wrong more times than I care to admit.

But, just because a team looks like shit one night doesn't mean they won't bloom into a beautiful rose the next. Remember, it take fertilizer to grow a garden.

PS -- I kind like that about the garden...has a nice ring to it., doesn't it?

I wouldn't put it past the Knicks to come back tonight and beat Seattle by 10. The Knicks are the biggest bunch of flakes...and I'm not talking corn flakes here either...in the NBA. They have no heart, no talent aside from Houston and Spree, and flat out suck. That's probably the only reason why they are a decent play tonight. Everyone and their aunt tilly is going to be on Seattle tonight, just as Nolan pointed out. Would I touch this game? Absolutely not...but watch the phuckin' Knicks win easily.

OK, so we agree!

OK, so we agree!

I also think -5,5 is too much for Seattle! :)

BTW, I want to be on the winning side, regardless of the polyester-shorts guy! :D

And I was even on Charlotte that night!

Well I had Charlotte in that game and I have posted my share of money line dogs on here most recently the Patriots and Maryland when they beat Duke posted on Madjacks, when the Lakers played in NY over the weekend some of the Laker players commented on how the Garden is not the same place it used to be the fans are not behind them right now and they have no confidence at all I think when you look at dogs you ahve to pick one that is no 8-21 ATS at home and keeps getting their butts kicked over and over they have shown not one stitch of intestinal fortitude they have shown no pride they keep blowing leads and I personally could care less who the squares are on I cap the game and bet it on my own handicapping not by what a bunch of squares are doing you take the Knicks good luck to you and if they win won't be any skin off my back because I bet the same amount on every game and I have already made enough betting against the knicks that they won't get into my pocket but I really think you are way off in your thinking but that is my opinion.

But Robert.

You sound as though you think the Knicks should be opposed in every match. You know, I am sure, that backing or opposing any team in every match is the quick way to the poor-house.

Knicks have produced enough fertilizer to grow a sequioa. How about a first half play instead?

Knicks 8-21 ATS at home how can I be in the poor house? I haven't bet every game but bet allot of them I could be wrong I have been before but I will tell you this for every reason, stat or trend that you can post to support a play on the knicks I can put up 2 to bet the Sonics. This team has not looked bad one night then looked good the next they have looked bad every night good god 8-21 ATS Sonics 20-10 ATS on the road and with a win over the Lakers in LA and a win agains t the best home team in the NBA the Kings and they didn't just bea t them they destroyed them!

Some things to consider

Some things to consider

Good Bet Nolan
Some things to consider:
This spread came out at -1.5 Seattle (according to wagerline line moves) The squares with plummer ass obviously got an early start on this one
I haven't been tracking this very long but NBA line movement of over two points on no real news seems to be a real winner
Case in point NY Washington a few nights ago spread opened up at 5.5 and got driven to 8.5 at SI and Wash lost by four (the 5.5 was out well after the News broke Jordan would not be playing)
When you quote NY as 8-21 at home against the spread you need to realize that this includes many spreads with NY favored by over 4-5 points at beginning of season. They are 3-2 as home dogs ATS.
Good contrarian play--I like it alot
Good luck to all of you
Adam

I follow the lines from open to close and the line move on the Wash game was because of Jordan being out this line moved as soon as it hit the books and not many squares bet a game the night before soon as the game is posted. Seattle is 6-1 ATS as a road fav. Contrarians unite but I think you will be crying in your towels when the night is out if I am wrong I will be one of the first ones to post that Nolan was right on. Good Luck in whatever you play! And this line was not posted to the public at -1.5 it got to the books at 1.5 and the wiseguys pushed it to 3.5 when it was posted to the public no one follows the lines closer than I do I guarantee that and it has been my experience when teh books get a line at 1.5 and post it to the public at 3.5 the Sharps are on Seattle bud! I got it last night at 3.5!

Before things get carried away, let's remember -- this is just ONE GAME. Robert could be right. Or, the contrarians could be right. In fact, it's all percentages.

Frankly, this is what the forum is ALL ABOUT!

Agree?

Too bad we don't have the time and all to do this with every game.
